The Library (05/15)

Rory wandered in and opened the library for the first time in weeks, taking her seat behind the collections desk with a stack of books of her own.

[For les newbies - feel free to have your character come in and check out a book. All the dangerous stuff is located in Special Collections, for which you need a pass. For the oldbies - no OCD threads today since we don't have class periods. Just let me know what time you came in in the subject line or narrative. And Hermione and Willow, as soon as you're both in here, I'll stick up a thread of our own for the SC thing.]

Willow stuffed some books into her bookbag and followed along. She tried to look small and inedible.

Hermione grabbed a couple books, the bigger ones. She didn't think they would slow her down much, but if she needed to hit something, she could.

As soon as all three girls were in the corridor, the shelves slid together, trapping them, and lights flicked up.

They were in a large, very sterile-looking, modern library with metalic shelving all along the white walls.

Willow swallowed. "Um - hello?"

Willow's voice echoed back at her.

And that's when the walls started closing in towards them at a somewhat alarming rate.

And oh noes. No windows or doors.

"Sorry!" Willow said. She looked around for anything that might seem like escape. Then, on the odd chance it was all due to trigger words, she said, "Goodbye?"

Rory bit her lip, looking around at the still-enclosing walls, and frantically wished for Zero and her mallet.

Which, granted, wouldn't be a huge help here, but it'd be comforting, since the claustrophobia was already beginging to make her feel dizzy.

"Do either of you guys see a way out?"

"There's the way we came in but it's blocked now," Willow said.

The walls began closing in faster, and any one of the girls might notice a bright red book on one of the shelves, standing out quite noticably against the blacks and browns of the others.

Hermione looks around for a trap door or something, and sees something else. She starts to touch the book, but at the same time, she doesn't want to get them into more trouble. "Is this supposed to be here?" she asks.

"No idea," Rory said, "but it looks incongruous, doesn't it?"

"You could pick it up gently," Willow suggested.

Hermione chews her lower lip and pulls the book off the shelf, waiting to see if anything happens.

And that would be when the floor fell out from under them.

In the room below, there were soft, brightly colored cushions littering the floor conveniently right where Hermione, Willow and Rory would fall. Jewels and piles of coins were scattered about around the cushions, and there was a sweet, faint odor of incense in the air.

Directly beside one of the cusions was a book that might have looked like it was written in archaic Arabic, if one were to recognize that sort of thing, and a strange-looking metal thing (http://www.islandentertainmentsonline.com/acatalog/genielamp.jpg) beside it.

Willow 'oofed' as she landed on the pillows. "Okay. Red means falling. Now we know."

"Something to keep in mind," Rory agreed, looking up at where the floor/ceiling/whatever was closing above them. She noticed the book and lamp, and gingerly picked up them both up, wincing in case she burst into flames or something.

"I wonder where we are," she mused, turning the lamp over in her hands.

"There had better not be any three-headed dogs this time," Hermione mutters.

"Or two headed," Willow added. Not that she'd ever met a two-headed dog but really as far as she was concerned all dogs could remain with one head.

Rory really should've been more careful with that lamp.

A billow of purple smoke started to shoot out of the stem, puffing into the room in dark jets, along with a truly maniacal laugh. Faster and faster and faster and---

"STATE YOUR WISH!"

Wow, that guy was big.

"I didn't do it!" Willow said at once. Not that she had a guilty conscience or anything.

"Oops," Rory said, hissing and dropping the lamp, which had gotten quite hot.

"Hello there," says Hermione slowly, and winces in case the walls start closing in again.

The genie-- at least nine feet tall and half-cloud half-man, and who looks like Mr.Clean on acid, all psychedelic yellows and purples swirling over marbled gray skin, bald and with gold rings on his ears, nods.

Then pauses. "SO. I'VE GOT ALL DAY. YEAH. BUT IF THIS TAKES A WHILE, I GET OVERTIME."

"...wish?" Rory asked timidly. "We're supposed to wish for something?"

He sighed, and eyed the three of them.

"IT'S TRADITIONAL. NOTHING THAT BREAKS THE LAWS OF SPACE TIME ALCOHOL GOOD SENSE OR POLKA. OTHERWISE, GO CRAZY."
