Jaye looked none too pleased to be here at the front of the Danger Shop Theater, and she wasted no time in saying why. "It's bad enough we have to work and be at school on a national holiday, but we have to be at work and school for first period. That's just not right. So tell you what, let's have an easy day and just watch a movie. And then you guys can hit the beach or something. Sound good? Good."

She didn't tell them that the movie was the meta for Jersey Shore Shark Attack, because Jaye was terrible.

Today there were a half dozen books who had apparently liberated themselves from the biology section and were following William around like ducklings. Which was only to be expected since that was what said books were about.

"Hello," Tyrion said, as he walked quickly into class just as the bell rang. "Lady Ghanima has been delayed, so I'll start class on my own this week."

"The first type of power we're looking at is hereditary power -- specifically, the hereditary monarchy. In an hereditary monarchy, the crown goes from one member of a family to the next. Generally the transmission runs father to eldest child to that child's eldest son, but with caveats. For example, women are skipped over in most systems of this sort unless there are no sons in their generation. A younger brother may inherit if the elder one is removed -- for example, if he dies young or joins a religious order. And if a whole generation dies without issue, the crown may go to whatever cousin shouts the loudest."

"There are good things about this system," he added. "It tends to be stable. It allows families to become expert at governing, just as another family may be expert at making shoes or running taverns. It rewards people for historic strength. And it's common in almost all cultures, so clearly it's something humans are drawn toward."

"But there are also problems, of course. The family in charge may get to the point where they're so removed from the small folk they rule poorly. Traits like cruelty or feebleness of mind or body may come to dominate a family, such that their hold on the throne is weak and their rule poor. And if a child inherits the throne before he is fully adult, the country may suffer under his whims."

"Your assignment today," he finished, "is to discuss the concept and decide whether you favor or oppose the idea as a whole. If you oppose it, what would you suggest in its place?"

"Technically speaking, this is skipping ahead a bit," Zayne said. "But today is an American holiday in honor of workers, so I couldn't resist the theme."

"Let's say you're established already and you have some employees. In more affluent countries like this, that means they have some basic rights and expectations for how they'll be treated. A minimum wage to earn, breaks in the day so they can eat and rest, rules that say they can't be compelled to work more than X number of days.... As I understand it, Labor Day is in honor of the people who fought to establish those rights here. Although, really, most people just enjoy sleeping in late and having cookouts."

"Not all places treat workers this well, of course. Some countries ignore pay minimums and don't care how many hours people work. Some go straight to sweatshop labor, which is even worse. And I've been to more than a few places where workers were literally slaves."

"So today, let's take a little time to appreciate what rights workers here do have and try to keep that in mind for your own businesses," Zayne said. "And with that in mind, let's get to the modern spirit of the holiday. You're free to go. Have some fun. Eat something off a grill if that interests you."

There'd been a handwavy email to let the students know to meet in the gym this week. It didn't make any sense to work up a Danger Shop simulation for what they'd be doing today, and there was a fun side effect of making Jaina feel all nostalgic being back in here after like ten years.

"This week we're going to start with some actual combat, but we're still going to start a little slow," Jaina began. "Bear with me. While we're actually doing some fighting, there are a couple rules I want to get out of the way. First, if there's anything you're really not comfortable doing, let me know and you get a pass. Only do that if you genuinely aren't okay doing something; I don't want to see you using that excuse because you just don't feel like it that day. Second, use of powers is allowed only if the other person you're working with is okay with it. Third, if I ever see anyone here hurting someone intentionally in this class, not only will you be in detention for the rest of the semester, but I won't hesitate in making you cry in front of the rest of the class. Got it?" Everyone should probably just nod at this. She was sort of used to breaking rookies down when needed.

"Today we're going to be doing some basic sparring. A lot of combat is thinking, and trying to think while you've got a lot going on around you or someone trying to hit you at the same time. So I'm going to make you do that, too. I'm small," she said, like there was anyone who hadn't noticed, "and I regularly go up against people twice my size and strength. That means I have to compensate by being faster, and sharp, and there are particular skills I need to keep up. And by doing that, taking out four guys at once in hand-to-hand isn't an issue for me. So I want you all to split yourself up in groups of beginner, intermediate and advanced, and find someone else in your group to spar against. You can mix up a little if the groups are uneven. And make sure to try and figure out that this person's strengths and witnesses might be, and see if you can't use that."

Have fun, everyone who was up with a fire drill last night!
