"I should apologize. Up until now, we have maintained a fairly high standard for the level of scientific knowledge we have explored. And yet, this week's lesson is a large step beyond, as it not only brings us from mechanical science to biological science, but it also introduces you to the arcane sciences," Doom explained. "And yet, you will receive no apologies. The class is entitled 'Science You Cannot Possibly Understand.' The disclaimer was in the title."

"First, let me explain that despite what you may think, magic is nothing more than a science that operates under different rules than the traditional sciences," Doom said. "We shall explore this more in future classes, but for now, know that I have spent a lifetime applying myself to mysticism with significant success."

It's not explicit in the text, but you can figure Doom's tsk-tsking Doctor Strange in this class, too )

The students met in a standard classroom today, and Jack had written a list on the whiteboard at the front.

Leadership Qualities

  1. Honesty

  2. Communication

  3. Sense of Humor

  4. Confidence

  5. Commitment

  6. Positive Attitude

  7. Creativity

  8. Intuition

  9. Ability to Inspire

"So this week, you get a break from the exercise 'cause all we're working is your brains," Jack began. "Most of this class has been about working together as a team. Teams have leaders, and today we're talking about what a leader should be like. The list's from an article. I found on what makes a good leader. Most of it explains itself. Communication means telling your team what's going on. Creativity means that if things get shitty in a new way, or if the way you normally fix things falls apart, you can figure out a whole new solution." She paused there to pass out the article, giving the students time to copy the list if they wanted. "So today I just want to talk. What was the best leader you ever knew like? Did they match the stuff on the list, or were there differences? Best leader I ever knew had all this shit down, except maybe sense of humor. She wasn't exactly a laugh riot. But getting shot at a lot does that to you. If all the leaders you've ever known have sucked, what off the list do you think is most and least important?"

"And my second question for you is, what would you need to change about yourselves to be a better leader? Saying you'd rather make out with a pyjak than be in charge isn't an answer."

When the students entered the Danger Shop, they'd find themselves standing on a small boat in the middle of the ocean. Thor sat at the bow, a pair of oars in hand, and gestured for everyone else to take seats alongside both sides of the boat, where they'd find an oar for themselves. At least the students only had to deal with one oar each, rather than two?

"I will confess that I do not know too much about magical creatures," Thor started, as he began to row, expecting the students to follow suit. Thankfully, this was a simulation, so if anyone's technique was less than perfect... it didn't really matter.

Well, unless they then tried to use said technique out in the real world, thinking it would work just as well, but that wasn't Thor's problem. This was a class on magical creatures, not a class on rowing.

"What I do know about is the creatures of Asgard, some of which have become part of Midgardian legend. And so that is what we're going to be discussing in these classes. One in particular actually lives here in Midgard. Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent." Who was Loki's offspring, but Thor was leaving that part out. "He got his name due to- well," Thor stopped rowing and looked at the water expectantly. Within moments, a large serpentine head rose into view, the resulting waves sending the boat rocking. Don't get seasick, kids!

"Jormungand here lives in the ocean, and is so large his body encircles the entire planet. Typically, he keeps himself insubstantial, otherwise human ships would be running in to him all the time, and that would not be very pleasant, I suppose. Storms, earthquakes, and other natural disasters are often a result of Jormungand compressing his body about the planet. It is said that on the day of Ragnarök, that is, the end of the known universe, he and I shall do battle." The prophecy also said that Thor would die as a result of that battle, but he wasn't gonna tell the kids that part. Mostly because he didn't actually believe that would happen.

"In the meantime, though, how does one 'care' for a creature such as this? Simple. Do not anger it. As I mentioned, Jormungand is capable of initiating many terrible events if angered, and you really don't want to find yourself in the middle of a hurricane while out on the water."

"Good morning," Bruce said from the front of the ordinary classroom where they were meeting today. "To follow up on last week's session on music, today I want to talk about other forms of media that can help relieve tension. Specifically, comedy."

It was a weird class for him to be leading, since he himself hadn't ever really been very interested in film or TV. Not in a long time, anyway. And the shows and movies he did like were usually dramas. Destroying Unpleasant, that kind of thing. But it was certainly relevant to the aims of the class, so he was squeezing this lecture in.

"If you're not familiar with the genre, comedic shows and movies are usually on the shorter side, and have the goal of making the audience laugh," he clarified quickly. "Physiologically, laughter releases endorphins, hormones like the ones we've talked about in previous sessions, that can put you in a better mood. They also reduce tension in your body, which can have the same effect of relaxing you and making you more open to enjoying yourself. Although there are plenty of reasons to laugh that aren't related to something you might watch on television, sometimes when you're not in the best mood and you don't have friends around, watching something that can make you laugh might be your best bet to feel better."

"Since we're well into the semester now and most of you aren't new anyway, I figure you've all probably had sometime to get acquainted with the television sets in the dorms," Bruce said. "So let's start with going around and saying a favorite comedy show or movie you have, and how it affects you when you watch it. And then if there's time, we'll watch an episode of a comedy show for the rest of class."
