BWI Portalocity Lounge | Saturday Morning

One of the very few perks of having a meteorologist for a mother was that Amy could almost always avoid weather-related flight delays by relying on her mom for information. That was usually very convenient, but today it meant that due to anticipated late morning storms in northern Texas, Amy had been forced to fly in at ass o'clock in the morning so that she wouldn't run the risk of missing the bus to school. So it looked like she was the first person to reach the Fandom High banner in the airport lounge, and while Amy had always had hopes of one day winning a race, this wasn't quite what she had had in mind.

Armed with an overstuffed duffel bag and her favorite pair of sweatpants (they were decorated with little cartoon strips of bacon!), Amy stifled a heavy yawn and parked herself in a distant corner of the lounge where she could wait for more people to show up.

"I think I like it," Hanna said, sounding hopeful. "Thank you. I appreciate any warnings you give me."

Polite, she could do. Having your dad as a drill sergeant made it reflex. And perhaps... "I have not been to school before, with other children. Is there anything I should know, first?"

Also, it was interesting that she seemed to hear his voice in her head. Ventriloquism?

Jono was the best ventriloquist act in town. He didn't move his mouth at least once!

//Oh, luv, you're in for a treat.// He held out his hand, ticking on his fingers. //There's usually free food in one of the common rooms, if you're feeling peckish. You'll most likely be sharing a room with another new student, but you'll be assigned a big sibling out of the existing lot to show you the rope. The year's 2015, just barely, Fandom Island is located in America, and yes, those are both things that will probably be relevant in conversation at least once.//

Hanna was taking all this in with immense concentration, it was obvious. The year, for instance. Hadn't it been 2011 yesterday?

"...free food?"

Priorities! She beamed at him. "That would be wonderful."

//That's usually the one the new students appreciate the most,// Jono replied, amused. //If the common rooms don't have anything, there's the school cafeteria, though I've been told that the quality of whatever comes from there is sometimes a bit suspect.//

"Sustenance is secondary to enjoyment," Hanna told him very solemnly, but with a slight smile. It faltered, after a second. "Or so my father always said." She cleared her throat. "What do I call you, sir? I am Hanna Heller."

//Jono is fine. Or Mr. Starsmore, I suppose, as I am one of the teachers at the school.// He was quiet for a moment, taking note of that falter, and then nodding, just a little. //So, what brings you to Fandom, Hanna?//

She'd had time to come up with a lie, a good lie, a respectable lie, since she first got the idea while talking to Amy. She was very proud of it! And so it spilled out of her breathlessly.

"I am here in America to learn more about the world, and to broaden my experience of other cultures," she said, all at once, with very little affect but great seriousness. "I wish to prepare for my future career by ... making contacts on an international level."

There! Wasn't that admirable? And acceptable? Sophie's parents would have accepted it without a qualm.
furnaceface: (Very disappointed in you)

//International level, hm? Well you've shot for the stars there, luv,// Jono replied, clearly amused. //And then some.//

He wasn't really sure he bought it. Seemed like an odd reason to come to Fandom, of all places. But if that was the story she was selling, who was he to call her out on it?

//So, what future career might that be?//

"I... haven't decided yet." Just please, not soldier. Or assassin. She was really tired of killing people. She gave him a weak smile. "Perhaps in diplomacy. I am very good at languages." Hanna tilted her head. "Do you like teaching? Do you find it fulfilling?"

//More fulfilling than some things I've done over the years,// Jono replied with a shrug of his shoulders. //It's probably not for everyone, but the students are... usually at least somewhat thankful by the semester's end, though that might just be that they're happy to be rid of my rambling for a while.//

"What do you teach?" Perhaps she could take lessons with him, and find out more about possible options. And gain enough time for all traces of her to sink into obscurity.

//A class about powers and identity,// Jono replied with an easy shrug of his shoulders. She didn't seem to be too put-off by his telepathy, he figured it probably wouldn't be that strange a class for her to hear about. //Any use to you, by any chance?//

Didn't hurt to ask, around here.

And at a question Hanna hadn't prepared for, she froze. Except for the hand that inched for the gun at the back of her jeans, something feral and blank in her expression for a moment. She checked the exits, checked the surroundings, then swallowed.

"Why..." No, no, wrong question! "Identity," she said, focusing away from powers, letting her hand drop back to her side. "Perhaps. Yes."

...perhaps?

That was a look Jono knew. He knew that look very well. And in reply, he simply held up his hands, and tried to look as nonthreatening as possible.

She had something behind her back that went with that look, and he wasn't in any mood to discover just what that something was.

//Identity,// he echoed, carefully. //Though one ties in to the other one. For what it's worth, though, I'm teaching with a fair bit of experience behind me, on that topic.//

Hanna really scrutinized him at that; the covered face, his eyes especially, then from top to toe. And considered his voice in her head again.

Perhaps. Not... ventriloquism? But this was not the right place to ask.

She gave him a tiny nod of acknowledgement. "That would be. Helpful. Yes." She licked her lips, and straightened. "I look forward to speaking with you again, Professor Starsmore."

//And I you, Hanna.// He gave her a small nod. //I'm certain this semester is going to be an interesting one. Hopefully you settle in on the island smoothly, but if you need anything, I'll be at the welcome picnic until that wraps up today.//
