A note had been sent around to all the students in both How to Blend In and Courtly Dancing and Defence telling them to meet at the Danger Shop for both the 3rd and 4th periods.

The Danger Shop was set up with racks of costumes again - formal clothes with many, many masks of all different sorts to choose from.

Aly was smiling as she glanced around at the students though her eyes were sharp to pick out injuries or worries from the weekend.  "It's good to see all of you in one piece more or less after the past weekend.  Sadly for you, because we won, you all still have class today," she teased.  "Next time, keep that in mind."

"As I'm sure you've all noticed, we're going to have both classes together today.  For a masquerade ball.  Students learning how to blend in?  I think the mission here is obvious.  Watch the Danger Shop generated attendees and the Courtly Dancing class and remember the rules of disguise and taking on a character.  Courtly Dancing?  Your 'special accessories' are on that table" Aly pointed to a table full of weapons.  "Everything else you've learned - flirting and dancing will come in handy.  Those of you who were in both classes?  You have a head start."

"All of you can mingle, dance, learn what you can from each other or the other attendees and generally have fun.  And before you get dressed, let me just say I've enjoyed having all of you in class these workshops.  If you ever want to stop by, feel free, and I hope to see all you in another class of mine sometime soon."

Everyone in the class had received notice asking them to come to class in formal dress.  If they didn't have formal dress, some would be provided.

And it was.   The group met in the Danger Shop where there were several racks of formal ball gowns, tuxedos, and accessories in all sizes for those who didn't come dressed up.

Aly was waiting in a ball gown by a table of...weapons.  Throwing knives, very small guns, hair pins that were also stilettos, every type of moddable concealable weapon you could think of as well as the holsters and purses and accoutrements to carry them with a formal outfit.

She grinned up at the class.  "Today we're looking more at the defence end of the spectrum.  When you're wearing clothes suitable for a ball, you have to think a bit harder about how you might conceal weapons on your person.  Sometimes it's easy, a small pistol in your purse or stiletto hair pins in your hair, throwing knives under the sleeves of your dress shirt.  Sometimes it's a bit harder - I have all my dresses specially made so I can carry knives under them if necessary as well as providing enough freedom of movement to fight."

"So what I want you to do is to figure out how you can carry three weapons while wearing your formal wear.  Subtly.  Once you do that, try dancing a bit with a partner, see if you can tell where the other person's weapons are, and figure out how you'd draw yours if necessary.  Those of you without a lot of weapons experience?  Don't worry.  It's the Danger Shop, nothing's going to hurt you here.  But in reality, you may not want to slip an unsheathed knife down your bodice or something like that."

"So last week we waltzed," Aly said, just as she finished setting up the video equipment.  "This week, we're going to do something a bit less formal but even more fun and salsa."

She pushed play on the DVD and a series of dances started to play.

Once they were done, Aly demonstrated the basic partnered steps of the salsa, letting the class follow along slowly before clapping her hands and switching on some salsa music.  "Throw your hips into it and move with the music," she said with a grin.  "So go ahead and partner up and give this one a try."

Really, she was just amused to see what some of the members of the class would come up with.

[OOC:  omg, I'm sorry for the lateness on this one!  I got called into work on my day off (yay overtime?) but I am back and around now.]

Aly had taken over the music room for their classes from now on, and she was just setting up the speakers as the students came in.  "Afternoon, guys," she said lightly, turning to face them.  "I hope you're all enjoying our tropical paradise."

"Today we're going to focus on a dance you all need to know if you don't already - the waltz.  It's incredibly easy, even if you have two left feet because it's basically steps on the count of three."

She ran through a quick demonstration of the basic steps, counting out loud.  "Any questions?"  Once they all were answered, Aly nodded, hitting the play button on her music.  "Then grab a partner and try it out.  Try to work with a few different partners if you can - it's good to get used to dancing with all different types."

The class met in the Main Campfire today. At least partially to save Aly the trouble of moving to a new location. "Good to see you all back," she said, grinning as the class assembled. She gave a wink to those who were in the earlier class - Inara, Hinata, Liir, and someone else I'm forgetting - if they were all there, of course "I was worried half of you would drop when you realised you had a new teacher." She didn't look too terribly worried, no.

"Today we're going to talk about something very basic in terms of formal dance," she said. "And that's conversation. For anything, talking - being able to talk yourself into and out of trouble is the first line of defence, and it's no different while dancing. You may have noticed most partnered dances - and even country dances - have slower moments, moments when talking to your partner is not only encouraged but required by etiquette.

"So we're going to discuss how to flirt." Aly grinned. She obviously enjoyed this part. "If you're flirting, and you're not sure your partner's objectives are honourable, the best way to keep them away from you is to control the conversation. It's really the best way to keep out of trouble at all."

Aly may have gotten tl;dr here. Subject close to her heart )

"Any questions? Comments? Concerns? What I'd like for today then is for everyone to pair up with someone they don't know and dance an easy waltz - or any dance today, it's the movement and the talking that matters. While you're dancing, use these guidelines, get to know the other person, don't let your composure down. If you have any problems, you know where to find me. If anyone needs a dance partner, I can do that too."

"Hello everyone," Aly said, making her way into the classroom slightly late.  "You probably were expecting someone else, a man for one thing, but Professor Ambrose has been called back to his home for the term so you have me instead.  My name's Aly for those who don't know me."  She glanced around the room with a smile and measuring look for each of the students."

"I apologise there wasn't a class last week for you all, but I'll be more than happy to make up for that in the coming weeks.  Now I normally teach spying and such so the sneaky aspects of this class definitely appeals to me, but for now, I'd like you all to introduce yourselves - name, age, year, why you took the class and then two things different about you."  Aly grinned.  "And then you can feel free to ask me a question."

She flipped a switch and the music of a jig filled the room.  "After that, feel free to pair up and dance. I'd love to see where you all are."
