BWI Portalocity Lounge | Saturday Morning

One of the very few perks of having a meteorologist for a mother was that Amy could almost always avoid weather-related flight delays by relying on her mom for information. That was usually very convenient, but today it meant that due to anticipated late morning storms in northern Texas, Amy had been forced to fly in at ass o'clock in the morning so that she wouldn't run the risk of missing the bus to school. So it looked like she was the first person to reach the Fandom High banner in the airport lounge, and while Amy had always had hopes of one day winning a race, this wasn't quite what she had had in mind.

Armed with an overstuffed duffel bag and her favorite pair of sweatpants (they were decorated with little cartoon strips of bacon!), Amy stifled a heavy yawn and parked herself in a distant corner of the lounge where she could wait for more people to show up.

On this side, there was no flash of light, no glowing door-- just a teenage girl in full (helmless) armor, sword in hand, stumbling suddenly into the room out of nowhere.

"Maker!"

//Hey, fresh meat headed to Fandom? Th'bus is now boarding.//

Yeah, Jono said that before he so much as opened the door to the shuttle, because he was an ass like that. He was going to open it and step off the bus a moment later, though, in case any of the new students needed a hand with any luggage, because he wasn't a total ass.

Mostly.

//Watch your steps, mind the glitter.//

The bus didn't actually have any glitter on it, by some miracle. Seriously, Jono lived for this.

Cassandra righted herself. Her eyes were wild. "Where is the mage?!" she snarled. "Are you another apostate?"

... Please excuse her, it'd been an odd couple of minutes.

Awww, a student who was both polite and not freaking out at him being the first on the bus? Jono liked this one already.

//Thanks, luv. I'm Jonothon. Professor Starsmore, I suppose, if you want to stand on propriety, but I still don't know how to react to being called 'Professor.'// He held out a hand to help her with her bag. //Long trip so far?//

Call it a hunch.

This... man looked as if he knew what had happened here, and no, the fact his voice did not appear to be coming out of his mouth hadn't escaped Cassandra.

Of course, she leaped to the wrong conclusion.

"Mage," she snapped, looking up at him from the street. "You will explain this to me now."

Cassandra let out an irritated noise, but at least she lowered her weapon. She was only just beginning to recover her balance, so that was probably a good choice for herself, as well. "A student of what?"

'Mage' was a new one even for Jonothon, and he blinked at the girl - nice armour - before shrugging his shoulders.

//Close enough,// he decided. //This is the bus. It'll be taking you to school, where, presumably, unless you decide to skip your classes or something, you'll be learning things. Whatever things you registered to learn.//

A beat, and then he added, //Most of our classes are even useful, this semester.//

None of this made the faintest amount of sense to Cassandra. Had she been bewitched? She was certain the apostate she had met in the Wilds had been disoriented-- perhaps disabled-- or... she had to be.

So she decided on a less confusing path. "Where is this school?" she asked. "Ferelden? Orlais? Nevarra? Tevinter?"

Had she been sent to the Imperium? That would explain a great deal.

Well, it had been nice while it lasted. Jono really didn't seem to mind all that much as he slung the bag over his shoulder and made his way to load the bag onto the bus.

//Most people wouldn't believe me if I were to tell them, on their first day,// he noted. //Ever hear of superpowers, luv?//

To be entirely fair, at the moment it took very little to get an accusation of magehood from Cassandra, who was... frazzled, to say the least.

She was also possibly doing more gesturing with her sword than some might be comfortable with.

"Again with this school," she said. "Talk sense."

//Here, tell you what,// Jono sighed, waving a hand. //You put that thing away, and I'll tell you everything I can. Just be mindful that you might not like the answers... I'm not certain how you wound up here, if you're confused about it yourself.//

He totally got the 'no idea how I got here' deal. After all, his first day on the island had been courtesy of some kind of sentient fairy mist.

"Are you attempting to work magic on me?" Cassandra asked, because her noticing things was not simply limited to matters like 'hearing someone's voice inside her head'.

Waving hands? Also a red flag.

"The United States?" What? Cassandra eyed the girl warily. "You mean the Free Marches, surely? How could I have been sent this far--?"

She had never heard of such magic before.

//Not hardly. I couldn't do actual magic to save my life. Here. Look, hands by my side,// Jono replied, blinking and slowly clenching his hands into fists at his hips. //If you're concerned about the voice, really, don't be. It's not magic, it's just how I talk.//

Super encouraging, Jon.

//No mouth.//

He'd point at the bandages, but he really wasn't in the mood to get himself stabbed. Even if it wouldn't kill him. There would be fire, and he'd have to replace those wrappings. Terribly inconvenient, that.

Cassandra had never wished as furiously to have the elder Seekers' spell purging abilities than she did right now. "How?" she asked, though now the tone was tilting more plaintive than demanding.

She hated it. It was embarrassing, to have her voice break like that.

She lowered her sword slowly.
