“All right guys. We have three meetings left, and thus it is time to start. Think of what sort of piece of Jewelry you are going to make, and plan it out. Let me know what materials you may need that are not in those cabinets over there. Try to think of everything, though I know it is difficult.”

She paused and walked around the room looking at the students.

“The workstations are available for you to work at. Feel free to talk amongst yourselves about your ideas.”

When everyone comes in, Agatha is waiting for them, with some soldering stations set up. There are torches and crucibles and everything one needs to solder silver or copper.

“alright guys. I have a horrid headache, so you get to work on your own. Practice the soldering the joins, and call me over if you have any questions.”

With that she put her head down and sighed.

[ooc: I am about to fly out to LA, eep. Will be around more tomorrow for slow play if you need, sorry about the lame ass class]

There are muffins and coffee and tea available for the workshop participants.

“Hello gang. Sorry about last class, I seemed to have slept through it.” She shrugged slightly. If you knew Agatha well, you’d see she was a bit worried. “Last time we talked about metal. Today we are going to talk about stones. As you may be aware, precious, semi-precious and other stones get put into jewelry time after time.”

Agatha put sa wide variety of faceted and cabochon stones on the table for everyone to inspect. She separates them into several groups. “These here are completely fake. They are not real rubies and sapphires. This is cubic zirconium, not a diamond. These are cheap but look pretty.” She points to another group “these are synthetics. They are the real thing, real rubies, real sapphires. They wer ehwoever grown in the lab to be nearly perfect. They are not as cheap a sthe fakes, but they are muchcheaper then this next group.” She walks over a bit and points to the last group. “these ones were founding nature and cut or polished to the current state. The yare highly prized and very expencive.” She pulsl out several more cabochons from her pocket. “These are not stones at all. These are pine tree rasin. Also known as Amber, natures preservative. This one has a bug inside. The rest are just pretty. They are cheap, and hard to work with. You can not heat your metal with Amber in it. But they sure are pretty to look at.”

She looked over the class. “Take a look at the different stones, feel them. See if you can perceive a difference.”

“Today, we are going to talk about the history of Jewelry and also learn to work with metals. If you look at this handout you will see that Jewelry has been used for hundreds of thousands of years. It has been used at decoration, as money, as bribes and in religious ceremonies. It has been made from a wide variety of materials, with only one thing in common. Almost always, the materials are of a hard and nearly indestructible nature. One wants these things to last forever, right?”

She looked around the room. “I you to divide into groups and to pick a material that you know Jewelry to be made of. Then you can make a little presentation about your material for the rest of the gang here.”

after that

“Now, lets take a lookat metal. It is by far not a requirement to use it but I want you to be familiar with it. This is silver. It is a precious metal, but easier to work with then gold. You are getting 20 gauge silver wire. I would like you to wrap it tightly around the dowels provided over there and saw through with the jewelers’ saw. You will get a number of jumprings, which you can connect into a chain.”

*Handwavey* notes appeared for all students that the Jewelry workshop will be in Agatha’s shop.
Agatha came in and surveyed the room. “Welcome guys. This is introductory Jewelry, and I am Agatha. Some of you know me from last term, some of you know me from around town.” She waved to John.

“This workshop is about doing something fun and beautiful. Because really, that is what jewelry is. We will learn basic techniques that will enable you to make several small pieces. However, today we are going to talk a bit about what jewelry is and make sure you are aware of all the safety procedures. Come this way.”

She will walk around the workshop showing them various bits of equipment. “Ok, this is the ventilation hood. Chemicals have to be used under here, and also the torches. These are oxy-acetylene torches, which means they combine the acetylene in this tank with the oxygen around you to burn.” She turns the knob and strikes the striker. “This is how you turn it on. This knob controls the size of flame. Don’t touch the flame, it is hot. Her eis the dremmel machine. It’s a flex-shaft, so be careful. It is for drilling, and for fine polishing work. And this is the pickle solution. Don’t put your hands in here. Also, don’t put ANYTHING that is stainless steel in there, it will copper plate everything you have in there.” She quickly closes the crock-pot of pickle solution, due to the heavy acidic smell. “This is where the tools are kept. There are pliers, and cutters and bristle brushes and everything here. There is also sheet metal and wire. You should have everything you need.” The cabinet is indeed full of all kinds of jewelry supplies, funky shaped saws and files and everything.

“The med kit is here. You should totally not ever need it, but just in case. Now, please introduce yourselves, and tell me, what is Jewelry? Describe a piece of jewelry you have seen that epitomized the term to you.”
