The usual pastries and hot drinks were laid out for the students as they entered, and as soon as everyone was seated, Aziraphale indicated a stack of blue books and an assortment of fortune-telling accoutrements.

"Your final exam is in two parts, one written and one practical. I don't expect that the test will take the entire period, so if you finish early, you are welcome to stay and talk quietly." He gestured toward the blackboard, where there were instructions and a list of questions for the exam.

Aziraphale looked around at all of his students, a sad smile on his face. "I want all of you to know that I've enjoyed teaching you, and learning from you. I wish you all much success in wherever the Plan takes you, and I hope that perhaps one day, our paths will cross again."

"We're nearly to the end of our term, so today we'll review for your final exam. You have a couple of choices for how you spend your class period today. You may work on your own or with your classmates, reviewing the handouts I've provided and your own notes or practicing the prophecy methods we've done in class. Your final will include a practical application element, so I suggest that you make certain you feel relatively proficient in at least two of the hands-on methods we've covered. I am available, of course, for any questions you might have."

The classroom today was decorated with all kinds of astrological charts, and anyone looking closely at the ceiling might have noticed the faint outlines of constellations. The furniture had been moved into a large circle, and there were piles of cushions on the floor.

"Today's topic is astrology, or specifically the branch of astrological divination known as astromancy. There are a number of different 'traditions' of astrology -- those of you from this dimension might be most familiar with the Western or Chinese traditions." Aziraphale gave a brief lecture, and then waved his hand toward the ceiling. The lights in the room began to dim, and as they did so, the ceiling became covered in stars, constellations, and the outlines of astrological symbols.

"Make yourselves comfortable in the chairs on the floor, and spend some time studying the symbols used in the three major fields of astrology we've covered in the lecture: Vedic, Western, and Chinese. If you like, try your hand at some divination for yourself or one of your classmates."

The usual arrangement of breakfast food and hot drinks was laid out, and as soon as all were present, Aziraphale began his lecture.

"Today's topic is on the ethics of prophecy. Specifically, the difference between 'knowing' and 'telling'. Some people believe that a seer is obligated to share his or her information, especially with the subject of a prophecy, or when the outcome of the prophecy is negative. Others feel that knowledge of the future is like any other kind of knowledge, and is the property of the seer to do with as he or she desires.

"What I want all of you to discuss is this: Are seers obligated to inform the subjects of their prophecies? Are they ethically responsible for the outcome of a subject's actions, once informed? Or, are they ethically responsible for the outcome if a subject is not informed?"

Once the discussion was finished, Aziraphale handed around a set of runes to each student, along with a handout on rune casting. "Your hands-on activity today is to practice rune casting, either for yourself or for a partner."

After reluctantly seeing Lana off to her 1st period class, Chris had gotten a message from Aziraphale, asking him to cover class today. He quickly showered, printed out the lesson information from his email and orbed to J,GOB so he could provide some coffee and pastries.

As such, when the students arrived, they would find Chris sitting on the desk in the front of the room and a selection of goodies on a side table.

"Morning," Chris said, once everyone had arrived and taken their seats. He was frowning a little when he realized that there were a few people missing that he had expected to see. "Aziraphale couldn't make it today, but he sent me his lesson plans."

"He also wanted me to remind you all about the special project next week. Next Tuesday during second period, we will be meeting at the Perk for an extra credit project. Throughout second period, you will be giving free fortune readings to anyone who comes by and asks for one. This is not a required activity. Extra credit will be applied to participants, but the attendance requirement will be waved for that day. You can probably email or call him with any questions about it.

There's also a discussion topic. Can games of chance be a form of prophecy? If you flip a coin or draw lots, are the results pre-determined? What kinds of signs and omens do you incorporate into your daily beliefs? Break up into small groups to discuss."

He looked around anxiously after he finished the lecture and was very disturbed to realize that Lana hadn't made it to class.

The classroom today was decorated with posters and charts referring back to all of the hands-on prophecy activities the class had undertaken so far. Once every was settled in, Aziraphale stood to address the class.

"Today, rather than a written quiz, you're going to have a practical exam. There will be two parts: a reading for yourself, and a reading for one other classmate. A person can receive more than one reading if necessary. The only stipulation is that you choose one of the assigned methods for each reading."

Part One: Do a reading for yourself, using cartomancy, tea reading, or I Ching.

Part Two: Do a reading for a classmate, using chieromancy, chrystallomancy, or cartomancy.

"When you are finished, you may use the rest of the class time to read or talk quietly.

"Today's class discussion is on the topic of scam artists and prediction. I'd like to hear your opinions on some of the following questions:

-Does charging money for telling fortunes affect the validity of a prediction?
-Do fortune-teller con artists harm the reputation of "real" seers?
-How can legitimate prophets and seers counteract the public perception of fortune-tellers as cons?"

Once the discussion was over, Aziraphale gave a brief lecture and presented some handouts on tea (and coffee) reading.

"Your in-class activity today is to read tea leaves or coffee grounds for yourself or -- preferably -- for a classmate. You may also want to get in some practice outside of class, as we will be using today's activity as the basis for a special project in a few weeks."

It wouldn't have been Aziraphale's class if there were no breakfast pastries and pots of tea and coffee on the table in the center of the room. Since it was Aziraphale's class, those items were conveniently available for the students to enjoy.

The teacher himself had just finished setting up a display of scrying implements, and turned to the class once everyone was seated.

"As you can see, today's exercise will be in chrystallomancy, or crystal gazing. Before we begin the exercise, however, I want to give you a brief lecture on dream interpretation. You may think it odd that the lecture would focus on dreams while the exercise covers scrying, but really the two are very similar. The same sorts of symbolism you're going to encounter in your dreams is also very often present in chrystallomancy as well."

Aziraphale proceeded to give his lecture on dream interpretation, and gave each student several different handouts and a blank journal.

"Your homework for is to keep a dream journal for the next week. One of your handouts has some good pointers on methods for keeping them. When you come to the next class, I'd like you to bring a written interpretation of one of the dreams from your journal. Now, we'll move on to today's class exercise."

He gave a short talk on the basics of chrystallomancy, and then said, "Now, pair up and choose a crystal or scrying mirror to work with, and do a reading for your partner. Also, please don't forget to turn in your homework assignment from last week."

The usual offerings of delicious breakfast treats, along with tea and coffee, were in place on the table in the center of the room. Aziraphale was kicked back in his chair, reading a novel.

No really, he was. It had a picture of a woman in a froofy old-fashioned dress on the cover, too. He stuck it under his chair once the class began to assemble, however.

"Good morning! Today's discussion will focus on the perceptions of prophets and fortune-tellers in popular culture. I'm sure all of you, whether you've had personal experience with prophecy or not, came to this class with a specific idea in mind of what constitutes the sort of person who makes predictions. Perhaps it was that of a traditional witch, or a gypsy reading tea leaves, or even the man who tells you what tomorrow's weather will be. Your experiences, and the society you're raised in, are going to color your ideas about people who predict the future. As well as the level of acceptance you're likely to feel toward what those people tell you.

"So your discussion topic today is this: In your own view, does the methodology a person uses affect the "validity" of his or her predictions? For example, is a prediction from a professional tarot reader more, less or as valid as a prediction from a religious seer? Please keep in mind that there are no right or wrong answers, but I would like to hear what each of you has to say on the subject, and I'd like to hear your reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with your fellow students."

Once the discussion was over, Aziraphale indicated a large palmistry chart on the wall. "Today you'll be doing your first real hands-on exercise, if you'll excuse the pun. Chieromancy, or the practice of telling a person's future through the shape and coloring of their hands and the arrangement of lines on their palms, is perhaps one of the best-known methods of fortune-telling." He passed around some handouts, and gave a brief lecture on chieromancy.

"Now, I'd like you to choose up partners. For the remainder of class, I want you to practice reading one another's palms. Before you leave today, please remember to turn in your homework from last week. We'll be having a test next week, so your assignment is to study what we've discussed thus far."

Extra care seems to have been put into the spread of breakfast offerings this morning -- muffins, bagels, coffeecake, spice bread, and scones. As well as plenty of hot beverages, and several types of juice. Aziraphale appears to be in a particularly mellow mood, although he frowns now and again when the thought crosses his mind that this is the very last meeting for this class.

"First off, I want to tell all of you how very much I've enjoyed teaching you, and just getting to know you. I'm going to miss this class terribly, and I do hope that even if you don't enroll in my class next term, you'll still stop by for a visit now and again.

Today, in place of a lecture, we're going to have an open discussion. I want to hear your views on what we've covered in class this term, and I also want to hear any questions that might have gone unanswered. There'll be a drop box for your final group projects to be turned in outside my office door, and it will remain there until Friday afternoon.

Truly, this has been a remarkable experience for me, and although I do expect to be seeing some of you for our final lab session on Friday, I want to thank all of you for making my very first teaching experience a wonderful and memorable one."

When everone was settled, Wilson stood up and began to pace the room.

"Good morning. First off I wanted to congradulate you all on a brilliant pagent. Mr. Connor, excellent work I am sure that Aziraphale will be delighted when he sees the video I took."

Wilson had carefully dethawed and in some instances reheated the baked goodies that Phale had made and left for his Prophecy class. Schleping them up to the school, the young doctor headed into the class room and supressed a sigh at the homey configuration that reminded him of it's missing professor.

Setting up the baked nummies along with a group of hot beverages ranging from cider to cocoa, Wilson got himself some hot cider and a few gingersnap cookies and then settled down in an armchair to wait for the students to arrive.

When everyone was settled and in their seats, Wilson stood up, carefully took roll then set his cider aside for a moment.

"Good morning. As I'm sure you are all aware, Professor Aziraphale has had to leave us for a bit and I am helping his TAs cover his classes. Aziraphale left behind handouts for today's lab exercises and if you have any questions about the material, please speak with Miss Halliwell or Miss Belacqua. More fresh-baked goodies today. Gingerbread cake, apple spice bread, several varieties of scones and muffins. And of course the required hot beverages. The classroom rather smells like a coffee shop.

Aziraphale seems a great deal less fidgety than on Monday. In fact, he looks downright pleasantly distracted, and is humming to himself whenever he isn't lecturing. Probably you don't really want to know the reason for this, though.

LECTURE: "Today we're going to study my personal favorite type of divination: tea reading. Although you heretics in the class may use coffee grounds if you like. On the table you'll all find several handouts on reading tea leaves. It's somewhat like dream analysis in that there are particular meanings associated with the shapes or symbols you'll find in the leaves.

LECTURE: "Today we'll discuss the public perception of prophecy and seers. Throughout history, those gifted -- or cursed, depending on how you see it -- with the ability to foretell the future have been generally viewed in one of three ways: as a true and benevolent prophet, as a practitioner of dark sorcery, or as a con artist. Sometimes that perception was based on societal beliefs, sometimes on religion, sometimes on one's personal belief or disbelief in mysticism.

In addition to the usual comfy chairs and breakfast spread, there are several stacks of books scattered about the room.

"Good morning. Today we're going to do something a little different. I know that lately, you've had to deal with some rather difficult topics in this class. Prophecy isn't an easy subject, and that's especially true for those of you who've already had first-hand experience with it. So today, I want you to take some time to decompress. Work with your project group if you like, catch up on some reading-" He nodded toward the books. "Or just talk quietly with your friends. I'll be here all period for anything that you'd like to discuss with me, any questions you might have about the class, or anything else. There are handouts for you that cover the class topics for today. Those of you enrolled in the lab will find some of this material familiar, but there's more in-depth information here for you.

Also, I'll need to speak with Miss Belacqua, Miss Brown, and Miss Nitt before the end of class today."
Psst, this way )

Absences:
Lyra Belacqua: one class, one lab excused
Lavendar Brown: one class excused
Agnes Nitt: one lab

[ooc: Apologies for wimping out on today's class. I promise there'll be twice as much effort put into next week's. And yes, we're a little off the syllabus. I'll be updating it soon. Please wait for OCD threads are up.]

Today the room is arranged with pairs of comfortable chairs facing one another, a small table set between each pair. Each table is equipped with a very typical looking crystal ball and a dark flat mirror.

[ooc: I may be SP today, if your lab partner doesn't show up, see if someone else will partner you -- Phoebe or Lyra, if you're around, this would be part of your TA duties. Also, be warned: I will be issuing detentions next week to anyone who doesn't tag into the main class or this lab by next Monday, or who missed last week's classes and hasn't provided me with an IC excuse. (Phoebe is exempted from that last one.) ;) Please wait for OCD is up!]

[ETA ooc: I lose at dates. Your prophecy teacher should know it's Friday the 13th. Apparently he doesn't care.]

Since it would be the first sign of the apocalypse if there wasn't a table laden with breakfast pastries and tea...there is indeed a table laden with breakfast pastries and tea. There is also a pile of review handouts for the students to pick up on their way in.

"Good morning everyone. I hope you all had an enjoyable time at the Homecoming festivities. Before we begin, I'd like to remind Miss Halliwell to please turn in your take-home test from the Lab." He smiled at Phoebe.

"Today we're going to have a review of the material we've covered in the first five weeks of class, followed by a test on that material. Your handouts should help you in reviewing, and this is the time to ask any questions you might have."

Let's start at the very beginning... )

The room is arranged in a combined of big, extremely comfortable looking armchairs and piles of large, also comfortable looking cushions and pillows. The lights are dimmer than usual, there is the faintest hint of a scent, as if of fresh spring air, and very soft music is playing.

[ooc: As the professor says, this is an entirely voluntary lab exercise. If your character is absolutely dead set against trying it, just let him know. Anyone not participating might be asked to help monitor the others. If you do dream, and you want something to happen, please ping me in the OOC thread so I know to keep watch on your character specifically. Please wait for OCD threads are up. Have at!]

Scones and cookies, tea and coffee, are set out on the table. Each student is given a packet of handouts as they enter.

"First, a bit of business. It would seem I am in need of a new TA to assist Miss Halliwell. If anyone thinks they might be interested, please see me after class. Now, today's lecture is on dream interpretation, which is probably one of the most common forms of divination. Everyone dreams, although not everyone dreams prophetically. However, for years psychologists and philosophers have looked to the symbols found in dreams to understand both the mortal mind and to look for insight into the future."

[ooc #2: And now, in the correct location. *headdesks*]

Friday, September 29, Second Period

Once again the furniture has been rearranged. There are large comfortable pillows and cushions on the floor, and between each set of two is a low table with two decks of cards sitting on it. One deck is an ordinary set of playing cards, the other is a classical tarot deck. There are also two sets of handouts on each table. As usual, a table of tea and coffee, scones, cookies, and tea sandwiches has been provided.

"Today's exercise is on Cartomancy, or the skill of divining through cards. Cartomancy can be done using ordinary playing cards, although many people choose to use the more ornate and specialized tarot cards. You have a choice to use either one today. Once you've gotten comfortable, I want you to follow the guidelines on your handouts and do a simple reading for your lab partner. You can choose any layout you like, although you must use a minimum of three cards. If you're not certain what to choose, consider using the Celtic Cross, which is a very common layout for general readings."

HOMEWORK: One of the handouts is actually a take-home test. Please complete the test and bring with you to lab next Friday.

The furniture is back in place, and the table is piled with sweet and savory scones, several types of cookies, and fresh-baked spice bread. Aziraphale calls the class to order as soon as everyone is settled in.

"First, I have a short quiz for all of you on the material we've covered so far. And then we'll move immediately into the lecture, as there's a great deal of material to cover. Today we'll be discussing the major principles of interpreting prophecy."

Friday, September 21, Second Period

Instead of the usual lounge-like arrangement, today the classroom has been set up without any furniture at all. On the floor are numerous large and comfortable looking cushions. Hanging on one wall is an oversized palmistry diagram.

"Good morning, class. Before we begin our lab, I do want to remind you all that your project proposals for this lab section are due by the end of the day today. There is a drop box outside my office door for that purpose. Also, your group project proposals for the regular class are due today as well.

On to the lab... )

It should be a given by now that the table is laden with cookies, scones and tea (or coffee, for you heathens). And also that Aziraphale is sitting in what could be considered the 'professor's chair', having a cup of tea himself. Once the class is seated, he sets his teacup down and begins speaking.

More sandwiches and cookies (some of them might be rum-ginger today), as well as tea and coffee. Aziraphale seems a little subdued today, but he smiles readily enough as the students enter.

"Good morning everyone. Today I like for you to do two things: first, I want each person in turn to share the information you gathered last week about your lab partner. If you didn't find a lab partner...then raise your hand and I will pair you up myself. Second, I'd like for you to each tell me about one form of divination that particularly interests you, and why. There will be no lecture today, but I am always willing to answer your questions. Next week, we'll begin our actual hands-on lab work."

Work on your project proposals, which are due next week.

Monday, September 11, Period 1

This morning the table is set with scones, tea and coffee, just as it was last week. Once the class is settled in, Aziraphale begins to speak.

“Today’s discussion is on the major historical figures associated with prophecy. As I am only familiar with Earth history of my own world, I apologize if I leave out someone you feel ought to be on the list. You are welcome, however, to add to the discussion and introduce the class to anyone you feel has been overlooked. And also, do keep in mind that this is only a listing of the most notable figures. A discussion of everyone throughout history who has been considered a seer of some sort would take far longer than a single class period. Please also keep in mind that I am not attempting to put any sort of seal of approval on these people. Whether or not they were ‘true’ prophets is not the point of this discussion.”
Follow me to the rest of the lesson )

Before the class departed, Aziraphale informed them that he had two announcements to make. "First..." He looked a bit disappointed. "I will need some form of written excuse from Mr Constantine, in order to excuse his absence last week. Second, and this is much better news: we will be embarking on a field trip with another class in November, to Las Vegas. You'll be receiving permission slips to be signed within the next couple of weeks."

The prophecy classroom looks much the way it did on Monday, with the comfy chairs and lounge-like atmosphere. The tea table today is filled with small crust-less sandwiches, and of course more cookies. And tea, obviously.

Figuring it would be best to get his first day of classes off to a good start by being available to his students, Aziraphale is in his office. Which looks a lot like a very small library, actually. But there's a comfy-looking couch against the one wall that doesn't have bookcases, and also a couple of comfy-looking chairs near the one occupied by the professor. There's no desk, but there is a table nearby, which holds Aziraphale's tea.

What, you expected an actual office-looking office?

Monday, September 4, period 1

As the students enter the classroom, they'll discover two things immediately. First is that there are no traditional desks and chairs. Instead, the room has been arranged like a lounge, with comfortable armchairs and couches, with tables nearby for setting books and such. Second is a long table in the center of the arrangement of seating, filled with food -- teapots that pour whatever the drinker's favorite flavor might be (they even pour coffee if that's the drinker's preference), platters of various types of sweet and savory scones, and a large plate of warm homemade gingersnap cookies. The professor, dressed in neat dark-colored suit (because Wilson told him it made him look more teacher-like), is seated in one of the armchairs and is attempting not to fuss and dither.
