Gavin had almost been hoping for a rain of cereal this morning to make it easier on him in regards to bringing snacks to the club meeting. So, of course, it had stopped raining and he had to go pick up some chips and drinks. Said chips and drinks were now laid out and ready for snacking.

"Hey guys, welcome back," he greeted, nodding at everyone. "Hope everyone had a good holiday and didn't turn too green or anything. Anyway, today we're going to try something a little different. We're going to do scenarios again but this time, you have to pick your scenario without knowing what the scenario will be and what ship you'll be flying. It's a test of your improvisation and adaptability skills. You might not always get your choice of ship and you never know what you're going to run into up there. It's better to be ready than to get into the pilot's seat and have a freak out."

He'd done that before. Shh.

"So, let's get to it."

After the food fight in class and the cereal raining from the sky, Sam was very happy to be able to go outside and not end up covered in food.

This feeling lasted right up to the point where he spilled his coffee on himself getting into the library.

Luckily, Sam had a t-shirt on underneath his longer shirt, so he was only feeling a little embarrassed when he finally got settled in at the desk. If anyone asked him why he was under-dressed, well, he'd come up with a better story then.

"As leaders you will not always be popular," Nathan said as he passed around that week's handout. "Let's face it, if absolutely everyone agreed on what was the right thing to do you'd be out of a job. I don't care if you're running on a free chocolate for everyone platform. Someone out there, somewhere, won't like it.

"Hello!" Captain Hammer boomed happily, as he'd hidden away from the tiny children this weekend and thus not had to deal with that little element of insanity. He was, of course, wonderful with children, but they tended to cling and drool and vomit on things.

"Every hero," he said thoughtfully, pacing, "needs to learn to act less as a vigilante, at some point, and more in cooperation with the law enforcement. Those boys -- and ladies," he added, because he was sensitive, "in blue are important to running the city, and you have to keep that in mind when you're saving the day. Now, back home, the cops love me. There's a fan club." He posed, because...well, that was what he did. "But it isn't that way for all heroes! I've heard about people who have been outlawed from being heroes in their cities, because the police didn't enjoy their brand of justice. And sometimes, heroes can be branded as villains themselves, simply because sometimes we have to break the law to enforce it!"

"Your job today is to have one of those 'class discussion' things on how to keep the police happy and adoring you, because heroes often have to act outside the letter of the law, even while keeping the spirit of it," Hammer said, nodding. "Talk about what..." He consulted his notes for this word "...ethical issues you might have, with acting outside the law. Who's got the authority? The heroes, or the police, when it comes down to it?"

"We think therefore we are," Mohinder greeted the class. "Or I hope we do, at least here. The concept is an old one, that we cannot be deceived as to the fact of our existance."

"But," he continued, jumpimng down from his seat on the desk. "Who is doing that thinking? What directed the fire of neurons that expressed itself in your choice of breakfast this morning? Random chance, the paths of habit or the existance of mind?" He starteed handing out paperwork.

Picking up a model twin or quintuplet to those resting on the desks, Mohinder split it open and began to pointing out the regions when cognitive functions were thought to be based.

"Now, I'm not going to test your brain function with an IQ test. They're notoriously culturally biased when confined to a more standard population," Mohinder finished. "Instead, we're going in a more psychological direction, and trying to type your personalities."

Tyler was feeling lazy this week. Lazy, lazy, lazy. "The Great Depression," he began, without preamble. "A lot like what we have now, except people couldn't write blogs about how much being laid off sucked and there were more soup lines. Lasted from the stock market crash of 1929 until World War II. Here's a handout about the whole thing, and we're going to watch a movie. It's set in Mississippi during the Great Depression."

This totally made it educational. He poked at the DVD player, cuing up "My Friend, Whither Dost Thou Go?"

When the movie ended, Algren stood, nodding to the class. If he seemed somewhat skeptical about the educational content in the movie, he kept that mostly to himself.

"Your homework this week," he intoned, "is to economize in some way and tell us what you did next week. Did you switch to the cheaper store-brand food? Did you skip out on seeing a movie you wanted to see on opening night in favor of the matinee? It doesn't have to be much, but it does have to be something."
