Jaye hadn't had anything horrible happen to her this weekend, which was actually a little embarrassing. Not that she wanted to be murdered or married or anything, but really? She had to be the chick who just showed up at a wedding to remind viewers she was there? Couldn't she at least have owned the Perk and opened it up for an introduction for the pop star?

Whatever, Fandom, whatever.

"So," Jaye said when class started over in the Danger Shop Theater. "Raise your hand if you're embarrassed."

That served no purpose except to see who got a better storyline than her.

"Well, you can put it out of your minds for a little while and watch a movie about prehistoric sharks terrorizing lifeguards after a tsunami. If it helps, they're really bad CGI."

"I don't know about anyone else, but I could use a quiet day after the events of this weekend," Zayne said. "And since I'm in charge here, we're going to get a movie day. It's a musical comedy about a guy who finds himself raising through the ranks of the corporate world without putting much effort in. It doesn't really work that way in the real world, just so you know."

There was really nothing in the world quite like hopping out of a portal onto the causeway from some random state full of boring old people, making a beeline for the Danger Shop, and discovering that it was playing-with-atoms day. At least, that was Topher's experience. And it was a pretty delightful one.

"The element kits are out," Topher gushed as soon as he spotted, sure enough, a whole bunch of element kits on the table. "Why are the element kits out?"

Because SCIENCE! That's why. )

"Professor Atreides has been called away on personal business," Tyrion began, looking rather more cheerful than he had after a similar weekend the year before. (He'd thought he was an assassin, yes, but at least he hadn't actually killed anyone. And the sight of Jaime in a priest's collar was one he could tease his brother about for ages.) "Which means you'll be listening to me again this week. In a nod to current events, we are discussing power through democracy."

"In theory, democracy means all citizens have the right to vote on the issues that affect their lives and the majority rules. In practice in groups larger than a hundred or so, it generally means you vote for someone who you hope will represent your interests. That's technically known as representative democracy."

"To get power within a democracy, you need to convince as many people as you can to support you. A cynic would say this is done through 'bread and circuses' -- feed the people and entertain them, and they won't care what else you do. However, some of the populace will pay attention no matter how many dancing bears you set before them. To get them to back you, you'll need to convince them you alone understand their needs. In short, you need to learn empathy -- or at least how to fake it."

He went on for a bit, describing various electoral strategies used in modern and historic campaigns.

"As a brief taste in democracy," he concluded, "you'll finish class by voting on what we will discuss next week. The choices are power through celebrity, power through age and wisdom, or power through bureaucracy. If any of those moves you, you may stand up and make a brief statement on its behalf. (And I know you'll all be fighting to sing the praises of beureaucracy.) Once that's done, we will vote on our way out via secret ballot." He nodded to someone sitting near the front of the room. "Make the case for your preference."

Today, the library was being beseiged by magazines. And not just any magazines, oh no. William found himself facing a deluge of glossy covers boasting such things as "FIND THE PERFECT GIFT" and "CHRISTMAS BAKING MADE EASY".

"Really?" he asked no one in particular. "Isn't it a bit early to start thinking about this sort of thing?"
