"Good morning, class. I hope that the weekend was fun. Mine was great. My ex-wife just had a beautiful baby boy with her husband." Miles pauses. "That's... you know, good for here. The planet needs more over-population, anyway. Squeeze a few more in the cracks." A testy expression flits about his face, vying with more reasonable sensibilities for dominance.

He takes a sip of water. "I'm sorry. However, it does bring us to this week's reading, Poe's A Cask of Amontillado. This is probably one of my favorite short stories of all time, not because it is rich with layers of subtext and meaning like Joyce, but because it is a good story well-told."

"I'm sure we've all had days, weeks, months, even years where things just don't seem to work out. You get divorced. Your novel doesn't get published. Your meticulously planned weekend in wine country is ruined because your best friend can't keep it in his pants. When we hit the bottom, sometimes we just need somebody to blame. Some people blame God. Others blame themselves. Montresor chooses to blame Fortunato."

"The matter at hand in The Cask of Amontillado is not the thousand injuries or the insult that Fortunato had supposedly brought to Montresor. No proof or example is offered, just the fact of their existence. This makes Montresor an unreliable narrator, and heightens the terror of the story. One man, with takes it upon himself to cast judgment on another and bear out a horrible revenge. Being buried alive was one of Poe's greatest fears, and he used it over and over again in his stories. This use is perhaps the most famous, however."

"Today's quiz will be your entire participation grade for the day. Questions 1 and 2 relate to Good Country People and Hunchback of Notre Dame respectively, and are worth 25% each. The final question, relating to Cask, will be worth 50% of the quiz. This is a take-home quiz, so you may choose to turn it in next week when we discuss Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway."

QUIZ )

"In addition to the quiz and Mrs. Dalloway, next week I would like you to turn in which of the works on the final project list you will be writing about, as well as a sentence on what aspect you will be writing about."

Shop Class: [3/27]

As the students enter into the classroom, they'll see that it has been transformed into the now familiar junkyard.

Only thing out of place? Would be the pile of pumpkins sitting on the ground.

"Today's assignment will carry over until Wednesday's class. Today your goal is to build a device that will hurl a pumpkin at a target. Your will be graded not only on the accuracy of your device but also distance. Today you will build your device, on Wednesday we will put it through its paces."

"Okay, guys, I've been noticing the occasional absence, so we're going to have a review period covering all prior class subjects. So, ask any questions you've got."

OOC: My focus today has to be on RL and getting two days' worth of work made up while not falling behind on today's work, so slowplay is the order here. But I'll be around, during my lunch break, if nothing else. Also, wait for the OCD threads, OMG! They're up!

Ms. Sidle enters the classroom, looking glowy tired and strangely complacent.

"Good morning, everyone. Like I told you last week, your final exams are today. And I have enjoyed my time teaching you all. I hope you've gained something from my class."

[ooc: Standard procedure. Tell me if you passed and tell me what grade you've earned for the semester. This is not a good day to skip.]
[identity profile] overlord-zordon.livejournal.com
The announcements are surprisingly not on time this morning, coming between second and third periods.

"Good morning." No, Zordon's not disgruntled at all because eleventh-seeded George Mason upset top-seeded UConn in overtime to go to the Final Four. Even if he was, he speaks in a monotone, so how would you know? Regardless, the "good" in "good morning" doesn't sound very convincing today.

"Teachers are reminded to please submit attendance records for last week. In addition, students would be advised that the chirping in the stairwells appears to be coming from the Marshmallow Peeps in the vending machines. Whether or not they pose a health risk has yet to be ascertained. Thank you, and have a productive school week."

Before the PA shuts off, a split second's worth of mechanical gibbering can be heard, followed by a crash. Clearly, Alpha 5 should not be allowed to have sugar.

Dream appears preoccupied as he hands a quiz to each student upon their entrance to class.

The quiz is ten questions on Raven and Parseltongue, mostly translations.

When most of the quizzes are in, he starts a video.

There's coffee brewing, or bottles of water on the desk. Daniel smiles at them with his own coffee, and waves his hand towards them. "Help yourself," he said.

"Today, what we're going to be discussing ties in with the point from last lesson that people usually are not aware of their culture.

Ethnocentrism.

What is it? Is it just something that affects anthropologists? Is it something that you yourself have experienced or encountered? Can you think of any examples of it you've seen in Fandom?"

"Okay," Josh said, putting his hands together. "The Civil War was bad. Brother against brother, war pretty much without mercy. Names you should know: Lee, Grant, Lincoln, Davis, McClellan, Meade, Burnside, Longstreet, Sherman, John Brown, John Wilkes Booth. Battles you should care about: Antietam, Gettysburg, First and Second Manassas, the Wilderness, the Merrimac and the Monitor. Documents you should read: Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg Address. Reason you should know them: Quiz next Monday."

He smiled. "For today, a question for you all. The end of the Civil War and the 13th Amendment banned slavery in this country. But are you really free if you don't have an education and can't get a job?" He looked around the classroom. "Yes. Reconstruction. Andrew Johnson, radical Republicans, mistakes we made in trying to bring two parts of a very divided country back together. What should we have done differently? How much do you think Lincoln being alive for the post-war years would've mattered?"

Sociology of Violence

Grissom gives a lecture on Detention The Prison System

Discussion: The United States has 486 prisoners per 100,000 of population, the highest ratio of developed nations. Does this surprise you? Why or why not?

Sociology of the Paranormal

Grissom gives a lecture on apparitions, of the paranormal, spiritual, and supernatural nature.

Homework: Now that we've discussed thoughts on the afterlife, and various religious practices, I'd like you to prepare a report on a sighting of an apparition for Wednesday. It can be a personal experience, a report on a friend's experience, or a mainstream historical or religious event.

"What purpose to these things hold in speaking? What do they indicate tot he receiver/ And most importantly, are they a habit? A tick? An annoying trait? Or do they say more than you'd imagine? Let's go gang."

Honor is standing at the front of the room, arms folded across her chest. She is once again clad in her dress uniform tunic, though she has, in compliance with school policy, left the sword at home. Nimitz is perched on her shoulder, claws dug in just below her shoulder blade, and just above the ribbons on the left side of her tunic. From the gleam in his eyes, it is apparent he is highly amused to be here.

Good evening, and welcome... )

And now, your homework. )

Readings for the next class include: Pages 287 to 317 from Sea Power, and Chapter 3 in The Price of Admiralty. Be prepared to discuss!

This would be one of Camulus's favourite lessons. Mainly because he was in it.

"And now, my dear class, we continue our look at the Fenian Cycle of Fionn mac Cumhall." He writes 'Cumhall' on the board and then writes his own beneath it. "The name Cumhall is a derivation of my own. I was a god of war in Scotland and Gaul, and in Ireland I was the father of the great hero Finn. Sadly, I never met the boy myself but his deeds added to my own fame." See? He loved talking about himself. So he proceeded to do so for the next fifteen minutes.

Eventually he reluctantly returned to Fionn, going over the stories of the birth and boyhood deeds of Fionn rather quickly.

"Any questions about anything we've covered this class?"

[[Sorry for lack of class the last couple of days. Life is eating my brain. I've found some summaries of the Fenian Cycle so you don't have to wade through the full versions.]]
[identity profile] mrdmacleod.livejournal.com
"Okay." Mac rubs his hands together with glee. "Now we get to the ugly part. What most bothers you about the weapons you hated last week, why, and what do you admit to admit might be good to learn from using it."
