Another beautiful day had begun in Fandom, not that anyone in detention would have noticed. The lack of sunlight, the pleasant sound of Umbridge's voice, and the slightly stale smell of breakfast were all important aspects to making every day in detention routine! Surely everyone knew that surprises were no fun.

Look, the week was half over already and no one had been taken out and killed so far. That had to count for something, right?

It was Thursday morning and today, just like days past, Umbridge's voice rang out bright and early.

"Good morning, children of all ages," she said, sounding smug. "Your High Inquisitor wishes you a very good morning and promises that it will be a good day for us all. I'm pleased to report that your former principal is still in good health down in detention and will continue to remain that way as long as you all behave."

There was a brief pause before she continued, "And I must give special recognition to those of you who are so loyal and so faithful to me. You all try so hard to change the minds of those who continue to oppose us and your hard work does not go unnoticed. For all of you, I give you a round of applause!"

She clapped three times before stopping. And that was all they were going to get, yes. "For today, I want you all to pay special attention in class and remember me as you learn and educate yourselves. You are doing this for me. Your lives are mine and they always will be mine."

That was such a delightful thought.

"Oh, and for those of you in detention? My disappointment in you has not been quelled. How about this? The first one of you to come to me with information about your pesky, hidden classmates will get a meal of your choice, a very soft bed and tickets home."

She was lying but she didn't care.

"The offer expires tonight."

And then the intercom clicked off and the announcements were over.

"Mornin', kiddos." Yeah, it was only barely still morning, but like Jake cared. He kept to his own damn schedule, which meant a lot of lurking around at night, and falling asleep on random lawns because some things never change, AU or not.

"Today we're talkin' about bugs. Not the buzzy, creepy-crawly kind, the kind you can use to listen in on someone's conversation. Especially if you think they might be hiding something, like sympathies or connections to those who refuse to submit to the proper order of things."

"A bug- sometimes also called a wire, or a 'covert listening device'," that last bit was said with airquotes, "can sometimes be something designed specificially for that purpose, but it doesn't actually have to be. All that's required is a microphone and a transmitter, so with the right know-how, you can even turn a cell phone into a bug from a distance. There have even been instances of using car's security systems to listen in on conversations. Not that we have much use for cars here, but," he shrugged. "So- class discussion question: if you could listen in on the conversation of anyone here in Fandom, who would it be, and why?"

After giving some time for the students to supply answers, Jake pulled out a bag and placed it on his desk. "And now for the take-home portion of today's assignment: take one of these, plant it somewhere where you'll be able to overhear your intended target, and report back to me."

Clint might have had to deal with unexpected radioing today, but he wasn't about to be late to his class. The Danger Shop had been set up like an archery range, as usual, but instead of the usual recurve bows, there was a table of crossbows waiting for the students.

"Good morning," Clint said, giving them all a light smile. "Most of you have been progressing very well, so today we're going to move on from regular bows to something a little more advanced - the crossbow." He picked up one of the crossbows and went over the basics of how to load, aim, and fire. Then, he fired at one of the targets to show the students how easy it was.

Okay, it was easy for him, but it'd be easy for them too with practice!

"There's a bow here for each of you," he continued, "so spend some time getting used to handling it, and then see how well you shoot."

Unlike the previous few weeks of this subject, Cara stood at the front of the class today. Well, not so much stood, as leant in a way that just coincidentally showed off her figure to best advantage.

"Welcome back to the Pros and Pros of Celibacy," she began. If she happened to speak in a low, throaty (yet remarkably well carrying) tone that made everything she said sound vaguely like a come on...that was just how she talked.

I'll be taking you... )

"Welcome back, everyone!" Yakko greeted cheerfully "It's that time again! Time for the completely true pro-Umbie propaganda that you can't get just anywhere. Last week we talked about how Umbie discovered America when she flew here on her broom, the Santa Maria, which is a little too Catholic for a witch's broom if you ask me."

Nobody did.

This class makes no sense. )
