Everyday Skills, Friday 2nd Period

Oz had sent an email to the class telling them wear clothes that could stand up to some rough handling. As each student entered the Danger Shop, he handed them either a squirt gun or a bucket of brightly coloured water balloons.

Once the entire class had arrived, he began. "Sometimes you need to know how to make the most of what you've got," Oz told them. "You might be in competition with people who have different resources to you, they may be better resources, they may not. But usually? Knowing how to effectively use the resources you have can make all the difference."

"Other times, you just need to know when to cool off." Which would be when he triggered the catapult full of balloons aimed right at the class.

[Done!]

Hank was very definitively NOT standing on the X.

The generic "hear the sound of something whistling through the air, look down and realize you're standing on an X, run like crazy" narrative cliché was pretty much a staple of his childhood. After enough times, you start to get an instinct for avoiding these things.

Stephanie . . . yelped and dove into a roll as soon as the water balloons went flying. Didn't stop her from getting soaked, but she came up grinning.

Look, if she had to go to class today, at least it was going to be fun.

Rapunzel hadn't expected anything, so she pretty much just stood there and got completely soaked.

Which prompted a burst of excited giggles.

She spun to whoever was closest to her (hi, Stephanie!) and squealed: "That was fun!"

"It was, wasn't it?" Stephanie shook water out of her hair, sort of like a puppy, and snickered. "Chalk up academic water fights as a totally valid learning experience."

Rapunzel didn't bother shaking her own head. Her hair was up in a braid, but it had still gotten soaked enough that it wasn't even worth trying to dry out at the moment. "What are we supposed to be learning?" she asked with a grin.

Stephanie made an unabashedly comical face and flicked a dripping strand of hair out of her eyes. "I don't know yet, but I'm sure it'll come in handy someday."

"That's a nicely optimistic outlook," Rapunzel decided.

She approved!

Stephanie grinned. "Going out and splashing in the puddles sounds like a lot more fun than staying inside and sighing because it's raining, doesn't it? This is sort of the same thing."

If you stretched the metaphor a bit. Details!

[identity profile] leavingthenest.livejournal.com 2012-02-17 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, that's true!" Rapunzel had never thought about it, really, but Stephanie was right: splashing around in the rain sounded way more fun than just moping around inside.

"I suppose that we should go splash around then, huh?"

Re: Listen to Oz - ES [07]

[identity profile] batwaffles.livejournal.com 2012-02-17 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, splashing around in the rain in Gotham City was generally a bad idea, so the appeal hadn't set in as much until she got to Fandom. But that was where the enthusiasm came from.

Stephanie hoisted her Super Soaker and gave it one showy, cheesy-action-movie-style pump.

"Oh, you betcha, sister."

Rapunzel giggled and hefted a water balloon. It wasn't nearly as impressive a motion, but that was mostly because she almost dropped it in the process.

Oops?

Richie didn't notice anything suspicious. Richie was too busy ogling his classmates.

And after the water hit, Richie was just staring even harder at the girls. Wet shirts were awesome, yeah.

Juliet was looking at her bucket of balloons like they confused her. This was a thing people actually did? Like, when they weren't 10?

You bet!!!

Like right now, when Hank was shooting at her with his water gun and grinning like an idiot.

Oh, ew. Juliet shrieked, ducked, and lobbed a water balloon dead at his forehead.

He'd asked for it. He had ruined her hair.

Hank shrieked, too, and slowly collapsed to the ground, hamming it up. "I'm melting!!! I'm melting!!! Oh, what a world! What a world!"

Then he looked up slyly and fired at her again. "SIKE!!!"

"You" -- balloon -- "completely" -- balloon -- "ruined" -- balloon -- "my hair!"

And that was where Juliet was just going to run out of ammo. Oops.

Hank stood up straight and pumped his Super Soaker menacingly. "I was supposed to, baby."

Ambushes implied something resembling tactics. All Rapunzel had was a big arsenal of water balloons. And she was already soaked from the opening barrage, so she had no fear!

Her aim wasn't especially good, though. It was hard to throw properly when giggling madly.

Richie was patrolling, sort of, near one of the taps. It just seemed like a good spot to be able to shoot people from. Because everyone needed to be wetter, obviously. That would be good.
