The Library (05/15)

Rory wandered in and opened the library for the first time in weeks, taking her seat behind the collections desk with a stack of books of her own.

[For les newbies - feel free to have your character come in and check out a book. All the dangerous stuff is located in Special Collections, for which you need a pass. For the oldbies - no OCD threads today since we don't have class periods. Just let me know what time you came in in the subject line or narrative. And Hermione and Willow, as soon as you're both in here, I'll stick up a thread of our own for the SC thing.]

"What about wishing for more wishes?" Willow asked.

The genie looked disgusted.

"THERE'S ALWAYS ONE. LOOK, KID. IT'S INVERSE PROPORTIONALITY. YOU WISH FOR A HUNDRED MORE WISHES? THEY EACH GET ONE ONE-HUNDREDTH LESS SUCCESSFUL. YOU ASK FOR A THOUSAND, YOU MIGHT AS WELL GIMME A QUARTER AND ASK ME TO TOTE YOUR LUGGAGE. THREE IS GOOD. THREE IS STRONG. MAKE UP YOUR MIND, AND DON'T GET STUPID. ALL RIGHT?"

"It's a perfectly valid question," Willow pouted.

"It is," Rory said, patting Willow on the arm. "Um. Mr. Genie? I think I'm okay without wishes."

Since the first thing she'd thought of not only broke one of the rules, but was something...or rather, someone that she didn't need to have show up in front of two girls she'd just met.

He shrugged massive tattooed shoulders, then turned dark eyes without pupils back on Hermione and Willow. "BACK TO YOU TWO, THEN. WELL? WHAT'S IT GONNA BE? WEALTH, HEALTH, BEAUTY, POWER, PRESTIGE, PENGUINS?"

"Penguins?" repeats Hermione, then adds, "That's not my wish."

Anything she can think of to wish for... really isn't appropriate. "I don't have any wishes."

"We could - and for the record I'm not making this an official wish yet - but we could wish to get out of here," Willow pointed out. "Or - or world peace. That's nice too."

"REMEMBER WHAT I SAID ABOUT GOOD SENSE?" The Genie gave Willow a look. "BUT OUTTA HERE, THAT, I CAN DO FOR YOU. LEAVES YOU TWO TO GO. SOME PEOPLE GO FOR MARIJUANA. I CAN DO YOU A ROOMFUL."

"World peace is perfectly sensible!" Willow said. She even stomped her foot to emphasize the point.

"YEAH. SO, YOU WANT EVERYONE DEAD? IF YOU WANT, WE CAN WAIT FIVE MINUTES WHILE YOU MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR YOUR AFTERLIFE."

"You know, I don't think I should be scolded just because you lack imagination on how to provide wishes without killing people," Willow said.

"Um," says Hermione quickly. "I would wish for us to get out of here without anyone dying." She's careful about her phrasing, yes.

"I'M A GENIE. IMAGINATION IS WHAT YOU MORTAL TYPES ARE FOR. FAR AS I'M CONCERNED, YOU WANT PEACE, YOU GET PEACE." The Genie shrugged. "SO, WE DONE HERE, OR YOU WANT TWO OTHER WISHES? YOU COULD GET A MAKEOVER. MAYBE A BIKINI WAX TO START."

"No looking!" Willow said, folding her arms in front of herself. "That's very rude!"

Hermione just stares at him. Then continues to stare.

"GOIN' ONCE. GOIN' TWICE." The Genie raised his hands, lightening crackling between them. "THREE FOR THE PRICE OF ONE-- YOU. ARE. OUTTA HERE!"

And with an enormous crash of thunder, and a strobe of blinding purple light--

they were back at the entrance to Special Collections.

Hermione, still clutching the books from earlier, steps through the door. "How long were we in there? What month is it?" she asks.

Willow patted herself down, because really after all that it wasn't a certainty that the genie would've been nice enough to make sure her clothes were still on her.

Rory glanced out a library window. Still raining as it had been when they left. "I'm guessing it's still May. Probably no more than a few minutes to an hour after we left."

And that's when she noticed her nails were bright red.

"And the genie gave us manicures."

"I hope that's all he gave us!" Willow said. She held up her hands. "Oo - pink!"

"Why are mine blue?" Hermione asks, frowning at her hand. "I look diseased."

"Could've been worse," Willow said, still on the idea of the bikini wax.

[ooc: must go to bed. feel free to mod her leaving the library if Herminone goes too]

"They're funky," Rory said encouragingly. "Not diseased. Unique."

"So, that's it?" Hermione asks, ignoring the nails in favor of her books. "We did it?"

"You did." Rory smiled. "You guys can go sit at a table, if you want. I'll have it open for a few hours more."
