The class met on the Causeway, where the portal to the promised amusement park awaited them.

"A few rules before you run off," Ghanima said cheerfully. "No getting arrested, be back at the portal in four hours, and try not to get caught stealing candy from babies."

Note how the instruction was specifically not to get caught doing it. "And whatever you do, please don't burn the place down," Tahiri added, and if she looked a little bit uncomfortable it was because she had shoes on. "And have fun, of course. If any of you have trouble with large crowds, let us know, and we'll make sure you get somewhere quieter."

And that was about all that needed to be said. The rest was up to the class.

"Next week is your final," Ghanima said once everyone had gathered in the Danger Shop. "We will be taking you off-campus to an amusement park as a reward for having survived the semester. Your mission will be to enjoy the day without getting arrested, starting a riot, or otherwise calling undue attention to yourselves."

"Which, if I know Fandom students, can actually be a pretty big challenge," Tahiri said wryly. "And believe it or not, I really do mean that as a compliment."

"Starting a riot is actually quite an admirable skill," Ghanima agreed cheerfully, "--but that's a different class I teach, and not this one. Part of survival is learning the ability to blend in, and thriving would be enjoying yourself on an afternoon free of finals."

"Take today to practice anything you want to go over before next week. How money works, what an amusement park is, appropriate clothing, foods available... do as you like, and we'll see you next week."

"And for those of you who went on the fall break trip, it's not that kind of amusement park," Tahiri added. "Sorry to disappoint, but no dinosaurs this time, so you'll have to figure out other ways to have fun."

"It know it's only the fall semester, and it isn't even over yet, but there's no harm in being prepared," Tahiri began. "For explaining Fandom to people from home, that is. It may not be a issue for you, but sometimes, it's funny how 'I went to school on an island in a completely different world, hundreds of years in the past' -- or future, or, well, you get the idea, but the point is that's not always easy to explain. Or maybe even something you should explain."

"Even if you don't mention Fandom's more colorful elements, you're still left with questions to answer at times," Ghanima agreed. "Such as 'where did you learn to pick locks,' or 'who taught you how to use a sword?' or 'why did some little kid claiming to be you call me last weekend?.' Even if you have a good alibi for your teenage years, how do you explain away typically non-traditional skills?"

"Or what that little glowing device you carry around is, the one you say you're playing games on." Tahiri nodded. "Fandom can follow people home, too, that's the thing. You might fall asleep in your own bed back home and wake up as someone else the next morning -- don't worry, that generally wears off in a day or two just like it does here. And unfortunately, not everyone is going to take 'I spent a few years in a really weird place' as a good enough explanation."

"So today, you're going to come up with ways of explaining away the bits and pieces of your life that you can't share with someone," Ghanima informed them. "For instance, I excuse my absences at court by saying I'm on a scholastic retreat, which is easily believable to the members of the Great Houses. I've long been thought of as the more historically-inclined of the Atreides Twins, even before we took the throne, and I take advantage of that. It even has the benefit of being a shade of the truth, so if I went up against another Truthsayer, they could not say I was lying."

Tahiri spoke up, "Me, on the other hand, I tend to take advantage of being part of a group that's known to travel all over the galaxy on missions --" including that particularly memorable one with future-you, Mara -- "all the time, maybe for a few days, maybe years. A lot of the time I can get away with just saying I got called away on Jedi business. That's usually good enough for people, and that's probably one of your best bets: coming up with a way to explain things that leaves as little opportunity as possible for people to ask you questions and poke holes in your story."

She paused. "Unless you're good enough at lying that you can come up with an elaborate cover story that's really solid, and I'm not putting that past you."

"Keep as close to the truth as you can, even if you're very good at lying," Ghanima advised dryly. "It keeps things clear. Tell a truth if you can't do the truth."

"Now get in duos or groups and work on your cover stories. Everything from where you went to school, to some item you now own that's not common where you are from."

When students arrived at the Danger Shop this week, they'd find that their teachers had segmented it into different zones.

"Stress," Ghanima said briskly, once it appeared everyone who was coming had arrived. "I am quite sorry to say that you will continue to experience stressful situations once you graduate from Fandom. High School does not have a monopoly on trauma."

"Unfortunately." Tahiri looked apologetic, as if she'd somehow failed to keep trauma from spilling over into life after high school. "It isn't something that goes away, really. Which means . . . you'll have to figure out how to manage it so it doesn't get in the way of dealing with the rest of your life."

Because Jedi were so good at it.

They really were. Ghanima didn't have any philosophical disagreements with the Jedi Code and how they dealt with emotions and trauma. At all. Really. *ahem*

"There are a number of effective coping strategies for stress," Ghanima continued smoothly. "We will be focusing on the ones that are emotionally and physically healthy and productive."

Sorry, kids, no fake booze in the Danger Shop today.

"My personal favorite is sparring," she said, gesturing towards the segment of the Shop set up with training dummies, mats, and other gym equipment. "Physical activity is an excellent method of getting out of your own head, so long as you are following basic safety protocols during your match or while using equipment. Recklessness will only cause more emotional issues in the end, when you inevitably end up causing damage; to property or people."

"That's a good one, and it usually helps to be working with someone you know and trust," Tahiri agreed. "Someone who can help you if you do get too much into your own head during a spar. But on the other hand, opposite of exercising, there's always food. Comfort eating, if that's more your thing. Like ice cream. That's a classic." There was a touch of an affectionate grin on her face.

"Cat videos," Ghanima offered. "Or real pets, if you know one. Animal therapy is a medically-confirmed method of improving your social, emotional, or cognitive functioning. For those who are allergic or cannot have an animal, I hear there is a lovely app for the phones that is full of kittens that play with toys."

"And occasionally do some eating therapy of their own." Not that Tahiri had gotten a little bit hooked on Neko Atsume. Nooooooope. "There's also reading, or going for a long walk, or -- there are a lot of ways to deal with stress, is the point, and it's a good idea to find the ones that work for you, because you're going to need them at some point, if not while you're here. Getting adjusted to going home after Fandom, for one, can be pretty stressful." Even if you didn't end up spending all your time trying to get people from vastly different cultures to learn to live together.

"When I'm not here, I'm the co-ruler of an Empire," Ghanima said dryly. "Somehow, Fandom, in all its whimsy and madness, is less-stressful than the rest of my life. I spend a lot of time making tea and throwing knives. Take that as you will."

There was a turkey following Tahiri around the classroom today -- not a real one, but a small wind-up toy, nowhere near actual size. From her resigned expression, it might be easy enough to infer that it had been following her around all day and she'd given up trying to discourage it.

"Thanksgiving's coming up next week," she said, "or at least the American version of it, which is what the school will be celebrating. There are a lot of different holidays on Earth this time of year. A lot."

"Absurdity Day," Ghanima said helpfully, starting to tick things off on her fingers. "Thanksgiving, then either Black Friday or Buy Nothing Day, depending on your disposition. Then December has Hanukkah, the Winter Solstice, Mawlid Un Nabi, Christmas, and Boxing Day. January brings us the New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Epiphany, Orthodox Christmas Day, Orthodox New Year, Martin Luther King Day, and Tu B’Shevat."

"Americans like their holidays, especially religious ones."

Tahiri chuckled. "No kidding. You don't have to be familiar with all of them, but I find it helps with perspective just to have an idea of how many there are, and how they may vary depending on region or culture."

"You also don't have to be religious to celebrate some of the more culturally dominant ones," Ghanima added. "Thanksgiving, Winter Solstice and Christmas are often celebrated secularly as well, by people who decide to celebrate the family and togetherness aspect rather than the religious, imperialist, or capitalist connotations."

Tahiri waved a finger in a vaguely circular gesture. "I found a pretty good song that touches on that concept," she said, and hit play on her datapad. When the song was done she grinned apologetically. "It was cute, I couldn't help it."

"It's far superior to the vast majority of holiday music that gets played at this time of year," Ghanima assured her (and the rest of the class). "Some of you may have already noticed stores playing music called 'Christmas carols.' Yes, I know it's not even Thanksgiving yet, but for some reason they always start right after Halloween. It's also now the season of the Christmas movies, which I confess, I still don't understand."

"Neither do I. I suspect part of it has to do with growing up on desert worlds," Tahiri suggested. "All of these Christmas movies seem to take place in places with snow, at least the ones I've seen."

She shrugged. "I think we'd be interested in hearing if any of your worlds have holidays with about the same level of significance much of this part of Earth tends to give to Christmas . . . and maybe ought to remember to give to other winter holidays too."

UGH, snow. If Ghanima had a thousand more lifetimes in her tau, she was still never going to understand the fascination with snow. "What are your feast days?" she she said, agreeing with Tahiri. "--and are there any Earth holidays you'd like to adopt permanently?"

From the comfortable cushions strewn around the room and the audiovisual equipment up front, students might be able to guess what kind of class today would be.

"Yes, it's movie day," said Tahiri, pacing back and forth just beside the television. "Now, this movie's an Earth classic, from what I understand, and can actually be relevant to the Fandom experience. Specifically, the 'I just ran into my great-aunt, only she's younger than me and doesn't know she's going to be my great-aunt' one."

She paused, gave a self-conscious chuckle, and shook her head. "Well, maybe not quite that specific, but a very good friend and I used to make a game out of it at every welcome picnic, looking out for older or younger versions of anyone we might know from home." And that was about as specific as she was going to get.

"My family carries the gift of prescience," Ghanima chimed in, willing to get a bit more specific since her instance was no longer quite as... complicated as Tahiri's. "--But that doesn't mean I expected to see my own twin brother arrive at the school as a student a few years ago. Seeing all the lines of the future is not the same as automatically knowing what you can and cannot do to bring about the future you desire. One wrong misstep, and you can close a door forever."

"Which brings up another good point: do those of us who know or see the future have an obligation to preserve the future we know? If know someone must go on a trip, or must not, or that the person they're dating becomes a serial killer, what do you do? Stay silent and pray the present takes the same shape as your past, so that your future is realized? Or allow someone to forge their own future, free of your influence? How do we know if someone is our person, or one from an already alternate reality? Does it matter? What right do we have to dictate the future of another?" Ghanima asked. "For my part, I stayed silent about the future, but allowed Leto to make his own decisions without my interference or guidance. Our paths in the timeline have now caught up to be synchronised again, and I was rewarded with a fine sister-in-law and a darling niece that I was not expecting. But still, the future marches on."

"So you've all experienced at least one bout of Fandom Strangeness," Ghanima began once the bell had sounded. "While the reaction of the vast majority of the student body during an invasion is typically to find something and punch it until it stops, what do you do if you're not one for physical confrontation?"

"Or if you just aren't up for it for some reason or another," added Tahiri. "A lot of times, during invasions, classes tend to get cancelled because, well, not only is it pretty hard to concentrate when there are things attacking outside, but we know how a lot of you work. Force knows, when I was a student I'd be one of the first ones to drop everything and run out to fight something." She emphasized the admission with a smile and a guilty-as-charge shrug.

"Whereas while I am perfectly capable of eliminating physical threats -- and often enjoy it -- I often find I am of more use with whatever group is researching," Ghanima said. "I have a rather long memory, and I speak and read a number of languages; living, dead, and yet-to-be. This makes me a valuable resource when something must be translated."

"Since it always helps to know why we're hitting the people we're hitting, and what we have to do to stop doing it. And if that's not your thing either, but you still want to help . . . we used to have a support group that met regularly to prepare for these things. First aid, teamwork, things like that." Tahiri paused to brush her hair out of her eyes (and made a mental note to get a haircut sometime soon). "Even just having drinks and maybe something to eat for people can make a huge difference."

"The Clinic is usually a safe place to gather, and the nurses enjoy putting people to work, I hear," Ghanima continued. "We keep those same nurses hopping, so it's not just students and faculty that often need to be reminded to eat."

"Caritas also has a non-violence spell cast upon it, so if you're caught out in town when something starts happening, you can always retreat there to plan what you want to do next."

"Which may just be staying out of the way until it's all over," Tahiri said. "And if that's what you're most comfortable doing, by all means do so. Just . . . maybe make sure someone knows, so people don't worry that something's happened to you."

"Notes are always good, even if you're just running to get groceries," Ghanima agreed, "--and keep your phones fully charged in case of emergency. For instance, our blackout last weekend. That sort of thing can happen even outside Fandom's boundaries, and a phone battery can provide light, information, and communication. And if you get in over your head, there's no shame in calling for help."

"So, what do you think you'd be most likely to do? If . . . let's say there are a lot of strange creatures wandering all over the island, and there's a good chance you'll get attacked if you go outside?" asked Tahiri. "Feel free to share if you want to, or just think about it. It never hurts to be prepared for this stuff."

This week it was Tahiri standing alone at the front of the room, hands behind her back.

"Hi," she said with an apologetic half-smile. "Sorry for missing out last week, but there were some things I had to take care of back home that couldn't wait . . . and now Professor Atreides couldn't make it today, it seems."

She shrugged as if to say 'so you're stuck with just me, sorry.'

"So there's a holiday coming up this weekend, in case all the pumpkins and spooky decorations you might've seen around town weren't enough of an indication. Halloween. It isn't celebrated everywhere on Earth, and not always the same way in different countries," Tahiri continued. "I won't get into the details of its history, since I'm nowhere near an expert, but the costumes and carved pumpkins and people going around asking for candy that you're likely to see at least here on the island: the holiday's roots are in a festival to remember the dead, so these things evolved from those traditions. Of course, a lot of people are in it mainly for the candy and the fun of dressing up."

She waved a hand toward the back of the room, where there were several racks of moddable costumes. "I'm afraid you won't be able to keep these, but if you decide you want to join in on the costume fun on Saturday, I thought trying some of these on might give you ideas."

Not like th-- oh, who are we kidding, for some of you it's always like that.

"There's candy, too," she added, indicating a couple of bowls filled with also moddable mixed candies, "except that's real. Help yourself, but please don't make me have to scrape you off the walls or ceiling if you give yourself too much of a sugar high, okay?"

"Welcome back," Ghanima said once the last person had arrived. "Jedi Veila is unable to be with us today, so I'm afraid you're all stuck with me."

"Given that you've all just come back from fall break, and most likely have the Homecoming Dance on your minds, we're going to take it easy this week," she continued. "You're going to learn how to go to the movies!"

This week the Danger Shop was filled with large cushions, pillows, blankets, and overstuffed chairs, with two large whiteboards at the front and a pile of notebooks and pens by the door.

"Some of you may have already noticed that the island has decided to be strange today," Ghanima said cheerfully, once everyone had arrived. "In this case, it would appear the singing urge has hit us all again, so we're going to talk, write, or sing about some of the recurring bouts of whimsey the island sends us."

"Also, all of you can feel free to take a notepad and paper with you today, if you think you'll have any luck writing down what you want to say and keeping your singing voice private."

"You could always try expressing yourself in interpretive dance," Tahiri added, because she would never get over the impulse to be a smartass from time to time. "Though given the diversity of our student body there's no guarantee it'll be interpreted the way you intended."

But well...you're teenagers. )

The students had all received handwavey letters and emails telling them to meet in town today, with directions to Demon Marcus. "Fashion," Ghanima began. "You may have noticed by now that there is a wide variety of clothing worn at Fandom. We are a mesh of many cultures, and it is reflected in the fashions worn at school and about town."

"And for some of those cultures, fashion may have more significance than in others," Tahiri added. And the class lecture in the clothing store continued . . . )

"I have left my credit chip with the gentleman at the desk," Ghanima said crisply. "If you find something that is perfect for you, or that you'd be willing to wear and try that's more to this era than where you come from, put it on my account."

Sometimes, it was nice to be the Empress and not need to worry about your credit.

Which was good, since Tahiri would have done the same thing if she could have, but Jedi weren't exactly rolling in credits. So she just smiled, waved a hand at the clothes racks, and said, "Okay, go on, take a look around. And if you've got any questions, Sparkle over there is willing to field them."

"So this weekend you got a taste of what makes Fandom different," Ghanima said, once everyone had settled. "Namely, multiple universes, our habit of getting invaded suddenly, and gremlins."

"You may have realized over the last week that there are students here from the past, from the future, and some that look familiar but are not quite who you think they are. A friend, perhaps, but slightly different from the person you know, or a complete doppelgänger wearing a familiar face, but with a different name, different personality, and from another world altogether. These are not uncommon occurrences, and can be blamed on the fact that Fandom High acts as a multiversal nexus, connecting with several parallel universes."

"You all got the intense crash course version of it," Tahiri noted. "We don't usually have all of that happening in the same weekend, but I hate to tell you, you'll probably have to get used to it."

Thanks, Tahiri, that was helpful.

"There's also people who might be from your universe, or a different version of it, but a completely different point in time." She nodded slightly to Mara if she was there. "That's fun. You may know a younger version of someone from home, for example, and have to be careful not to tell them what happens to them in the future." And that was as much as she was going to say on that note, or she'd run the risk of making herself an object lesson.

See Ghanima, see Ghanima looking utterly angelic and trying not to snicker.

"Another aspect of the island that you may or may not already have some experience with would be the local wildlife," she continued. "We have the teel deer -- yes, deer that are a teal color, the alots, which are large shaggy animals, our rum-drinking squirrel reporters, and the gremlins."

"I must inform you that people under the influence of gremlin bites often act strangely, like someone completely different from their normal selves. Taking advantage of anyone under the influence of a gremlin bite in a malicious manner is frowned upon. Using your phones to record their antics, however, is a time-honored tradition."

"Just ask Master Skywalker -- or don't," Tahiri said, because she couldn't help herself. Also, she was absolutely not giving Ghanima a Look out of the corner of her eye. "It's likely to end up on radio one way or the other, thanks to those squirrel reporters. What it really comes down to is that this place is . . . sort of hard to write home about. Oh, and if you're uneasy having those deer around, just be careful not to talk a lot within their earshot. They're drawn to that."

"The last subject we'll touch on today is Fandom's history of invasions," Ghanima continued. "From time-to-time, hostile forces have attempted to claim the island for their own. Or worse yet, sometimes the enemy has been one that has no soldiers to fight; a plague, or a magical happening."

"During a hostile invasion, the safest location is in the dorms or at Caritas. For those of you prone not to take the safe route..." Because Ghanima knew the type of student Fandom attracted. "Make absolutely certain you don't travel alone, and you treat whatever invading force you encounter with the utmost caution and respect. This is not a game, there is no 'start over.'"

"And messing around because you're not taking it seriously enough is likely to get you or others, if not both, hurt." Tahiri had abandoned her lighter tone for a more serious one as well, now; perhaps without realizing it, she reached up to brush her fingers over the scars on her forehead as she spoke. "We're certainly not going to babysit you, or assume we know your capabilities better than you do. Just be responsible about it, and don't put someone else at risk because they had to come rescue you just because you wanted to show off, or thought it would be astral to play the hero. I can say from experience that afterward, it's no fun realizing how much of a mess you got other people into."

Today, the Danger Shop was set up as what could have been the hallway of any one of the dorm floors. When students entered they'd find themselves standing outside the common room, with the faint sound of the television drifting out from within. A little further down the hallway, the door to one of the dorm rooms was ajar.

For the final, the students met at the Causeway, and they had been instructed to wear whatever clothing they had purchased last week. Both Lady Ghanima and Captain Algren were dressed in contemporary attire again as well, and they were distributing tickets.

"Today," Algren said, "we're going to be putting what you've learned about modern times through this class and after spending a term on Fandom Island to the test. We won't throw you to the wolves, per se, but it is up to each and every one of you to conduct yourselves in a manner appropriate to the times during our outing today."

"We're taking a trip to the American Visionary Art Museum," Ghanima said. "And afterwards, we'll grab some fast food before heading back to campus, so that you don't miss lunch today."

"While an hour and a half is hardly enough time to take in the entire museum, we hope that you'll enjoy the outing, and take the opportunity to view both the exhibits and the other people in attendance."

"Keep an eye out for any works in the current Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness exhibition that reflect what it is we've told you about the mindset of people today," Algren added, "or if you're feeling ambitious, try to piece together what events through history have influenced the artists who have created these works."

He cracked a small smile. "Try not to burn down the building when we get there. And, if you enjoy this outing and find yourself wanting more before the next term begins, Lady Ghanima and myself are planning another outing for next week, a day trip on Sunday the 27th, for any of you interested in visiting a modern zoo or science center."

A portal then flickered into existence, and Ghanima gestured towards it with a smile. "Shall we?"

Today the Danger Shop was set up simply with pillows on the floor, for everyone to sit on.

"This week," Algren said once the students had filed into the classroom, "we're going to discuss a topic that seems to be near and dear to the hearts of most of the residents of the island in one way or another. We're going to discuss sexuality in this day and age, in Fandom's terms, more specifically." If he looked a little uneasy, that was possibly because he was having flashbacks of Sex Thru The Ages class.

Don't mind him.

Ghanima wasn't going to mind him. Captain Algren was a gentleman, and it was her understanding that they sometimes had Issues discussing these things in public. )

"What we're going to do today is break into groups," Ghanima replied, nodding at Algren. "Gentlemen, with the Captain to the far end of the room, please. Ladies, with me. This will be your chance to ask us any questions that you do not want to ask in front of the opposite gender, and we promise that anything said in the groups will be kept in confidence."

"For your homework after class, we ask that you go out with a classmate -- of either gender -- for lunch or coffee this week. Preferably someone from a world unlike your own. Talk to them. Get to know them. And afterward, think about the type of communication that would go into pursuing a relationship."

Class today had received handwavey notice to meet down on the beach by the boardwalk.

"There are some things that are constant, no matter where you are from," Ghanima began once everyone had arrived. "Honor. Duty. Service. Virtues that all civilized societies embrace."

"Today is a day that Americans set aside to honor those who have died honoring their duty to their country. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as 'Decoration Day,' it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor American Civil War, as it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the Civil War," with a slight nod to Algren. "It was expanded after World War I to include all soldiers who die in-service to the nation."

"Many people observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time. Another tradition is to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. Volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at National Cemeteries."

"It's also a long weekend," Algren said, standing there in his uniform with his hands clasped behind his back. Yes, this was his idea of paying his respects, as a Union veteran of the American Civil War. And? "Unless you're crazy enough to show up for classes here. So we're going to take it easy on the lot of you. Enjoy the beach. I'll be grilling burgers and hot dogs if you're hungry. And try to think patriotic thoughts, please."

Why Algren was crazy enough to stand over a barbecue on the beach in this heat in a full wool uniform was anybody's best guess. Just go with it.

"We'll have a moment of silence before we eat, in which we ask you to reflect on those who have died in the line of duty," Ghanima agreed. "And for those that are interested, Captain Algren and I will be headed to the mainland after class, to handwavily place poppies at a local memorial."

Once again, today's class was being held in the Danger Shop. The setup, for the time being, was fairly simple. It looked quite like a home office, with a computer and a phone, and, of course, two teachers waiting for the students once they filed in.

"Today," Algren said, looking over the class, "we're going to cover modern modes of transportation and methods of communication that you might encounter in your time as a student here. The current era is unique, when compared with other times throughout history, because technology now allows people to not only communicate with anybody around the world regardless of location, but also to drop by on their doorstep, should one have the time and the financial means to do so. Fandom takes it a step farther, utilizing the technological and magical advances of its citizens to allow people to communicate with people in different eras, galaxies, and universes as well."

Students met in the Danger Shop this week, which was set-up to resemble a regular classroom. "You've made it back," Ghanima said, looking over the class as people arrived. "Today we're going to go a bit more complex than last week; we'll be looking at what makes Fandom different from most other schools. Namely, the prevalence of parallel universes, the school's propensity for being invaded by hostile entities, and our mascot, the Gremlin."

Gremlins and Alternate Realities and Invasions, OH MY! )

"Today, for your practical, we'll be combining parts of what we've talked about today," Ghanima said. "We are playing a game of Tag against a special guest.. Please stand."

When the students filed into the Danger Shop today, they'd be met with two teachers, standing at the back of the room. The first to speak was the man, dressed in his Civil War era military uniform.

No particular reason, really. It was what had been clean this morning when he'd gotten out of bed.

Good Morning, class, and welcome to Fandom Island, America, on the planet Earth, in the year 2010. )

[OOC: OCD has arrived! Up early since both your teachers work at unholy hours of the morning tomorrow! Tentative class syllabus available here.]
