Yeah, it was definitely still hot out, but turned out to be better than Gladio expected from the forecast, so they were definitely back in the preserve this week. Which was why everyone was also going to be getting a quick lecture on how to keep cool when it's hot while camping, and, since he liked you all so much, not only did the packs include plenty of water (and water packs!), but also some different portable fans to help with everything, too.

Look, the class was written earlier this week when the forecast said it was going to be a lot hotter, and the person who wrote it is having a day, so we're just going to run with it, shush.

"The last thing I want you guys to take away from this class," he said with a grin, "is just a bad case of heatstroke. But keeping cool isn't the only thing we're hopefully doing today, but I'll explain more once we're at the campsite. Until then, take a few moments, protect yourself against the heat and the sun, and we'll get heading out as soon as everyone's ready."

In a shocking turn of events, no doubt, the class had been notified and informed to meet in the Danger Shop this week. Which meant that the landscape was looking a little different, but Gladio was still waiting with the usual hiking packs. It was also night time, with a whole sky full of stars.

"Now," Gladio said, "one aspect of camping that's a little hard to do during our usual class time is the whole settling in around a fire before turning in for the night, telling stories and maybe singing campfire songs and enjoying the stars." And, of course, there was a little extra softness there in his grin at that. Anytime you get these Insomnia boys talking about stars and sunrises, really... "So I brought the night to us. Your packs have flashlights and lights you can clip onto your shirts for visibility, and you see that faint blue smoke rising up out of the trees? That's our destination. So gear up, head out, and I'll lead the way. When we get there, I'm hoping we can all share some good stories or campfire songs, so think about a few you might have while we hike, and we'll go from there."

"We're actually not going to be heading into the preserve like usual today," Gladio admitted with an apologetic smile, especially since it was pretty clear that their little walk in the woods to the campsite was pretty big highlight of the class so far, "but we will be gearing up and taking a bit of a walk all the same. You'll notice," he gestured toward the waiting packs, "that today's gear is also a little bit different, because today, we're going to start going into some various camp-adjacent activities, and it's been a good week for fishing, so that's what we're going to focus on today."

He paused, for the expected groan he'd be hearing from Prompto at this news (or from anyone else, for that matter), and grinned faintly.

"We'll go into it more when we get on location," he said, "but, in the meantime, grab a pack, and we'll hike our way on over to Selkie Lake and start casting lines."

At the meeting spot outside the preserve, the class would find Gladio there waiting, with packs already prepared, and with Ignis there standing beside him, and as everyone gathered, he greeted them with a grin.

"Hey, guys," he said, and then hitched a thumb toward his companion, "I know you all know Iggy here at least a little, if not more, so you've probably figured out just by him being here what today's lesson is going to be focusing on: camp food. So I hope you're hungry, but, if not, maybe the hike to the campsite'll get that appetite going. When we get there, Igs is going to show you a few cool cooking techniques for camping and hopefully you'll have a few of your own you can share, too. But let's save that for when we get there. Grab a pack and let's get moving."

Ahhh, nothing like a nice outdoorsy class right in the smack dab middle of the day in summer to really catch the most of the heat and humidity that the eastern seaboard had to offer! But, of course, Gladio was living for it, and he was ready to meet the class at the edge of the preserve. His usual grin might have been a little more reserved out of deference for anyone who may have decided to come to class despite discovering why too much alcohol was full of regrets the next morning (not to name any names or anything, though, of course), and he gestured at all the stuff he had at his feet today.

"Before we head up to the campsite today," he announced, "we're going to be taking a moment to talk about camp first aid and putting together first aid kits to bring with us. Even if you're just taking a nice casual little camping trip out for a night or a weekend, anything can happen out there, so you've got to be prepared. We'll also talk about some of the more common injuries you might encounter and what to do about them, and once we're all kitted up and ready, we'll head on out."

Anyone who knew Gladio would know that these camping classes were among some of his favorite to teach, and anyone who'd taken one of those classes with him before would know to meet just outside the preserve on a day like today. Anyone who hadn't would have at least received the class email or perhaps squirrel-delivered note to let them know the deal, and there, they would find their hulking instructor eager and raring to go with a broad grin on his face.

And, of course, camping packs at his feet.

"Hey, guys," he said. "You ready to get camping? Now, I know some of you," all of them, really, in one way or another, "have taken my Wilderness Survival classes, which are pretty intense, so this class is probably going to be a breeze for you. This one's all about enjoying the nicer, recreational side of camping, and just having a good time in the woods, you know? We're gonna start out nice and simple, though. Grab a pack, and we'll hit the dusty trail to take us out to our campsite, and there, we're gonna work on pitching tents and starting campfires, and once we've got that taken care of, we'll roast some dogs...hot dogs," he corrected, with that strangled sound out of Prompto, "and do our introductions. Pretty straightforward, right? So take a moment, get a little limber for the hike, and let's get moving."

It was looking like the forecast called for it to be pretty rainy and even a little stormy today, which, if you asked Gladio, would be a great challenge for his camping class. However, it was the last class, and he'd been in a pretty good and generous mood lately, so, instead, he decided to work out something a little different, and instead of meeting at the preserve that day, he was going to have everyone meet at Portalocity.

News that he was sure all of his students would have received with a sigh of relief.

"Alright, guys," he greeted them with a nod, and gestured toward the packs still waiting for them, because they weren't getting off that easy, "for our last meeting together, we're going to change the scenery up a little and head up to Voyageurs National Park, which promotes a variety of campsite options, all with waterfront access. So...very scenic, very beginner-friendly, very good spot to just sort of offer some of the best camping has to offer. We're going to keep it real simple today, and just hike up to a good spot, set up camp, and enjoy some nature, enjoy some company, and, of course, some s'mores and hot dogs. We got a boat out there, too, if anyone wants to enjoy the water while we're there, as well."

Or even fishing, so long as you don't drag Gladio with you.

"Grab a pack, and let's go camping!"

Even though he was pretty sure some of his campers weren't going to share the sentiments, Gladio could not be happier that the forecast that morning called for rain and that there was a good sprinkling of it because I said so by the time for getting class started. He grinned all too eagerly as he tossed a poncho over to anyone who didn't already show up kitted in rain gear--he himself was going entirely without--and then hitched up his pack.

"Finally," he said, "we've got some rain, which means today, we're going to go over some essentials for camping in the rain, but, of course, we've got to get to our campsite first, so you know the drill. Grab some gear, try to stay dry, and let's hit the trail."

While the weather forecast seemed to be giving this class its first less than perfect day so far this session, Gladio would still be sticking to his original plans for this week, and, well, if it rained while they were out there, that would just be a real solid true-to-life camping experience. Either way, everyone would have been told to meet over by Selkie Lake that morning rather than the usual spot by the preserve, and, if they hadn't had ideas on what they were doing today yet, the rowboats and fishing gear waiting for them along with their instructor definitely would.

"Sometimes," Gladio started with a grin, "when you go camping, you're lucky enough to do be doing it by a viable body of water, which means at least two time-honored camping activities that we'll be doing today: rowing and fishing. So sorry if any of you are afraid of water, but, well, could be a good time to conquer that fear if you are, or you can skip the rowing and just work on the fishing from the shore. But we'll take some time to go over good rowing technique, after we touch up on exactly how to fish and the gear you'll need. So any expert rowers or anglers among us right now, bear with me while we go over it, and then we'll get started."

Gladio had been very busy that morning, laying the groundwork for today's class, so by the time he met everyone at the edge of the preserve as usual, he was pretty excited and met them with a faintly proud grin.

"Hey, guys," he said, nodding his greeting. "Hope you all brought some good hiking shoes today, because we're going to be doing a lot of walking today. As far as camping activities go, you really can't get much more basic than hiking, and while anyone can pretty much follow a trail, there are plenty of opportunities for those who want to go a little off the beaten path and do a little bit more exploring. Things like orienteering or geocaching or treasure hunting gives you the opportunity to get out into the wilderness with a particular goal in mind. Birdwatching and wildlife spotting can fall into those categories as well.

"Unfortunately," he huffed with amusement, "they can also be pretty good ways of getting lost. Which is why today, we're going to be focusing on learning some wilderness navigational skills to help you out when you're out in the woods, and then we're going to put those skills to use with a bit of a woodland scavenger hunt."

He held up a few rolled up maps and lists and grinned.

"You can decided to team up and work together or go it alone if you're feeling pretty confident and independent," he said, "but I've got some different colored flags hidden in various spots throughout the preserve for you to find. You've got some maps, compasses, and some hints to guide you along the way, and the goal is to find as many of them before the end of class as you can. And I'll let whoever ends up with the most have a say in what camping activity we embark in next week. How's that sound?

"But, before we get into that...let's try to not get lost, yeah? Anyone here not familiar with a compass...?"

Good news, everyone! Instead of a bunch of gear and firewood to haul through the preserve that day, you'd all just find a note at the meeting spot letting you know that Gladio was already out at the campsite waiting for you. So all you needed to do this week was hike out there, and, once arrived, you'd find all the provisions and fire started and Gladio nodding in greeting as they all arrived.

"Glad to see you all presumably made it without getting eaten by any wildlife," he greeted with a grin. "Come on, gather around, have a seat, all that good stuff. Snacks and drinks in the coolers, so help yourself. I figured, last week, we talked about building fires and campfire snacks, and so this week might be a good one to cover campfire activities.

"Well," he laughed a little, "most campfire activities tend to just be a lot of talking, a little bit of winding down with your buddies after a long day of travel or hiking, hunting or fishing, or whatever else you're doing while out in the great outdoors. So, a lot of times, there's just campfire stories and campfire songs. Usually, at this point, it would be getting dark, and so scary stories are pretty popular, but there's others, as well. So, today, that's what we're focusing on. Just sharing stories or songs you may know from your own experiences with camping or other similar situations where you just sort of...enjoy company by the fire. You got some good stories or favorite songs? Share 'em with the class. And, if not, maybe you'll pick up a few.

"Barring that, there are games a lot of people play around a campfire, so we'll also have a stab at a nice, classroom-friendly one called I Went to Market, but I'll get into that a little more once everyone's settled."
