When the students walked into the classroom today, they'd probably note the single sheet of looseleaf paper sitting on each desk, yes.

"Final exam day," Algren said, standing at the front of the room with his arms crossed over his chest. "And, instead of the multiple-choice like we had on the midterm, today we're going to ask you just one question. Please, answer in essay format, to the best of your ability."

It was possible that he simply didn't trust Jim with the photocopier enough to risk another quiz like that last one again.

It was a wonderful quiz, thank you.

"Explain your feelings on how the social concept of sex has changed from the past until whatever point in time you're at at the moment. Yes, that does include the future," Jim added dryly.

"Please, cite any valid examples that you might remember from class," Algren added, because he knew that there were some of those in there somewhere, "or feel free to mention things that you might be aware of through your own experiences or research."

Yes, their research of sex. They were teenagers. Algren was going to assume that it had to have happened with at least a few of them, somewhere down the road.

Algren was standing at the front of the class today, eyeing Jim out of the corner of his eye, warily. They were tantalizingly close to the end of the semester, now. And it seemed as though they were getting on into material that had some sort of educational merit, and he couldn't for the life of him figure out if this was all too good to be true, or if he was smiling and nodding and going on with teaching what he could only suppose had to be fact.

Somebody hadn't gotten over the giant ear thing from last class, no.

"Today," he said, looking to the students, "we're going to continue on the topic that we had begun last week, discussing the sexual customs of other, nonhuman races." Races? Species? Algren had no clue, here. "We've arranged for this lesson to come from far more reliable sources than we-" Jim, "-could possibly provide simply from textbooks and notes."

Jim was perfectly knowledgeable! But when you had students who knew more...

You couldn't pass that up.

"So please be polite and courteous to your classmates and don't speak until they've finished with their speechs, alright?"

Today the ball was in Jim's court on the class subject. And poor, poor Nathan just had to follow the notes he was given. God help everyone involved.

"Today we'll be talking about sex in terms of other species. The future for most of you and the present for myself and---a few others." Right. Awkward to think about Spock anywhere near sex. What Uhura was thinking--nevermind that now. "The Ferengi are a humanoid race," He continued, passing out a sheet on that. "That consider commerce a form of government and morality unto itself."

Algren stared at his notes. Stared at them. And then stared at Jim. And refrained from asking if this was real, or if Jim had made this up and had handed him this information on some so-called alien race to make him look like an idiot in front of the class.

And yet there he went, clearing his throat and reading the notes regardless. If he was going to look like an idiot, he was going to do so with confidence.

"Their obsession over wealth, which usually comes in a form of money they know as 'latinum,' has had a somewhat notable effect on the way their society has evolved into what it is... today?" A beat. "Or what it will be." Something like that. "Males are the dominant gender of this species, which makes females into... Well, into an asset, I suppose. Property. Marriage, for example, is more a business contract than lawfully wedded bliss, or whatever people consider it to be nowadays. Marriage doesn't last, it's a lease, signed between the bride's father and the groom for a set period of time and a set fee. The fee is due to be paid when the bride gives birth to a son."

There were many reasons why they never joined the Federation.

"Traditionally, the hammer represents sexual prowess for the Ferengi," Jim continued, sticking to the subject at hand. "Unlike human males, one of the more obvious methods of--" He smirked. "--stimulation is massaging the the lobes of their ears. Sometimes performed in public to demonstrate how successful their business is to be able to afford such services on a whim."

Jim leaned against the desk, looking out at the class. "We would like you to discuss how--if you have knowledge of them--non-human races approach gender equality and sexuality. If not, please use the Ferengi as an example. We will discuss more species later on."

Algren flipped through his notes again. Frowned at them, and then shrugged, looking up at the class.

"You heard the man. Get to it."

"Before any of you gets it into your heads that today's class is going to be an easy one," Algren said, arms over his chest as the students filed into the room, "think again. Just because we're leading up to a holiday doesn't mean that we'll be any less academic than we are in other lessons."

Stop laughing. He's trying, here.

"And so I want you all to think long and hard about how Columbus probably brought syphilis back with him to Europe from the New World while you watch this movie. It puts this ridiculous holiday into perspective."

Right, Nathan. You keep telling yourself that.

"Even though Thanksgiving is celebrating the first successful colony in America," Jim added, shooting Nathan an amused look as he pushed in the movie into the tape player--how quaint was that? "But nevermind that now."

"It's a holiday week," Algren sighed. "Try not to think too hard about how in the world a beagle setting a ping-pong table for dinner is supposed to relate to the history of sex, and I'll let you all get away with just one handout about the idiot who thought he was in India. If you're interested."

Look, he didn't care what the holiday was about. He was still well steeped in denial about his priorities in this particular classroom.

"Today we'll be talking about prostitution in the late 20th century and the early 21st century," Jim said, having nothing to torment his co-worker with this week, sadly. If only the vegetables had waited until this week to attack, he could have done something. "There are several different types involved from the increase in the sex tourism industry to the subject of our discussion today the, if I do say so myself, rather stereotypical escort to pay for school bills."

You just didn't see that outside of movies, you know.

"For those of you not in the know, for whatever reason," Algren said, a wry sort of smile toying at the corners of his lips, "prostitution is the act of engaging in sexual acts for money. On the odd-chance that any of you are from some world where such a thing doesn't exist." He doubted it. In fact, it was entirely possible that he just enjoyed re-stating the obvious so that he could pretend he was actually teaching something, here. "It's a practise that goes back just as far as sex and money, and participated in by both females and males, though it's been met with varying degrees of acceptance throughout different eras and cultures. Nowadays, it seems more or less frowned upon... but as we saw when we covered Vegas," and the students should be thankful that he was not making the mandatory reference to bees again, "it is often seen as a given, regardless."

"So. We have the story of Brooke Magnanti who is the real person behind a series of books and then television program depicting her life as she worked as a high priced escort in order to pay her way through a doctorate program. Now, this story is in no way typical for the life of any person in the profession. Considering the numbers of sexually transmitted diseases--" Oh, Jim knew them all. Thank you, Bones. "--and the possibility of being murdered by a client, I'd say you shouldn't start changing your future plans to include prostitution."

"Your assignment today is simple enough," Algren noted, trying not to look too triumphant that they'd gotten through a lecture without him turning shades of red and hiding behind his own hand. "Read the handout, discuss your thoughts on Ms. Magnanti's reveal, and then share your own thoughts, or better still, your own society's views on prostitution with the class. Civilly."

Today there was a movie already set up and waiting for the class to watch. It was educational.

Really.

Educational.

"Today we'll be discussing the value placed on virginity in the beginning of the 21st century." IE: Now. "Is it more important or less depending on age, gender or where you come from?" Jim asked, arms crossed over his chest as he leaned against the desk.

"Watch the movie," Algren added, motioning to the television, which he clearly didn't trust in the least, as he was keeping clear of it and letting Jim handle the remote control today. "And when the movie is through, discuss how the views of modern society have affected how people value, or possibly devalue, the concept of virginity."

Jim was steadfastly ignoring the noise of what might have been a tomato hurling itself at the window in an attempt to get in and savage them all with it's tomato-y wrath. "And try keep things civil," He added, pushing play.

When the students filed into the Danger Shop for class today, they'd probably notice that the setup seemed to be a pretty far stretch away from the typical classroom setup, and it was also stunningly modern, as well. Or, at least, as modern as rows upon rows of slot machines, poker tables, and other assorted casino-related nonsense ever really got. Hyper-modern? Possibly just noisy and somewhat surreal?

Pressing on into more modern views! )

"As most of you know, Halloween is this weekend and we thought we would take a break and discuss the early 21st century's attitude on costuming for the holiday," Jim said, relaxed as could be with the topic. "Right, Nathan?"

Algren's reply was something not unlike a groan. He was fairly certain that he already had some vague notion as to where this was leading. And yet, still he soldiered bravely onward.

Class! )

As soon as class arrived today, Jim was there to pass out an exam. Yes, they'd only just come back from a vacation, but class waited for no man.

Plus, he needed to get them passed out before Nathan noticed the questions.

Algren was going to be very upset when he realized that trusting Jim to work the photocopier was very, very risky business indeed.

"You'll be writing your midterm today," he said, while Jim passed them around. "You'll get the entire period to write them, and you may leave when you're finished. Please, leave them on our desk as you exit the room."

Test time! )

When the students filed into the classroom today, they might notice that Algren didn't look... entirely uncomfortable as he glanced at his notes on today's subject matter. Either this was because he was hell-bent on not letting it seem as though Jim was getting to him, or else it was the fact that he had a passing awareness about this one even before he'd learned he was to teach this class.

Someday, Algren would learn that it was a good idea to review so-called 'educational viewing material' before letting Jim play it for the class. Yes indeed.

Today was not that day.

But it made Jim happy, at least. And that's all that matters.

"So, today we'll be taking a little break from class to watch a movie. Think of it as the modern take on sexual mores," Jim said, smiling far too much for this to bode well for Nathan.

Algren eyed Jim warily. He didn't trust that smile. At all.

"All I know is that it's been deemed educational by a certain colleague of mine who shall remain unnamed." A beat. "So, if it isn't, don't blame this one on me."

Jim just rolled his eyes. "It's a movie day, no one is going to blame anyone. Just start the movie."

Algren hesitated a moment, partly because he was still highly wary, and partly because he wouldn't know what to do with a DVD menu screen if his life depended on it. But, after a bit of wrestling and some cranky glowering at the remote, he managed to locate the "OK" button and on came the educational movie of choice. Canadian Pie.

Jim was a dead man.

You know, you'd think Nathan would have learned by now not to allow Jim to come up with the topics for class.

Oh well!

It was time for class, it seemed.

"Good morning class. Today we'll be learning about the theories of sex from Taoist China. More specifically between the Han and Tang dynasties. The idea of sex as a spiritual practice was called HeQi, or 'Joining energy' for anyone not aware of the translation," Jim drawled, sprawled against a desk. Like you do.

Cut for NWS Lecture. )

When the students filed into the classroom today, they might notice that one of their teachers had his face buried in one hand. It was entirely possible that this particular teacher was not going to remove his hand from his face for some time. Why?

Because he was Algren. )

The day after a holiday and one can only hope that people aren't hungover from celebrating. Well, if they were American. And from a time period that Labor Day is celebrated.

Look, it was an excuse for a day off for a lot of people. That's good enough for a party most of the time.

Class held two hot teachers when everyone arrived. One was perfectly at ease with the subject matter, the other...

Not so much.

"Welcome to Sex Through The Ages, class," Jim said, far too happy with it all. Maybe to make up for his co-teacher's attitude.

Algren's attitude was just fine. )
