Once again, the students would enter their classroom to find a ring of comfortable cushions and pillows arranged at the center, and their instructor already comfortably sitting on one of them, a cup of tea in his hand, a pot and several more cups for the students waiting before him. On the board, scrawled in large letters to take up the space was a quote:

"Peace is always beautiful. - Walt Whitman"

Shunsui smiled quite peacefully himself at the students as the settled into their spots and, once they had and the offer of tea was made, he began.

"Hello, ducklings ♥," Shunsui greeted the students. "Welcome back ♥. I assure you, not every class will be quite like this, sitting around and discussing matters, but it is a rather good way to ease on into our exploration of the Art of Peace, neh ♥? And today, I'd like to ask a very important question that will no doubt guide us on the rest of our journey, and that is....what is Peace, exactly? What does it mean to be peace-ful? Let's explore, shall we ♥?

Peace is always rambly... )

"But..." Here Shunsui broke off with a faint chuckle, "talk about it is exactly what we'll be doing....for now ♥. This is, obviously, a very large topic, with many nuances and facets, and I'd like to know what you think ♥. What are you own personal philosophies on peace ♥? What does your society say about it? What obstacles present itself in obtaining your ideal of true peace ♥? No wrong answers, of course ♥! Just a discussion to help understand and maybe open our minds and eyes to perspectives that may not be our own ♥.

"Who would like to begin ♥?"

It was not uncommon for Shunsui to be completely unaware of things that might have been going on over the weekend; after all, this was the man who had unwittingly wandered into prom having completely forgotten that there was such a thing. And this weekend had been very much about catching up on the naps he'd been missing out on while he was back in Soul Society under the firm glare of his lieutenant and having to introduce and train a whole gaggle of new ducklings into his division.

But now it was back to these ducklings, and whatever other smaller ducklings they may have possibly have with them.

"Good morning, ducklings ♥!" There was a certain sleepiness in his smile that suggested that he still hadn't quite caught up with the napping as much as he'd like, but, then again, that was also just his face. "I would apologize for not being with you last week, but I know you were in excellent, capable, lovely hands with our dear sweet Rosa-chan, so I will instead say you're welcome ♥."

He, personally, would have loved to have been a student in this class last week.

"Now," he said, "if I am to understand correctly, the indomitable Rosa-chan taught you all a variety of self-defense moves to fend off an attack, which is a very useful skill if one embraces the idea that self-defense has a comfortable spot in the concept of pacifism. However, should one happen to believe that any sort of violence at all in inherantly against the tenets of this belief, then what is one to do when faced with someone far more violent in nature ♥? That is what I would like to discuss today, ducklings: what are some alternate ways to avoid violence in a confrontation ♥? It's been a while since we've had a little chat, so I'll let you take the lead on this one ♥. Tell me, what might you do to avoid violence, or what can you suggest that others try ♥?"

Or, maybe, he was just fielding the question directly to the students because he was unprepared for class and was just hoping they'd take care of it from there. It was an awfully quiet class, though, so there was at least one inherant flaw in this particular method.

But oh well! At least there was cocoa ♥!

The students might assume something was up the moment they saw the sign on the classroom door that was distinctly lacking in hearts...or really disctinctly lacking in much of anything at all except for one single word:

GYM.

And, when they arrived at the gym, they would find a very different curly-haired instructor than their usual one waiting for them, and definitely no cocoa. Just a lot of mats and an irritated presence.

"So," Rosa started, "apparently, don't ever agree to help out with someone's class, because, if you do, the moose in the office thinks you're a good substitute teacher for that class, despite the moose in the office being the direct focus of many threats that prove you are quite possibly the least pacifist person on the entire staff."

Well, that might be a stretch, but, honestly, if you thought about it? Rosa put in a pretty good run for that title. The competition was pretty fierce, though.

"Anyway," she said, "I don't believe in pacifism, like, at all, I think it's dumb and this whole class is just a waste of your time or a good way for you to wind up getting your ass kicked by someone someday, but I hate dealing with that stupid moose, and so here we are. And I'm going to teach you some self-defense moves you can use when you reach that point where you realize that pacifism is dumb because it's a good excuse for someone to just kick your ass, and it's more direct than that Aikido stuff we did the other week. So, pay attention. I'm only going to go over this once."

That was very untrue, she would definitely break it down if needed, but Rosa figured that, by saying as much, it would lessen the chance that any of them bothered her about it any more than necessary.

"Good morning, good morning, my intrepid little ducklings ♥~~~," Shunsui sang from the discussion circle with his hot cocoa comfortably in his hands, lifting up his little mug in greeting and having a sip. "All this talk about passive-ism and self-defense and things of the like have gotten me thinking we're due for a discussion about the concept of being a conscientious objector ♥. A conscientious objector, you see, is an individual who has claimed the right to refuse to perform military service on the grounds of freedom of thought, conscience, or religion ♥. Some countries will allow a conscientious objector serve through civilian services; some countries will allow them not at all...As far as this world goes, the United Nations Commission on Human Rights have roundly agreed that an individual has the right to be a conscientious objector to military service if it goes against his or her beliefs, something I rather wish my own world and my Captain-Commander would be more open to considering, but....alas... ♥."

Fleeing off to a different dimension to teach and run a general store was the closest thing Shunsui could get.

Objection! )

"And so ♥," Shunsui concluded, finishing with another smile, light and faint, "let's hear your own thoughts on the matter ♥. Or, of course, you can also choose to conscientiously object to the topic at hand, and simply keep your thoughts to yourself ♥."

The classroom and the cocoa were back (although, really, one could argue that the cocoa never really left); Shunsui was sitting at his usual spot in the circle, all things that should be a sign to the students that another discussion class was in order.

Although, really, he'd gone and taught an actual lesson that involved doing things last week, so it should be assumed that he figured he'd put in more than his fair share of effort and another discussion class was completely earned

"Welcome back, ducklings ♥!" he gave his usual greeting and smile. "Today I'd like to have a discussion," suprirse!, "about last week's class, where the lovely, lovely Rosa-chan," and here he spared a small little pout for the current lack of her radiant and cheerful presence this week, "and I taught you about Aikido &hearts, and, this week, I would like to hear your thoughts on it ♥. Things like Aikido have its roots in the non-agression principle of pacifism. While nonviolence rejects the use of violence, non-aggression rejects the use of aggression ♥! Aggression is defined as the initiation of a physical force against person or property, and does not reject the idea of self-defense in response to aggression initiated against yourself.

"We saw in class how something like Aikido can be used to still be fairly nonviolent while also being non-agressive, but can it truly be considered pacifism ♥? Does a true pacifist absolve from all physical conflict? Or are there exceptions, as just remaining passive in the face of violence only propagates the violence ♥? Is there a happy medium? What did you, personally, think of the self-defense philosophy of Aikido and how it applies to your own perceptions of pacifism so far? Let's discuss ♥!"

Or just nap.

Napping will always be a valid option in this class. In fact, Shunsui would enthusiastically support the idea that it was one of, if not the best, example of practicing pacifism he could think of.

As the students headed to class, they would find a note on the door, clearly from their teacher by the liberal use of hearts scattered across the pink flowery paper:

♥♥♥♥♥
Please meet me in the gymnasium, little ducklings!
I hope you're feeling limber this morning!

♥♥♥♥♥

Since everyone's probably had their fair share of cocoa lately, anyway.... )

Shunsui smiled again, bobbing his head in a nod. "So let us think about these things as I'll teach you a few more Aikido moves, and then I would like you to pair up and practise with each other. If we turn out uneven, either myself or Detective Rosa-chan will work with you, whichever of us if the better match ♥. Remember, we are just diverting energy and the point is to avoiding harming the other person, even if they may intend to harm you ♥. Please ask any questions you may have, and allow me or Detective Rosa-chan to demonstrate more should you feel you need a bit more guidance on the moves ♥."

Having the second class of the week right after an absolutely lovely vacation like that was hardly what Shunsui would call an 'optimal situation,' and he considered bestowing upon his students an 'expanded vacation' by just not having class at all, but something in the back of his mind (or in the frequently envisioned disapproving face of his lieutenant in his bonsai tree) told him that doing so would lead to just a whole string of canceled classes in the futurue, so he might as well just go.

It wasn't like they had to actually do anything, after all.

"Welcome back, my little ducklings ♥!" Shunsui greeted them sleepily, tiredly, but cheerfully, once they were all gathered and cocoa'd. "I hope those of you who had gone on the trip had a wonderful time and those of you who may have done something else found something enjoyable to do all the same ♥ Today, actually, since I'm sure we're all still quite in vacation mode and not quite ready to relinquish it to get back to business, I figured today we might as well just share our stories ♥. A vacation is a wonderful example of pacifism in action," sure, Shunsui; it was, perhaps, not exactly the furthest stretch he'd ever made, "assuming, of course, you weren't spending that vacation actively picking fights and punching," since punching seemed popular with this particular batch of students, "people ♥. So that's what we'll do this week. We'll just sit around, enjoy each other's company, and share our tales of our last week, and then next week, we'll get back to it properly ♥."

Maybe.

"Pretty easy, neh ♥?"

"Ahhhh ♥," Shunsui, as always, had a happy little smile for his students as they came into class, found their spot in the discussion circle, and could take up their cups of cocoa, "good morning, my little ducklings ♥. I hope you are all ready for another venture into the Art of Pacifism ♥! Now, my notes suggested a unit on self-defence at this point in the course, but, well, that's a topic that covers a series of classes, and with the break coming up next week, I thought it best to save those for when we get back ♥. So, instead, you'll have to forgive me at least one more rambling exploration into another sort of pacifism, and that would be the art of anarcho-pacifism ♥."

Funny thing about a week like this one. While a Soul like Shunsui was hardly going to be affected by what had begun to permiate the air, the same could not be said for the temporary physical body that that Soul currently inhabited. But it also wasn't exactly a difference that Shunsui was likely to notice that much, anyway, all things considered.

Either way, there was a class to be had, and When the students came into the classroom today, they'd find a text sitting beside their mugs of cocoa. "My duckings ♥," Shunsui said with a pleased smile once everyone got settled, "I have quite a treat for you today ♥! Today, we are going to be discussing one of my favourite pieces of literature, besides, of course, my own book, The Rose-Colored Path ♥." Forgive him if he couldn't exactly refuse a perfectly natural little plug there. "Written by a very smart and clever Greek by the name of Aristophanes, this play is a political satire against the Peloponnesian War of Ancient Greece, where the illustrious woman of the play's title comes up with a most intriguing solution to peace: she rallies up the women of the Grecian world to form a pact to finally bring an end to the war by withholding sex. Devastating, I know ♥! But incredibly effective; as the play itself points out, a man cannot concentrate on swinging his sword when his other sword needs swinging ♥."

That was a horrible metaphor even on a normal day, Shunsui, let alone this one, and he should be ashamed of himself, but, of course, he was not.

"It's a classic example of the 'make love, not war' philosophy that had a more recent modern example in this dimension and in this country in the 1960s ♥. It was the Vietnam War rather than the Peloponnesian War, then, and it was an actual movement instead of a parody play designed to make a point, but the idea is the same: it is much better to offer our fellow brothers and sisters love rather than war ♥.

"Naturally, though the play is short, I cannot expect for you to all have it read by the end of the class," especially not with particular...distractions that were more than likely, "and still have time to discuss it, so I have given you each a copy to take home and read over the week." Because, yes, that's what you'd all want to do this week, read. "We will discuss the idea of love over war today, and then again next week after you've had a chance to read through the text and see if it manages to influence your opinion any ♥. Today's discussion, then, shall be a broader one: does love have any place in war? Is it necessary to have love to keep a war humane? Or is there no such thing as humane war, and therefor, love could only interfere with the success of a war? The play was written to make people laugh, but it suggests that the world is a better place when people spend more time with each other than with their weapons ♥. The war is a senseless waste of time, money, and resources, while peaceful times are spent building the nation; wars not only break the nation, but it also disturbs families and relationships. And, of course, in unity, there is strength ♥. This could be said for either side of the coin, but isn't it much better to have that unity in peace rather than war ♥?

"When the Chorus of Men claim, 'There is no beast, no rush of fire, like woman so untamed. She calmly goes her way where even panthers would be shamed,' the Chorus of Women proclaim in response, 'And yet you are fool enough, it seems, to dare to war with me, when for your faithful ally you might win me easily.' Perhaps it is just me, but it seems to ask, Why go into war when peace could easily be an option ♥? Or is it not so easy? Is holding back something...anything...that the other party might need, be it sex or be it goods or resources or hostages or treasures, and refusing to give it back without the promise of peace a nefarious course of action ♥? Or is any means of achieving peace, especially if it may avoid violence, acceptable means ♥?

"'We love peace, but not peace at any price,' says Douglas Jerrold, and Marvin Gaye, another personal favourite, informs us that 'War is not the answer, because only love can conquer hate.' But where do you stand on the place of love in war ♥?"

"Good afternoon morning it always said morning *whistles*, ducklings ♥!" The classroom was in its usual state of desks pushed back to make room for a comfy circle in the middle with the requisite hot cocoa, but there were also several other boxes scattered around, and Shunsui had in front of him a pile of paper with something that looked like a list.

"So far in this class, we have had the opportunity to discuss a lot of the methods and ideas behind pacifism, and so today will be more activity-based ♥. It is, after all, one thing to be able to know a bunch of rambling thoughts and philosophy on a subject, and an entirely different thing to put some of these beliefs into action in our every day lives ♥. Now, we're starting very very simply today: one of the best ways to help live a life of nonviolence is to have a nice, nonviolent hobby ♥! Perhaps even something that one can channel any aggressive energy they may have and turn it into something beautiful in the end ♥. That way, one is actively adding to the beauty of the world rather than contributing to negativity and anger and hate ♥.

"Now," he continued with a faint chuckle, a small, serene smile on his face as he ducked his head slightly, "I'm sure you can all take a guess as to what my hobby is ♥!"

If you were thinking drinking or sleeping or womanizing, you were wrong.

Those were lifestyles, not mere hobbies.

"Writing ♥!" Shunsui announced proudly. "I am the author of two published books, you know, and I am working on a third ♥." The same third book he was working on last time he taught this class, no less! "To me, writing is like releasing the poetry of the soul onto paper so you can share it with others ♥. But that is just one example of a peaceful hobby, or a hobby in which one can engage as a sort of self-meditation, as a centering technique to remove oneself from the insanity of life and absorb themselves in the tranquility of creation ♥. One of the kindest and most peaceful women I know, for example, is an expert at Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement ♥. One of the less peaceful women I know turns to organization to calm her down ♥. One could maintain a zen garden, or knitting, I hear, is still quite popular! Make scarves, not war ♥! There are, of course, traditional forms of art, from painting and drawing to sculpture work and pottery. And, speaking of women I know," of which there were clearly many, "I can think of at least two who would insist wholeheartedly that shopping is a hobby, though having seen one of them engaged in such actions, I would argue that it is hardly a peaceful one ♥."

Here Shunsui chuckled, and started to pass around the papers.

"On these papers is a list of various hobbies to give you some inspiration ♥. Of course, you are not limited to these options, and you are to avoid any of the violent ones, such as hunting or lawn darts..." The latter of which eventually had to be outlawed at Shinigami picnics... "But these boxes in the classroom today have anything you might need to get you started on exploring a new hobby, and that is what today is for ♥! Try to find something that you think sounds relaxing, meditative, productive, and most importantly new to help keep you away from the ever present sway of negative influences ♥!"

"Go forth, my little ducklings, and discover something new ♥! And, of course, if you've got any questions, I'll be happy to help if I can ♥."

He wouldn't even fall asleep while they all worked today, either!

...probably not, anyway.

Hot chocolate and comfy pillows to sit on in the middle of the room with a teacher beaming peacefully at his students? Must be another Monday in the classroom designated for the Art of Pacifism, and another one where the teacher was ready to do a lot of rambling talking to promote deep and peaceful thoughts and/or deep and peaceful spacing out.

"Hello, little ducklings ♥," Shunsui greeted the students. "Now, I promise you that not every class will be quite like the ones we've had so far, all discussion and drinking, but I figured we might have ourselves at least one more lengthy discussion, about the very fundamentals of what we are talking about here in this class ♥. We've discussed examples of when perhaps pacifism might not be the best route thanks to our own personal experience here on this very island, and we've discussed an example of taking pacifism to its extreme with Jainism, but what is the main goal in all of this ♥? Pacifism itself is an opposition to war or violence, neh &hearts? Which would stand to reason, then, that the crux of pacifism is indeed the opposite of war and violence, which is peace. But what, exactly, is peace? What does it mean to be peace-ful? Let's explore, shall we ♥?"

'Peace is always beautiful.' - Walt Whitman. )

"In general, these are very large topics, but it is important to consider them and look at them if we are to embrace the Art of Pacifism and achieve peace, be it in our personal worlds or in the wider world around us ♥. This has also been an extremely quick overview, which has left out much by necessity, or else we'd be here all day ♥! But that is where you all come in ♥. What are you own personal philosophies on peace ♥? Your societies'? Do you agree with the tenants in which you were brought up, or not? What defines peace to you and how do you best achieve it, within yourself or within the world around you ♥? What obstacles present itself in obtaining your ideal of true peace ♥? No wrong answers, of course ♥! Just a discussion to help understand and maybe open our minds and eyes to perspectives that may not be our own ♥. Who would like to start ♥?"

"Welcome back, my little ducklings ♥!" Shunsui already had the desks moved away from the center of the room, and was sitting there ready for them to settle into their circle. Mugs of hot cocoa, this time with slowly melting little mini-marshmallows, were already waiting for them as well. "Today, I wish to explore a little the concept of 'Do no harm,' which one could argue, and do so quite convincingly, is the very heart ♥ of the Art of Pacifism, and, more specifically, I'd like tospeak with you all about Mahavira ♥, the ancient reformer of the Jainism religion, which prescribes its followers to take the path of nonviolence toward all living beings ♥. He was born as Prince Vardhaman in a place called Kundgraam ♥. It is said that, even in the womb, he brought wealth and prosperity to his kingdom, like the abundant bloom of beautiful flowers in the springtime $hearts;. He did not let his status as a prince allow him to fall into the spoils of royalty and privilege, though, adopting practices of meditation and self-contemplation even at a young age ♥. Still, it took him until the age of thirty to renounce his kingdom, release himself of worldly possessions and went into life as an ascetic ♥. That was twelve years spent mostly in meditation and dedicating himself to not harming a single person, animal, or plant ♥. He gave up all possessions, including..." Please, forgive Shunsui the eyebrow waggle, "clothing ♥. He earned his name of Mahavira and spent the rest of his life preaching the things he'd learned on his spiritual journey ♥. He attained the state of Nirvana at the age of 72 and 4 months."

Which was a blink of an eye to Shunsui, really, but he didn't have any intention of giving up worldy possessions anytime soon.

Except maybe clothing... )

"So it all comes down to that. Intention ♥. Even if one does not succeed in killing, if his intention was to kill, he is still a killer. If one pursues something in good faith, and there is still a death as a result, that person is absolved from being a killer as there was no true intent.

"One may claim, then, that a pacifism of the Jaina vein is a pacifist through the utmost awareness of his or her surroundings and actions ♥. They are constantly vigilant on what actions might cause violence in even the slightest ways, and strive to avoid them. But enough talk from me ♥. It is now your turn, ducklings ♥, what do you think? Is the Jaina concept of Ahimsa a realistic or reachable goal? In which ways would you say it succeeds or fails? No wrong answer, no strict order, just a discussion to consider all the variety of opinions that are sure to exist with such an ecclectic group ♥. Who wants to start ♥?"

When the students arrived in the classroom for their lesson, they would find all the desks shoved aside to make room for a variety of cushions and pillows set in a loose circle at the center of the room, and their instructor, all flowing robes and slightly battered straw hat, already sitting there in the circle quite comfortably, pouring himself some hot cocoa...and maybe looking a little sleepy, though he was trying his very best to power through that right now; this was just a bit early for him. But, sleepy as he may be, he greeted each student brightly and enthusiastically as they entered, with varying degrees of "Come in, come in ♥! Have a seat ♥! And some cocoa, while we wait for the others ♥!" until it looked like they were ready to begin.

The final day of class was probably just as anyone may have been expecting it to be: the classroom, set up as always with a circle at the centre with hot chocolate available for everyone to indulge and sip. And Shunsui sitting there, beaming at them all as they settled and, once they did, he let out a thoughtful sigh.

"Ahhhh, my little ducklings ♥," he said. "Parting is such sweet sorrow, but we do not have to part quite yet, so let us not think on it ♥. We still have a whole class period ahead of us and, as I mentioned last week, this class is all about you ♥. No tests; what a terrible waste of paper and so boring besides ♥! All I ask of you in our final meeting are your thoughts, and we all have those: what, after this class, are your thoughts on pacifism ♥? Do you support it ♥? Are you against it ♥? Do you have an idea of how pacifism should or could work ♥? Let us all take turns, and let us all wander the paths of consciousness that may open up in our discussions ♥. And, of course, let us all drink to health and happiness ♥!"

He lifted his mug in a bit of a toast and took a swig as though it weren't cocoa at all, but his usual sake. There was actually a good chance that his cup actually was the usual sake...

"Who wishes to begin, ducklings ♥?"

Shunsui was thinking he should make the switch to iced tea for class since spring was on the way, but it was still fairly cloudy and gloomy out, despite the warmth, so he stuck with the comforting hot cocoa at least for a little bit. He greeted his students with the usual lazy smile.

"Hello, my little ducklings ♥!" he said. "Can you believe it, our time together is almost up ♥! So let us not waste what we have left with too much work ♥. Our last two classes will be all for you ♥. Today, I would like to know what you would like to know ♥. If there is any area of our broad and oversweeping generalization of pacifism that you might want to know more about, or that you feel is lacking, then we will go over that today ♥. And then next week...I should hardly want you to suffer through some bogus examination, but I am curious as to what your interpretation of pacifism may be after my attempts to open your eyes ♥. Next week, you'll tell me: what is pascifism to you ♥? So there's no wrong answers, no right answers, just you, your opinions, and some food for thought ♥.

"But now let us talk of things already passed ♥. Would you like to know more about something we've covered ♥? More on something we didn't ♥? Or perhaps you're just too distracted with the upcoming prom to care ♥?" He chuckled. "Like I said, it's your day today ♥."

He was pretty easy like that.

"So allow me to lead you through learning some moves, and then I will let you all take a chance to practise on your own ♥. If you would like to partner up, please do, but remember, this is not a fight, but an evasion of a fight ♥. No weapons in partnered Bāguàzhǎng, either, please ♥."

Anarchy in the Nineteenth Century Romanticism )

"I could speak of the development of anarcho-pacifism all day, really ♥." Shunsui gave a smile to the class. "As you can tell, it is a deeply philosophical and often literary philosophy, with a deep and involved history, as many of these facets of pacifism tend to be. But you are not here just to listen to me speak; you are here to have voices yourselves ♥. The usual questions, then, follow: what are your thoughts on anarcho-pacifism? Or anarchy as a philosophy as a whole? Can you think of other forms of practising anarcho-pacifism, and what are you own experiences, if any, with it ♥? Is it something you think could be effective ♥? Or is it just a bunch of romantic dreamers attempting to live a life difficult to obtain ♥? What about the deeper political reasoning here....is a government naturally unjust? Are certain disagreements and injustices requisite to have a well-functioning society? Can you pick and choose from the good and the bad, or do they all have to be taken together?

He knew he did, thanks to some people having hot sisters.

"Today I'd like to have a discussion about last week's class, where I taught you about Aikido ♥. I noticed that quite a few of you seemed quite eager to learn this method of self-defense, so I have a feeling I know where the conversation will go, but still ♥. You know what they say about assumptions ♥. Things like Aikido have its roots in the non-agression principle of pacifism. While nonviolence rejects the use of violence, non-aggression rejects the use of aggression ♥.

Or are there exceptions, as just remaining passive in the face of violence only propagate the violence ♥? Is there a happy medium? What did you, personally, think of the self-defense philosophy of Aikido and how it applies to your own perceptions of pacifism so far?

"Let's discuss ♥!"

As the students headed to class, they would find a note on the door, clearly from their teacher by the liberal use of hearts scattered across the pink flowery paper:

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Please meet me in the gymnasium, little ducklings!
I hope you're feeling limber!
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Once there in the gym... )

Shunsui smiled again, bobbing his head in a nod. "So let us think about these things as I'll teach you a few more Aikido moves, and then I would like you to pair up and practise with each other. Remember, we are just diverting energy and the point is to avoiding harming the other person, even if they may intend to harm you ♥. Please ask any questions you may have, and allow me to demonstrate more should you feel you need a bit more guidance on the moves ♥."

Guess who has two thumbs and spent all weekend in a drunken stupor thinking he was having an affair with the Queen of France?

THIS GUY!

So Shunsui had no sympathy for your plight of the weekend and, besides, even if he had known about it, if you had a child, it meant you probably had sex, so good job!

"Welcome back, my little ducklings ♥!" Shunsui greeted them over his cocoa. "Hopefully, you've had a chance to at the very least look over the play given to you last week so that we can discuss it a bit more directly.

"You got the introduction to it last week, so I'll skip all that and get to the questions. How did you like it, as a literary piece or otherwise? What did you feel Aristophanes was trying to say in this comedic venture, if anything? Do you feel that it's a good example for pacifists to turn to, or do you suppose pacifists who cite it are just trying too hard to see what they'd like to see in this work of fiction? It's also considered a feminist tract; do you see that, too? Do you approve of the title character's strategy in getting the soldiers to peace, or does it tread on other moral questions that should be in consideration as well? Is peace something that should be achieved by any means necessary, or is war sometimes better than peace? Are there any other questions I've forgetting? Is it really just a piece of comedic junk just for giggles and not at all worthy of all this discussion in the first place?

"Let's begin, shall we?"

[[ here comes is the OCD! ]]

When the students came into their classroom today, they'd find a text sitting beside their mugs of cocoa. "My duckings ♥," Shunsui said with a pleased smile once everyone got settled, "I have quite a treat for you today ♥! Today, we are going to be discussing one of my favourite pieces of literature, besides, of course, my own book ♥. Written by a very smart and clever Greek by the name of Aristophanes, this play is a political satire against the Peloponnesian War of Ancient Greece, where the illustrious woman of the play's title comes up with a most intriguing solution to peace: she rallies up the women of the Grecian world to form a pact to finally bring an end to the war by withholding sex. Devastating, I know ♥! But incredibly effective; as the play itself points out, a man cannot concentrate on swinging his sword when his other sword needs swinging ♥.

"It's a classic example of the 'make love, not war' philosophy that had such vital life in the 1960s ♥. It was the Vietnam War rather than the Peloponnesian War, then, and it was an actual movement instead of a parody play designed to make a point, but the idea is the same: it is much better to offer our fellow brothers and sisters love rather than war ♥.

"Naturally, thought the play is short, I cannot expect for you to all have it read by the end of the class and still have time to discuss it, so I have given you each a copy to take home and read over the week. We will discuss the idea of love over war today, and then again next week after you've had a chance to read through the text and see if it manages to influence your opinion any ♥. The war is a senseless waste of time, money, and resources, when peaceful times are spent building the nation; wars not only break the nation, but it also disturbs families and relationships.

Or is any means of achieving peace acceptable means ♥?

"'We love peace, but not peace at any price,' says Douglas Jerrold, and Marvin Gaye, another personal favourite, informs us that 'War is not the answer, because only love can conquer hate.' But where do you stand on the place of love in war ♥?"

Hot chocolate and comfy pillows to sit on in the middle of the room with a teacher beaming peacefully at his students? Must be Tuesday!

"Hello, little ducklings ♥," Shunsui greeted the students with his usual warmth. "I hope you enjoyed last weeks activities ♥! If any of you felt inspired to continue your new hobby outside of class, I should love to hear about it ♥. But, today, I figured we would have a discussion, about the very fundamentals of what we are talking about ♥. We dove right in with Jainaism and Martin Luther King, Jr., which means we have yet to actually define peace. Pacifism itself is an opposition to war or violence. Is that essentially the crux of the meaning of peace? Or is there something more to it? Let's explore ♥.

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. -Mother Theresa )

"In general, these are very large topics, but it is important to consider them and look at them if we are to embrace the art of pacifism and achieve peace, be it in our personal worlds or in the wider world around us ♥. This has also been an extremely quick overview, which much left out, but that is where you all come in ♥.

"Good afternoon, ducklings ♥!" The classroom was in its usual state of desks pushed back to make room for a comfy circle in the middle with the requisite hot cocoa, but there were also several other boxes scattered around, and Shunsui had in front of him a pile of paper with something that looked like a list.

"So far in this class, we have had the opportunity to discuss two great ways of pacifism and so today will be more activity-based ♥. Because it is one thing to be able to know a bunch of rambling thoughts and philosophy and an entirely different thing to put some of these believes into motion ♥. Now, we're starting very very simply today, because one of the best ways to help live a life of nonviolence and pacifism is to have a nonviolent hobby ♥, preferably something that you can channel any aggressive energy into and manage to create something beautiful in the end ♥. That way, you are contributing a piece of art in the world rather than something of hate and anger ♥. I'm sure you can all guess what my hobby is ♥!"

If you were thinking drinking or sleeping or womanizing, you were wrong.

"Writing ♥!" Shunsui announced proudly. "I am the author of two published books, you know, and I have written a third ♥. To me, writing is like releasing the poetry of the soul onto paper so you can share it with others ♥. One could maintain a zen garden, or knitting is increasingly popular. Make scarves, not war ♥!"

Here Shunsui chuckled, and started to pass around the papers.

"On these papers is list of various hobbies to give you some inspiration ♥.

[[ and here comes the ocd has arrived! ]]
[identity profile] sake-shinigami.livejournal.com
"Ahh, thank you to all my little ducklings who braved the cold to be here again this week ♥!" Shunsui said with a bright smile at all his students who had extra large mugs of cocoa today in their little circle. "Some of you may have been aware, and I'm sure some of you didn't, but yesterday was a day reserved to honour a very important man in the modern history of pacifism, and we will talk about that man today ♥. His name was Martin Luther King, Jr., and he inspired an entire nation, as well as the world, to achieve civil rights through nonviolence and nonviolent protest ♥. King himself was inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, who will will be discussing much later ♥."

I Have a Dream. )

"So let's take one last good swig of hot cocoa to warm us up, and we'll bundle up and head out ♥! We have quite the march ahead of us with the weather out there, and that in itself will be a testament to our hardships ♥. I doubt they had to deal with blizzards like this in Alabama ♥!"

[[ please wait for the OCD is up! ]]
[identity profile] sake-shinigami.livejournal.com
"Welcome back, my little ducklings ♥," Shunsui already had the desks moved away from the centre of the room, and was sitting there ready for them to settle into their circle. Mugs of hot cocoa, this time with slowly melting little mini-marshmallows, were already waiting for them as well. "Today, I wish to speak with you all about Mahavira ♥, ancient reformer of the Jainism religion, which prescribes its followers to take the path of nonviolence toward all living beings ♥. He was born as Prince Vardhaman in a place called Kundgraam ♥. Even in the womb, it is said, he brought wealth and prosperity to his kingdom, like the abundant bloom of beautiful flowers in the springtime ♥. He did not let his status as a prince allow him to fall into the spoils of royalty and privilege, adopting practises of meditation and self-contemplation even at a young age ♥.

Except maybe clothing... )

"One may claim, then, that a pacifism of the Jaina vein is a pacifist through the utmost awareness of his or her surroundings ♥. They are constantly vigilant on what actions might cause violence in even the slightest ways, and strive to avoid them. But enough talk from me ♥. It is now your turn ♥. Is the Jaina concept of Ahimsa a realistic or reachable goal? In which ways would you say it succeeds or fails ♥? No wrong answer, no strict order, just a discussion to consider all the variety of opinions that are sure to exist with such an ecclectic group ♥. Who wants to start ♥?"

When the students got to the classroom for the Art of Pacifism, they would not find their teacher there. In fact, after five minutes, there was still no teacher. Ten minutes then rolled around, and still no sign of a single person of an authoritative teacherly status. And then fifteen...

...the clock was getting incredibly close to twenty minutes into the hour... )

When they were all finished with introductions, Shunsui feeling quite comfortable, thanked them all and informed them that they could leave if they wanted to, or, if they felt so inclined and because it was the last class of the day, they could hang around with each other and discuss pacifism more. Or anything else, really. He even had some hot cocoa (since he couldn’t exactly serve them sake) for anyone who’d like to stay. “But one thing if you do leave ♥,” he said. “Your homework is, in at least one occasion, if someone commits an act of violence against you, to not respond with violence in kind ♥. Take the path of nonviolence, and then share the experience with the class for discussion ♥ And if no one commits an act of violence against you, consider yourself quite lucky ♥!”
