Hooo boy, was Amaya sure glad that the penultimate lesson in her shop class was almost always one that required a lot of set-up before hand! Not that she needed anything to keep her busy and occupied and not thinking about things like the sleeping bags in her living room or intricate armor pieces in her shop or glitter-covered magnifying glasses, of course. She just liked having a project and getting right to it and set it up as a means to an end, nothing to see here.

Well, actually, no, by the time class got started, there was a lot to see there, as Amaya had taken the time to put together several familiar contraptions all about the shop room, and pretty thrilled to get right into it.

"Now," she said, "we're almost done with the semester, and those of you who have taken this class before, and maybe even a few of my other ones, know what's coming up next: it's time to talk about your final projects for next week, and that means we're talking about Rube Goldberg machines.

"In a nutshell, a Rube Goldberg machine is a contraption designed to be overly complicated, using a variety of different simple machines and other devices, to do a simple task. They're named after a cartoonist who featured a lot of these in his work, and I've got a few of those recreated today, as well as some other ones, to help give you ideas on what you might like to create as your own Rube Goldberg machine.

"Today, then," she said, "is mostly brainstorming, getting some ideas, bouncing them off each other, and sort of fiddling around with this and that and seeing what might come out of it. You'll have free reign of the shop to start putting your projects together throughout the week, and the rest of today, but first, let me show you a few examples."

Stark was looking somewhat subdued this morning. He had a lot on his mind and some of it even related to class. Sort of.

“We have something a little different for you today,” he said. “Inspired by the weekend’s visitors. Inspired by our,” he paused and nodded to Summer, “visitors. They helped us plan today’s class before they had to leave.”

He flashed a fleeting grin at Summer, and Summer returned it with an encouraging one. “They chose the ingredients we’ll be working with today. All of them. The idea is to use all of them in your cupcakes. For good or evil, I suppose, though whether both are possible is something of a mystery.”

Inside each basket were conversation hearts, fresh ginger, a durian fruit, and, as a nod to their half-sister, some coffee.

"So it's liked Chopped," Summer offered, "only cupcake-specific and with ingredients picked out by two kids that are probably exactly what you'd expect by mixing our," she gestured between her and Stark, "DNA."

What a poetic way to put it, Summer.

"Let's see what you've got."

Congratulations, class, you all get to go home with an orchid today! Steve and Tony still had just...so, so many flowers in the Tower.

"Incorporating nature into designs can be very hit or miss," Steve began with a teasing smile aimed at his husband.

Tony scoffed and pretended he didn't hear such slander. "But it is becoming more prevalent these days," he added. "Especially in cities where nature is less frequent. For example, the Edifício Santalaia in Bogota, Colombia."

He brought up the image of the remarkably green building for the class to see.

"That's gorgeous," Steve admitted.

"It's an example of art and engineering working in harmony for a change," Tony said cheerfully. "Unlike certain terrible vehicles."

"Its accelerator sticks!" Steve replied, outraged.

"He's such a hack," Tony all but hissed before recovering himself. "Let's all just design something where you can incorporate nature. Let's make this our final project of the semester to give you plenty of time to work on it."

Steve nodded. "Calming nature," he agreed. "Build a prototype and next week we'll put it on the earthquake machine and see how it does."

"Splendid, looks like everyone's here," she said, looking over the group as the bell rang, bouncing Trebor on her lap.

"Spies. A resource that is often sadly overlooked. Industrial espionage, eavesdropping on a friend, employing reconnaissance behind enemy lines, all of these count as spying. However, it is not as straight forward as you would think. There are five types of spies," she stated, standing up and shifting Trebor to her hip as she turned to write on the board:
(1) Local spies (2) inward spies (3) converted spies
(4) doomed spies (5) surviving spies.

"When you have these working together properly, it is your greatest resource, greater than munitions or soldiers or generals. Information, as always, is the most powerful weapon of all."

"Each type of spy has a specific purpose," she continued. "Having local spies means employing the services of the inhabitants of a district, usually to help you detect localized troop movements and to be aware of changes in terrain. Having inward spies means you are making use of officials of the enemy."

"My personal favorite are the converted spies, getting hold of the enemy's spies and using them for our own purposes." Ghanima beamed at the class. "Subversion of a loyalist is always so entertaining."

"Then there's the 'doomed spies'. Some squeamish generals try to avoid this grouping, but they are indispensable to a solid victory. Having doomed spies, doing certain things openly for purposes of deception, and allows our spies to know of them and report them to the enemy."

"Surviving spies, finally, are those who bring back news from inside the enemy's camp." Ghanima said briskly. "There is no part of war more delicate, more intimate, or harder to balance than with spies. As Tzu says, 'None should be more liberally rewarded. In no other business should greater secrecy be preserved.'"

"Your assignment for next week is to ferret out some tidbit of information to which you would not normally be privy," Ghanima informed them. "Either via another spy, or by uncovering it yourself. You will not need to share exactly what you learned, merely the method used to discover the information."

"You lot can march back to your shelves," John said to the children's books that had set themselves up as a display just inside the front door. "The wee rugrats have gone home for the year, thank fuck."

And once again, he had not had a single one calling him 'Da,' so he was rather pleased with himself. That, and there was paperwork in-process for at least one more minion, so there'd be an extra pair of hands around. Maybe he'd get lucky, and get one or two more.

The library was open, sign on the door, and the Librarian was In.
