jedigrammarians: (Aphra: victimless details)

The holo projector was out again, because Aphra was a fan of visual aids. Also kind of a slacker sometimes.

"Kids, I know narrative's a drum I keep beating like a Jawa with a broken droid, but that's because it's important, being able to sell you sincerity is vital, and the facts back you up is nice, but if you've got a narrative people want to buy than that's most of youe job done for you. So you need to find that narrative, and you need to stick with it. Unless something better comes along."

"Look it's easier if you just watch the holo."

As crazy as it may have seemed, Amaya may have sort of overworked herself a little between trying to get a project done too quickly and being interrupted on account of a door. So she hadn't had as much time as she would have liked to have spent on planning something a little new and interesting for the class today, but that was fine, since she had plenty of things from last semester to dredge back up again.

"Welcome back, everyone," she greeted the class with a nod, "today's project is something a little more lighthearted and fun, but it's involved and I think you'll like it. Last semester, we managed to do these without me hearing about it being confiscated by any of your other teachers, too, so let's keep that trend going. Today, we're going to make some grappling guns."

It was back to Portalocity again this week, and students had been told to dress for rather more comfortable weather.

Comfortable and potentially rowdy.

"This week marks the beginning of a period of fasting and abstention from a number of enjoyable things for some sects of the dominant religion in these parts," Hannibal said. "Accordingly, prior to that, it marks a period of celebration, indulgence, and hedonism."

"Yesterday," Jono noted, "was, to many people, known as Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras. The day before the fasting begins, meant to clear the last of the fat from the pantry, so to speak." He paused, and then added, "Pancake day."

Well. It was.

"Užgavėnės," Hannibal said, not to be left out. "There are a number of different traditions for this day and this week. One of the more extravagant is Brazil's Carnaval. Even within that country, there are a number of different celebrations. Today, we will be visiting bate-bola."

"That's right," Jono agreed, "we're going to Rio." A pause. "The trade-off is that there'll be clowns."

Couldn't win them all, class. But this would be a singularly unique experience, perhaps the clowns could be forgiven.

Or you could just not worry about clowns. But you do you.

"There will also be music, fireworks, and general chaos," Hannibal said. "I recommend you stick close so as not to miss our portal back. If it becomes too much for you, please let one of us know; we have a portal on standby, and can get you home."

Or at least back to Fandom. Sorry, Vette. Nell. Jack.

Hannibal put on his wide-brimmed hat - which was, as all his hats, a joy, Jono - and smiled and waved them through the portal.

The danger shop was set up to look almost exactly like The Rocky Bits with a little workshop at the bottom. Because it was a compromise of safety between the two teachers.

"So, movie last week illustrated, well, gravity," Tony said. "So, this week we'll be working on defying gravity."

Steve was kitted out for rappelling, so you can guess who had been Team Real World. "Fabricate your ideas--not another sledgehammer, Beaker, I heard about that one on the radio--and then give it a test. We have a series of crash dummies for you to work with if you aren't completely sure about your design."

"Maybe use the dummies just to be safe even if you are sure!" Tony was a big mother hen about everyone else. But when he tested things...

The wry look Steve was shooting him over that comment was saying the same thing, yeah. "And afterwards, we can go rappelling!"

He had safety equipment, which was kind of a first for him!

Class met in the Danger Shop today. Verity was still supposed to be taking it easy, but ahahaha. No luck with that after the 'conversation' she'd had with Liam on Monday. The one that had ended with him walking out, with no sign when - or if? - he'd be coming back.

Time to push that out of her mind and focus on class though. Blessed, blessed class. "So, on the first day of classes, I chatted about how most fights fell into a kind of rhythm and how dancing could help you figure that rhythm out and use it. What I didn't mention was that there have been certain kinds of dances that are actually fighting styles for centuries now. Today we're going to learn about one in particular: Capoeira. It was created by enslaved Africans in Brazil, who needed a way to practice fighting moves under the noses of their captors. Through the history of Capoeira, it has been banned several times by the Brazilian government because of racism, but in 2014, it was named a 'intangible cultural heritage' by UNESCO. Today, we'll be going over the basic steps."

Which meant stretching was even more important than usual, kids!

"And once you've learned the basics, you can practice them out with some Danger Shop dummies until it feels like second nature."
