CULTIVATION AND GARDENING

Last week, if you remember, a few of us planted our Amaryllis bulbs into pots and set them under some manufactured light sources, all this week I've been watering them and seeing them come to life.

After you planted your bulbs, what was your first thought of how they'd turn out? Do you expect them to grow wild and die within the week, or do you expect them to live and grow through out the season, blooming fully in the Spring time.

Discussion below

[[OOC: Sign-In Thread, Discussion Thread, Current Roster Thread and a Planting Thread for those that didn't plant last week.]]

[A note is taped to the TV in the room]

E. Set up video. Kids watch it. Anyone who causes problems, set them on fire. Enjoy the movie. CJC

Waiting for your viewing pleasure is Independence Day and don't dwell at all on why CJ thinks this particular movie has to do with friends...really, just friends..

((ooc: It's Midterm Review and my day is shot. The parent I'm playing will be very late, and CJ and Crowley will fall silent after 1pm EST and stay that way until I get back, which I'm sure will be really late. [livejournal.com profile] ten_and_chips can mod CJ as needed, and [livejournal.com profile] a_phale can mod Crowley. Have fun without me!!!))

Janet is sitting, alone, in the library, with a very determined expression on her face. Books are spread out across all the desks as she sorts them for re-shelving, and the toppled bookshelf (or two) from yesterday has not been righted yet.

She may have, however, forgotten to lock the door.

OOC: In other words, the library is technically closed, but the room is open for interaction and people to come and try to find out what happened.

I trust everyone remembered to write the papers I assigned. Please stack them next to the roll sheet and feel free to help yourselves to the coffee and snacks.

Today, we will be reviewing the laws of physics and how they are correlated when solving physical equations.

Journalism Class today has been cancelled, as mentioned yesterday, but there is a glowing message on the main news screen anyway.

Open Classrooms this weekend. I expect to review the footage when I get back and see that the various class campaigns have been set up in this classroom for the review of the parents. For those of you who normally receive credit for Friday's Class, please sign in below.

Again, no homework this week, but not having your materials displayed for the Open Classrooms will effect your midterm grade.

OOC: I do expect an entry in the dorms with links to everyone's work to be put up tomorrow - hence yesterday's announcement in class.

*The P.A. crackles to life*

Yo knuckleheads, I've just been informed that I gotta go deal with something back at my old job. Something about an incident between S-Mart and Foree Electronics. Wrestling Club is cancelled, and the King will be gone until Monday. Don't burn the damn school down while I'm gone.

Hail to the King, children. *laughs, and turns off the P.A*

Sarah isn't in the room, but the words "Help yourself" have been hastily scribbled on the blackboard. There's a stereo playing incredibly random music on her desk, along with some junk food and pizza, a TV with a video game hookup, and a pool table that has almost magically appeared in the corner. The puppies are wide awake and playing under Sarah's desk. It's almost as if she's bribing the students.

(OOC: My job sucks. Still not done yet. *headdesk* *headdesk* *headdesk*)

Alright kids,

Hoopy work on the zombie costumes last week! There was bondage, dirt, and lack of self-worth galore. I know you kids have never been to ursa beta minor, but trust me, you’d fit right in there. If the part of my brain capable of it hadn’t been burned off, I’d be proud of you.

Except for death_n_binky

Let me make myself clear, you hooded delinquent. No one knows the dangers of Zombie raids better than I. Two heads, I’m a veritable smorgasbord, all right? And should the day come that I’m eaten alive by one, they should at least have the decency to dress for the occasion.

For Zarquon’s stiff neck, this is a place of learning! There’s no room for free thought. Turn in your assignment, or face the consequences. Trust me, they’ll be really…not good. Dangerous even.

Now, on to this week’s assignment! Come as you aren’t.

By now, I should hope you all know your partners pretty well. I want you to design them outfits they would normally hang themselves before wearing. But don’t feel the need to stop there. Is your partner a human? Feel free to change their species for an hour. Is your partner no longer living? Go ahead and make them up to be corporeal!

If you can’t achieve the desired effect with make up, I have a temporary gene splicer I’m willing to lend out. Standard rules apply: I see nipple, you get to chat with the principal.

If your partner has dropped off the face of the planet, you can either dress a friend, or see me for a list of non-enrolled volunteers.

Brainstorm here, we’ll present them later in the week.

Daniel's still very happy, still doodling in his notebook.

"Following on from our types of marriage union, we're now looking at mate selection and marriage rules.

Marriage arrangements depend on observance of one of two rules:

Rule of exogamy (marry out)
o Requires marriage outside of a prescribed social group
o Not necessarily founded on genealogical proximity

Rule of endogamy (marry in)
o Requires marriage inside of a prescribed social group
o More usual in complex societies

Arranged marriages
o In many societies marriage is considered a union of two kin groups and not only two individuals
o Family has vested interests in marriage and kin (e.g. parents) of bride and groom arrange union
o Arrangements made before young persons control resources, sometimes while they are children (child betrothal)

Preferential cousin marriage
o Some societies specify a preference that certain categories of kin marry
o A common preference is for cousins to marry
o In lineage systems cousins are not all members of the same descent group
 cross cousins will be members of different lineages
 parallel cousins may be members of the same lineage
o Cross cousin marriage strengthens ties between kin groups established by previous marriages
o Parallel cousin marriage is less common (it prevents the fragmentation of family property)

Widow/widower remarriage
o Levirate requires a widow to marry the brother or other close relative of her dead husband
oSororate requires a widower to marry the sister or other close relative of his dead wife

Okay, homework is pretty much the same as last lesson... an example of one of these difering rules and selection from a culture not of your own.

And whilst I'm reminding my other classes, I'm operating a three strikes rule before I put you in detention. Have a good weekend, guys. I look forward to meeting your parents, guardians and others."

There is a pile of tartans and some rolled up posters on Camulus' desk, ready to be put up for the following day, which he shoves aside as he perches on the edge of the desk. "I know everyone's excited for the weekend, but you do have to hand in your assignments today. If you'll remember, the assignment was to create a story book from one of the tales we will be discussing. We'll begin discussing them on Monday, but today I just want you to read your story to the class, or even just particular pages or passages, and hand them in to be displayed." He gestures at a sign-up sheet on the wall. "I'm still accepting students for tutoring in Gaelic. I'll be in the classroom for most of tomorrow, so bring your parents or guardians by to visit."

Today we're going to have a bit of fun. Or at least I think it is.

We are going to have a mock meeting between two cultures meeting for the first time. We're going to break this into role playing in two weeks. We're going to pick roles and simulate what a meeting could be. Now, for the fun part: The two groups must make up a culture and keep it completely secret from the other group until we begin.

OOC: Role playing in role playing. Ha ahahahaaa!

Charlie's desk is for once not covered in papers, but in foodstuff. There's a plate with pizza slices on, a plate with cookies shaped like bats, half moons and possibly cats and cups of cocoa. He stands by the desk and smacks the hands of any student who looks like they're attempting to snitch something.

"Today's message to you all - Broots is my new TA! He'll be taking attendance and such when I'm not here, as well as helping me out with projects."

Rover, Martin Blank and Alanna Trebond sit at the registration table with information packets

Included in the packets are:
Your child's/ward's/whatever relationship you have with this person's Class Schedule
A Map of the School and Town
A Schedule of Events for Parents Weekend
The rules and regulations of Parents Weekend
A Coupon Book

At the desk is a sign saying:
Please sign in here for Parents Weekend

And depending who is looking at the sign it will magically say:
To ensure everyone's safety, please surrender any Firearms/Weaponry/Magical doodads that will cause harm to our students.

Your property will be returned to you before you leave.

Thank you!

ETA: Parents/Guardians are now required to check in on their own.
((OOC: In other words... If your parents are somewhat "normal" and unarmed they will not see the message. Unless they are packing some kind of weapon, and then they will be see it. Got it?))

As she leaves for the day to go meet Uncle George, Janet puts the following sign on the library door:

SIGN )

The text reads:

THE LIBRARY IS CLOSED
FOR PARENTS WEEKEND.
THE DOOR IS LOCKED.
KEEP OUT.
--The Library Staff

OOC: However, should you be Zero, Parker, Professor Pierson, or Janet and actually have a key to the library (or are with one of them), you might find some Girl Scout cookies, a bowl of fresh fruit, and some cans of soda set out on the Collections Desk in case you wanted to get away from the chaos for a while.

Oh, look, sorry this is a bit late, I've been sort of busy with something else.

There are croaks from behind him. Yes, I know. I'll be back in a moment.

This week's essay -- next week's topic -- is Love. Not sex, we did that a couple of weeks ago. Love.

I know it's parent's weekend, and that a lot of you are entertaining visitors over the next couple of days. If you can bring them to my room [[when I post about it]] tomorrow or on Sunday, and demonstrate that you understand the topic, then that'll be fine in lieu of an essay. But if your family aren't in town, then I'll need an essay from you sometime before the end of the weekend.

More croaks. Okay, I'm coming.

Love. By the end of the weekend. An essay ... or a practical. Make it good.

After covering the underlying structure it's time to look at mapping the surface of the Earth.

Cartography or mapmaking is the study and practice of making maps or globes. Maps function as visualization tools for spatial data. Spatial data is acquired from measurement and can be stored in a database, from which information can be extracted for a variety of purposes. The cartographic process rests on the premise that there is an objective reality and that we can make reliable representations of that reality by adding levels of abstraction.

Because of the infinite nature of our Universe it is impossible to capture all of the complexity found in the real world. For example, topographic maps abstract the three-dimensional real world at a reduced scale on a two-dimensional plane of paper.

More specifically the type of map projections chosen affects the distortion.

Two boxes sit on Tara's desk. One is filled with homemade cookies, with a small placard labelled 'To all those who attempted the assignment - help yourselves!'. The other is a bin to return the Master/slave badges at the end of the class.

Tara smiles as the students settle down.

"I told you last week that part of the point of this assignment was to separate out the issues of slavery and abuse. There are many, many issues with slavery, even without abusive elements attached, and I want to tell you how proud I am of all of you for attempting the assignment - especially those of you who were uncomfortable with it. I have a lot I want to say, but I'm going to bite my tongue and let you all speak, first. Tell me about your experiences with the assignment - what was challenging for you? What was easier than you thought it would be? Do you have any insights you would like to share?"

[ooc: If you would provide linkage to any RPed assignment bits and pieces, I would be forever grateful when it comes time for grading. Also, those of you who made icons? I adore you, and worship your icon-fu.]

At the end of the class... )

[ooc: Off to bed. Play nicely, see you all in the morning. Um, my morning. *as usual, kicks stupid timezones*]
