Fraser hadn't ever prepared a final examination so he was fairly sure he'd been too light and far too lenient but he didn't much care. He was confident the students retained the knowledge they needed so he felt no real need to try and make them recite it all back to him. Their true tests would come in real life, practical situations.

"Good day to you all and I hope your week of finals is going well," he said, nodding to them. "Just like all the other classes, we're going to be taking a final as well. It's fairly straightforward but I would like you to work on your own. Once you've finished, you can leave and I wish you good luck on your other finals and a good break. Let's begin."

With that, he passed out the one question final and let the students start working on it.

"So, next week is the last class," Fraser began, smiling at the students once they'd settled down. "And I'd like to thank you all for adjusting so quickly to the change that took place during this particular class. I know it couldn't have been easy. Due to that, I wanted to let you all have this period as sort of a review for the final. I know you studied quite a bit of material before I arrived and I wanted to give you the opportunity to review all that in preparation for your final."

Fraser nodded to several of the handouts at the front of the room. "I've made copies of everything you've been given this semester in case you need it so feel free to study with each other or study quietly. And, if you think you don't need to study, feel free to play The Oregon Trail for the period."

With that said, Fraser nodded and took his seat at the front of the room.

"Today," Fraser said once everyone had taken their seats, "we're going to be discussing American Civil War medicine. In simpler terms, we're going to look at the advent of battlefield medicine since this was a war that dominated the times. Both the Union and the Confederacy had different methods of dealing with their wounded and sick."

Fraser passed out a few pages of handouts, giving the students an opportunity to read over it themselves as he gave a light lecture. "When the war began, the Union had virtually no way to take care of their wounded. They eventually took control of several private hospitals but can you imagine going into a war without the ability to treat the injured? It would cause mass disease and death at the least. The Union made great strides as the war progressed, eventually embedding surgeons with the armies and setting up field hospitals to immediately deal with the wounded."

Fraser paused for a brief moment. "The Confederacy was quicker to establish a medical corp but they were also underfunded and under supplied so, though they had the right idea, they were at a considerable disadvantage. The Confederacy lacked field hospitals and, instead, sent their injured home on furloughs. Despite this progress on both sides, people would still die dramatically because the simplest gunshot wound could become infected and would either cause amputation or death. Medical staff was under qualified and under supplied so despite their best efforts, they weren't able to do very much. I don't have any activity planned for today so I'd just like you all to take some notes and, once that's done, you're free to stay or go."

Fraser was back in front of the classroom, paging through a book while he waited for those enrolled in the class to find their seats and get settled. Once they did, he started the class.

When the students entered the classroom today, they wouldn't see their regular teacher but a man decked out in full uniform, looking slightly worried after listening to last night's radio broadcast.

"Good morning," he greeted cordially. "I know some of you know me and others don't so, for those that don't, I am Constable Benton Fraser of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Here, I'm more likely known as the head of security and today, I'm filling in for your professor who has had to take a leave of absence. For today, we'll be watching a movie since the administration knows this change is sudden and we don't want to throw you right into learning with a new teacher just yet. Rest assured, more substantial lessons will follow. For now, just enjoy the movie."

He paused for a moment, debating whether or not to say something further. In the end, he thought it best to just say it. "And please do be careful out there. It's rather...eerie."

"Ah, medieval medicine," he said as they walked. He was smiling, but it was a smile that said that there was a certain amount of amusement tempered by something else.

"You've heard the horror stories, no doubt. Leeches. Incense. All manner of... terrible treatments, cobbled together from what was left of the classical medical texts and whatever doctrine they thought made sense.

"Most of the class we've discussed what historical medicinal practices have brought to modern study, but while there are perhaps some portions of the practices that aren't ghastly, suffice to say that modern medicine seeks to step away from what was practiced at this time as opposed to taking much from it."

"Today," Nick started, watching his students pile in, "we'll be dealing with alchemy. Now, as alchemy isn't anything that really requires study, per se, and I'm sure you all have some idea of what it might be about" though he started passing out handouts on the subject, I'd like this to be more of a discussion class."

"My apologies," he said to his class as they walked in, "for being absent the other week. I'm sorry to say that I was unable to come in."

As he'd overslept and then been unable to go out to get to the school building.

"But today, we're doing Chinese medicine. I'm sure some of you are familiar with parts of it, or you've at least heard of it. And some of this... it's hard to call it 'history' as people are still using these concepts and these treatments today all over the world. Acupuncture, acupressure, herbal remedies... a great deal of it has seeped into our understanding of medicine. Let's dig into the basics, however, shall we?"

Wherein Nick did not kill an acupuncturists mother, no, really, it was LaCroix, not that I can blame the kid for trying to remember THAT face. )

Nick was nowhere to be seen when the class arrived today. Instead, they had Claire standing in front of the room, looking equal parts nervous and excited.

"Hey, guys," she said. "Professor Chevalier called me this morning and said he couldn't make it today. Since I don't know much about the history of medicine, I figured we could talk about the future of medicine instead."

And something she personally knew about.

"Evolutionary Biology is the study of how a species changes over time. It first emerged as an academic discipline in the 1930s and 40s, but didn't really hit its stride until the 1970s and 80s. Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution was a driving force in the field. There is some scientific basis for the theories of human evolution, given the vestigial organs our bodies currently possess, like the appendix and wisdom teeth. They obviously served a purpose at some point in our history, but as our bodies evolved, those functions were no longer necessary."

Claire paused to flip through the notes she had hastily put together.

"Some people believe that the future of human evolution is the development of superhuman abilities, something we have numerous examples of here in Fandom. So let's discuss that. What kind of powers and abilities have you seen here or at home? Do you think they are the result of evolutionary biology or something else?"

Nick did not really follow the radio much. That was why, say, if someone had caught last weeks broadcast and picked up on something, or, say, had a few questions, Nick might blink and move the topic along.

That said, they had work to do today.

"We're going to take a step back instead of forward today and deal with Ancient Babylon. Babylon is the step between some of the Greek concepts and their Egyptian forefathers. Read more... )

Nick looked somewhat unhappy in class today, unhappy and a little bit on edge. That said, there was nothing actually wrong or out of line in the way he conducted class. Just a lack of joy.

"Today, we'll be doing the medicine of Ancient Greece. Our lesson will focus on, obviously, Hippocrates as well as his another physician, Galens, who extended some of his ideas while also adding his own." Read more... )

Today, at the front of the class was a TV and a DVD player.

"I'm sorry to say that there was a bit of a... family emergency for me this week, so we'll be watching a movie." He held up the case. "Suffice to say it doesn't actually have much to do with today's subject, but I thought it might be amusing, considering the title. Either way, you're welcome to stay and watch. I've brought in some treats from JGOB off to the side over there, and a few drinks as well."

And Nick slunk back to his desk as the film started.

Another normal classroom set up in the Danger shop, though the day outside didn't look like Maryland so much as a certain region of France and it was a great deal warmer near the 'windows' than it would have been otherwise.

"Today, we'll be covering Egyptian medicine, and what the ancient society added to the idea of healing." And here we go... )

He pushed away from the desk.

"Now, if we could get started, I'd like to do a quick discussion. I know I've talked for a while, but I hope I wasn't too boring for you."

The Danger shop was once more doing it's duty in... looking exactly like a normal classroom. One day, someone was going to ask him about this. For today, however, Nick was smiling and leaning against his desk as the class walked in.

"Welcome in," he said cheerfully, "and let's get started."

In the spirit walk we are young forever. Good deal, huh? )

"Now, I'd like to do a discussion for the rest of class. I've assigned Claire and Savannah as my teaching assistants, so if you need anything in this or other classes, catch their eye if you can't catch mine."

Professor Chevalier welcomed them into the Danger Shop with a rather normal classroom setting and a smile. One might wonder why he used the Danger Shop, since he wasn't doing anything particularly special this time around, but one need only look at the sunlight streaming into the fake room and the smile on his face to put two and two together.

Once everyone was seated, he started passing around a copy of the syllabus.

"Welcome, all of you, to the history of medicine. I'm not sure what you all expected of this class, but we'll be covering some of the more ancient beliefs, the origin of practices, as opposed to more... modern milestones. I certainly hope this isn't a problem."

When he was done, he returned to the front of the class and leaned back against his desk.

"Now, since this is the first class, we'll mostly be doing introductions and I will be looking for an assistant or two, if anyone is interested. But first," and he pointed to the closest person, "name, class, and either something interesting or why you decided to take the class."
