"Well, today is our last class," Jon said. "I don't think we've covered nearly everything, but hopefully it will help a bit at least. Still, there's so much left that I thought today we could do a question and answer session. Ask whatever you like, and I'll do my best to answer it. And please remember that I'm always available to answer whatever might come up, and I suspect most people on the island will be, as well."

He nodded and stood awkwardly waiting for questions.

Today class met in the Danger Shop, which looked like a really large parking lot. Jon had tried to make it nicer, but that mostly just meant there were occasional trees and flower beds sticking up in places.

"Today, we're discussing modern transportation," Jon announced. "There are all sorts." He waved at various things as he mentioned them. "For more pedestrian options, there are roller skates - four wheels or inline, skateboards, and scooters, which can be entirely push-powered or have motors to help them along. Going up from there, there are bicycles - those are powered by you pedaling them - and motorcycles, which as the name suggests have motors. They can range from slightly larger than bicycles to utterly ridiculous.

"Then there are automobiles, which are fairly ubiquitous off the island. There are all sorts; here I've replicated something like the one the island gave me a few years ago, which is fairly normal and low-end, and one of the others you'll see in the lot at the end of the causeway, which is ridiculously luxurious." He made a moue of distaste at the Bentley.

"Past that, there are larger vehicles like busses," and yes it was a proper London bus; he'd barely seen any US types, "and lorries and things that are mostly for cargo hauling. Then there are trains, though not as many of those in our current country as there should be. In some cities, you'll see underground ones - the London Tube is down those stairs if you'd like to take a look, though I haven't had this thing build any other stations. For larger distances, there are aeroplanes, but I thought we'd stick with ground transportation for now."

He eyed the students and sighed. "I'll show you the basics of the individual transports, and you can try them out. Or you can ride on the mass transport options. At least nobody can get hurt in here."

Today, Jon looked a little worse for wear. Well, to be fair, he always did. But today he looked even worse.

That was what happened when an alternate you drank himself blind and you were left with the hangover.

"Afternoon," Jon murmured. "I'm keeping the lights low because we're doing a movie day." Sure, that was why.

"Movies, films, moving pictures - they're a way of telling stories, like plays. There's a lot of things they can show that aren't real. Never believe everything you see. They also can feed into popular culture, and you may find people quoting from them or referring to them.

"Today we're watching a film. It's one a lot of people know. Now you'll know it, too."

He put on Space Battles.

Today class was in a regular classroom, albeit with a large screen at the front for him to show things on.

"Today," Jon announced, "we're going to briefly cover sport." He grimaced. "I'm not much of a follower myself, but for many people it's an important element of life." For some reason.

"In the United States, one of the major sports is called football." He showed some footage as he spoke. "The rest of the world refers to this as American Football, because 'football' elsewhere is this." He showed different footage. "Because you play it with your feet, which at least makes sense. American football is more similar to rugby. Sort of. In all of these sports, there is a ball, and two teams, and each team has to get the ball into the other team's net or end zone. That seems to be how a lot of team sports work."

There was different footage now. "Basketball is another US sport that follows this rule, although the field - called a court - is much smaller. As are the nets."

He changed the footage yet again. "One exception to the format is another major sport in the US, baseball. In this sport, one team stays on the field, and the other hits a ball and then tries to make it around these bases, while the first team tries to prevent them from doing so.

"All of these sports have a lot of fans. That is, people who enjoy them, cheer for the team from their city or a city they identify with, and follow their exploits. Often people will get together and have parties while watching the games, or travel to view them in person."

The screen split to show four different things at once: swimming, gymnastics, fencing, and surfing. "Right now, something called the Olympics is going on. It's based somewhat on an old Greek tradition and was revived last century. Nations all over the world - at least the ones that can afford it - send athletes to one location to compete in sports. Right now it's in France. Mostly. It's meant to be every four years, though lately there have been some exceptions, and the summer and winter games are split so there's really games every two years. Anyway, there are a lot of different sports going on, and whichever individual or team wins or comes in second or third is awarded a medal. It's all very competitive."

He frowned slightly at the screen before turning back to the class. "If you have any questions about any of the sports I've mentioned or others I haven't, please let me know, and I will do my best to answer them."

Jon came into the classroom today with a large cardboard box, which he set on the desk at the front.

"Good afternoon. Today we'll be jumping to something much more complex, yet fairly important in daily life at this time." Though possibly not quite as important as Summer believed.

He took his own out of his pocket. "This is a mobile. Or I suppose around here it's mostly called a phone. A cellular telephone. That means it's designed to be a mode of voice communication you can take nearly anywhere with you. It uses electricity to fill its batteries, so you plug it in until the indicator here shows it's at one hundred percent, and then you can unplug it and bring it with you.

"You can use it for its original intent, which is calling others, by going here. The image on this button is designed to look like an old-fashioned telephone handset. From here, each telephone has a number, and if you type in that number, it will ring that telephone." He dialed a number and one of the phones in the box rang. He took a moment to fish it out. "Then the person on the other end presses the green button to answer, and you can talk."

He paused for a moment. "But, erm. That's actually their original purpose, but many people no longer use it. You can also type messages to other people, look up all kinds of information you might need, engage in social media, which is rather like being at a party or posting bills, or...or diving into shark-infested waters, honestly. And you can also play games. So today, I'll pass this around, and you can take a phone if you don't already have one, and we'll go through a few of these things. And after class, if you have any further questions, Summer at the Turtle and Canary or Caritas is an excellent resource. As well as providing these phones, she uses hers very frequently for many different things."

Because Jon mostly texted people and watched cat videos.

Jon was...out of sorts today. The weekend had been interesting, to say the least.

But he was here, he was determined to get through this, and he was at his stiff and Oxford professorial best as a consequence.

"Welcome to Daily Modern Life," he began once everyone was presumably here. "This is a course designed to acquaint those of you from different times and places with how to do some useful things in this one. The first class is traditionally for introductions, but as we have quite a bit to get through, we'll also be engaging in our first lesson. So if you would all please introduce yourselves with your name and where and when you are from, as well as anything in particular you are interested in learning, we'll get started.

"To begin, I am Jonathan Sims. You may call me Mr. Sims or Jon. I am from Bournemouth, England, by way of London, in more or less the present time."

He nodded to the first person.

Oz had made sure his class all knew to meet him down in the shop room, where a large amount of tools and lumber, as well as three sets of blueprints, awaited them.

"Good morning class, and welcome to your shop final," Oz greeted them, cheerfully. Somehow his tie had gotten lost, fancy that. "Now if you remember last week's class, I told you how you'd be working in groups for your final, working of subsections of a larger project, you know that modern art installation? So that you could get an idea of how large scale projects happen in the real world. So put on your safety gear, and hopefully we'll be able to put everything together by the end of class."

As the class entered, Oz numbered them off by four and flipped a coin, handing them a small bag of candy afterwards.

"Persuasion," Oz began, once all the candy had been distributed. "Someone has something you want, you intend on getting it. Maybe you have something they want, maybe you have something you can make them want, point is, play your cards right and everyone wins, but especially you."

"Now you've all got some candy, there's different kinds, and some of you have more than others. The aim of today's class is to have as much of your preferred candy as you want by the end of the class, using any means that won't land you in detention or jail to get it."

"Have at it, kids."

As each student entered the Danger Shop, Oz numbered them off, handing each of them a basket and a box. The Danger Shop itself was a beautiful, bucolic field, all done in pastels.

"Morning kids," Oz greeted them. "Now it just so happens that we're coming up on Easter, and in the spirit of the holiday we're going to have ourselves a little chocolate egg hunt." And if the class wasn't expecting the other shoe to very quickly drop after that, then Oz hadn't been doing his job.

"But this is a special egg hunt, it's also something of a teamwork exercise, see the eggs are booby trapped." Of course the eggs were booby trapped. "If you don't pick them up while wearing the special gloves that those of you numbered one have, then they'll explode. If you don't pick them up carefully, they'll also explode, won't hurt you, but it'll destroy that delicious chocolate. Now those of you numbered two you might be wondering what you've got."

Oz killed the lights. "Night vision goggles. Find a partner, then go looking for eggs, you'll divvy up what you collect at the end of class."

"Greetings and salutations," Oz said as the class arrived. "I'm sure you're all really for the pop quiz that's worth half your final grade."

He waited a moment to see if he'd managed to put enough fear into them over the semester that they might actually think he was serious. "I'm kidding of course, go, get ready for the dance, have fun," he said, shooing them out of the room.

When Oz's class arrived at the the Danger Shop for today's class, they found themselves in a Dark Room. One with a holographic screen hanging in the air.

Once they'd all arrived, a man appeared on the screen.

"YOU AWAKE TO FIND YOURSELF IN A DARK ROOM," boomed the man. Then several options also appeared on the corners of the screen.

[Go ahead]

Today the Danger Shop was divided into two sections, a dressing room, with racks of clothing and an office set-up. "Job interviews," Oz began. "This is especially important for those of you who have graduation looming, thought maybe less so if your home universe is different in how you get work, but still some of this stuff will come in handy for you kids, trust me."

"The goal of most job interviews isn't to convince them you know how to do the job," he continued. "Hopefully you will have done a good enough job on your resume and cover letters, and writing those is a different skill entirely, that they will already believe this, hence the interview. No, the point of a job interview is to sell yourself as a potential member of the company in question, prove you'll fit in with the office environment, and that your aforementioned C.V.s aren't full of lies."

"So we're going to do mock interviews today, you're going to pick an appropriate outfit, familiarise yourselves with some of the provided advice, then spilt into pairs and take turns roleplaying as interviewer and interviewee."

[go ahead!]

Oz had exactly half the number of limbs this class as he'd had last class. Additionally, the fish tank and Speak & Spell were nowhere in sight. thee were however several tables with boxes on them. As they entered the room, Oz directed each of them to a table.

"Money management," he began. "It's a skill that I'm a big believer in. Not just for my own sake, or to keep myself in the lifestyle I'm accustomed to, but also for the benefit of my employees. So you can get an idea of just how complicated this can get, we're going to play a little game, which I'm hoping at least some of you are familiar with. For those of you who aren't here's a quick explanation of the rules."

After Oz had finished explaining that he continued. "If you want to include house rules you can, but everyone in your group has to agree to them."

"And remember, above all, have fun."

[Away we go]
thefearwasreal: ([animal] octopus)
[personal profile] thefearwasreal
When Oz's class made they way to class today, instead of their teacher, they would have found a disgruntled looking octopus in a fishtank on wheels, with a Speak & Spell attached to the side. Once the class had arrived, a tentacle slipped up and out of the tank to manipulate the Speak & Spell.

<WELL, KIDS, WE WERE GOING TO DO A CLASS ON HOW TO NOT TO FALL FOR SELF-HELP SCAMS BUT ELLIPSIS STUFF HAPPENED>

Pause.

<SO INSTEAD WE'RE GOING TO WATCH A MUSICAL>

<ENJOY>

Oz had sent an email to the class telling them wear clothes that could stand up to some rough handling. As each student entered the Danger Shop, he handed them either a squirt gun or a bucket of brightly coloured water balloons.

Once the entire class had arrived, he began. "Sometimes you need to know how to make the most of what you've got," Oz told them. "You might be in competition with people who have different resources to you, they may be better resources, they may not. But usually? Knowing how to effectively use the resources you have can make all the difference."

"Other times, you just need to know when to cool off." Which would be when he triggered the catapult full of balloons aimed right at the class.

[Done!]
thefearwasreal: (pose: what up my peeps)

Today the Danger Shop was set up as a large ballroom...with a projector screen at one end.

"Morning, kids," Oz greeted them. "Now it occurs to me that one skill that a fair number of you might need in the very near future is dancing. With a partner since none of you look like Billy Idol. So today we're going to have a quick crash course in how to dance with a partner, so pair up, figure out which of you is leading, watch the screen and just do what they do."

[Away we go]
thefearwasreal: (desk: office)

Today the Danger Shop looked suspiciously like Jaye's Theater program, but Oz would deny everything if asked.

"Morning kids," Oz greeted them once they'd finished arriving. "Now I had this whole class planned around fashion emergencies and what to do when you suddenly needed a c-cup and all that, but since it sounds like you had a stressful day yesterday, I thought we'd all just kick back with a relaxing film today."

You could thank him after class.

thefearwasreal: (exp: go team)

Unlike the last two classes, today the Danger Shop was set outdoors. Oz leant against a start line, and a trail was marked leading along a field and into a copse of trees, presumably it looped back at some point, since there was a finish line not too far away from the start.

"Today we're looking at teamwork," Oz said. Which should have been the first warning to anyone who knew how Oz liked to build team spirit. "Using one of the first methods that kids in these parts are likely to come across. The three legged race. For those of you who haven't run a three-legged race before, basically you run side by side in pairs, with your middle legs tied together, leading to the term three-legged, though thanks to numbers there'll be one four-legged team today, but don't worry I've figured all that out for you."

"Now one thing we'll be doing differently to normal is the track. Normally, these kinds of races are run on a fairly short, even track, but I feel you're up to something a bit more challenging." Here came that other shoe, ready to drop. "So our three-legged race is going to be cross-country."

[Gofor it]

Oz's class was once again in the Danger Shop, and he looked mighty pleased with himself today. The Shop resembled a labspace, with opaque drapes covering the equipment on the benches. He also had a cannon by his desk that might have looked awfully familiar to Peter certain members of the class.

Da da duuuun... )

[Away you go]
thefearwasreal: (with: cam - reassuring)

Oz was not alone at the front of the Danger Shop (which today resembled a weird hybrid between a kitchen and a laboratory). With him he had a bald, glasses wearing man in chef whites.

"Hey kids. Now one of the more important life skills we're going to cover in this class is cooking, and while I could easily cover this myself, I figured that something so vital needs an expert to help out, so I'd like you to meet my buddy Heston here. He's not the real version, but he'll do. He's going to take you through a few simple recipies. So pair up and put your aprons on."

[Go for it]
thefearwasreal: (desk: lean)
[personal profile] thefearwasreal
Ever the picture of professionalism, Oz sat with his feet up on the desk reading the latest SkyMall magazine as he waited for his class to finish arriving, there was probably something in there he could use in a future class.

"There you all are," he said when he finally put the magazine down. "Morning all, for those of you I haven't seen before, I'm Oz, and I assure you that any story you may have heard about me are complete exaggerations. Well, maybe not all of them. Anyway, this class is Everyday Skills, and like the description on the sign up forms said I consider this class to be a life skills primer, covering some of the basics that everyone should know, you know, the kind of things that you'll need even after you've graduated, so we'll be covering a range of topics, like cooking, forgery, job interviews, bomb diffusion, sewing and mending, safe-cracking, to name a few."

Oz had a slightly different definition of life skills to most people.

"Now, I'm sure you're all sick of introductions by this point, but one of the most important skills you can have is to make a good first impression, so we're still going to do them, I want your names, classes, and one example of what you think an everyday skill is, whether you have it or not."

"Also I need a TA so if you think you're up for it come and see me after class."

[Have at it.]

Criminology

Here is the study guide for your midterm exam. [it will be an 'essay question', but feel free to study/stress]

To review, in class today I would like you to discuss one thing you have learned in this class so far, and how it either surprised you, or changed your mind in regards to a certain topic. If that is not the case in any aspect, why not?

Death and Dying

Discussion: Your homework was to Choose a death by suicide from Shakespeare's work, and share a short reaction to it. Please do so.

Your midterm exam will be on Wednesday! It will be an in-class essay, in a similar vein to the homework you are turning in. Using what you have learned in class, and moving on to our accidental death chapter, please analyze A Darwin Award Winner or Honourable Mention. You may bring in notes on one 3x5 index card.
