It was time for class once again and Riley's video game setup was all ready to go!
"Today, we're gonna be playing Doom," he began once everyone was all ready to go. "Doom's a 1993 science fiction horror-themed first-person shooter video game by id Software. It is considered one of the most significant and influential titles in the video game industry, for having ushered in the popularity of the first-person shooter genre. The original game is divided into three nine-level episodes and distributed via shareware and mail order. Little bit different than things these days, right? Can you imagine having your game divided up like that?"
He chuckled before continuing. "In Doom, players assume the role of a space marine, who became popularly known as "Doomguy", fighting their way through hordes of invading demons from Hell. As a sign of its effect on the industry, first-person shooter games from the genre's boom in the 1990s, helped in no less part by the game's release, became known simply as "Doom clones". Its graphic violence, as well as its satanic imagery, made it the subject of controversy. And that hasn't really changed at all today either. People love to look to video games for controversy. So, let's play some Doom and shoot demons and be glad we're not the Doomguy, dealing with this on the daily."
With that, the lecture was over and it was time to get the gaming on.
