Hero Management- Monday- Period 3- Class #1

It was Hermione's first day teaching.

It was a little intimidating.

Still, she was trying not to look intimidated, especially when this was a subject where she definitely knew what she was talking about. All she had to do was remind herself that she was in charge, and act authoritative. That part at least wasn't hard at all.

"Welcome to Hero Management. My name is Hermione Granger. You may call me Miss Granger," she started. 'Professor' didn't seem to fit in this situation and she wasn't about to let her students call her by her first name. "If you didn't read the class description when you signed up, or if perhaps you were signed up accidentally, this class is going to deal with how to manage being part of a hero's support system. If you've been in Fandom for any amount of time, you know that there are people who have important destinies, or who end up at the forefront of crises. This doesn't apply to most of us, but that doesn't mean there's nothing we can do to help. One of my best friends defeated the greatest Dark Wizard of our time at the age of seventeen. I won't say standing behind him was always fun or easy, but when he needed help, I wanted to do what I could for him. So for the next seven weeks, you're going to learn some things that will allow you to help out the best you can. And if by some chance you're one of the hero types taking this class, maybe you can pick up some pointers yourself."

"Now," she said, "the first week is usually all about introductions, which is exactly what we're going to do today. I want you to go around the room and introduce yourselves, along with the reason why you're taking this class. Let's start with you."

"Wizard?"

One of the problems with Jack is that he has no internal monologue and tends to blurt out things as soon as they come into his head.

"Did she just say 'dark wizard'?" he asked in a hushed tone to nobody in particular.

"She did," Scully said, keeping her voice down in order to not draw attention. "I'm sorry?" That seemed like one of the only things she could say, if that was coming as a shock.

The mention of a wizard didn't really phase Percy. He was just glad there wasn't anything to take notes on today so he could just listen and try to focus on the words that were coming out of the teacher's mouth.

Even if his attention stayed on Miss Granger, he was still restless enough to tap his fingers against his desk and twirl a pencil around between his fingers.

The wonderful thing about teleportation was that Raven could easily return from Italy to make it to class. She didn't want to miss the first day, after all.

Having a few weeks off before class meant that Luke's ability to focus was up, so he was fully alert and listening to everything the hot teacher was saying.

And noting that he might quite possibly be older than her. Sigh.

"Hi," Jack said standing up doing a brief wave with his hand. "I'm Jack Carter and I have no idea how I ended up in this class."

That would be because Zoe filled out the curriculum choices for Jack because he's oblivious.

"I mean... okay, I tend to dive headfirst into crises when they erupt but that's just because somebody has to do it and somehow it's always my responsibility anyway. It's not like I need to be managed or anything."

Oh, Jack. There are so many people in Eureka that would disagree with you.

"Dana Scully," Scully said, nodding to the teacher and her classmates, then sighed. "If your best friend was as capable of being bitten by vampires, knocked out, kidnapped, conned, infected with weird viruses and led astray as often as mine? You'd take this class for coping ideas too."

See what you made her do, Mulder?

"My name is Spock," Spock said, "And I am not sure why I am in this class. I do not recall signing up for it. I suspect some kind of paperwork error." Like the one that kept sticking him in sex ed. Look, he was honest. "Still, I am certain I will find it educational and look forward to learning whatever it is that you have to teach us, Miss Granger."

Now, see, Luke knew that he had one of those destiny type things (thanks, crazy mom!) and he couldn't really see himself being a support system for someone else. The urge to do stupid things himself was too strong. But he tried to think of a good excuse to take this class anyway.

"Uh, well, I'm Luke Castellan and I'm taking this class because..." It took him another second to actually come up with his answer. "...I think there's a chance I might one day stop hogging the spotlight and let one of my friends do the hero thing and I could help them out then."

Well. At least he was right about the letting his friends do the hero thing part.

"Uh, I'm Percy Jackson," he said, trying not to fail on something as simple as introductions this time around. "And I'm taking this class because I've been in a lot of situations where I've needed a support system from my friends and they've always come through for me so I figured I'd try and make sure I could do the same for them."

That sounded good, right?

Hey, look at that, she was English too! That was neat.

"Hello," Wesley said. "I'm Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. I'm taking this class because a large portion of what I was trained to do for most of my life had to do with assisting heroes" -- well, heroines, but close enough -- "and it's rather something I'd like to be good at."

"Hello, I am Raven," she said tiredly. She hadn't gotten a lot of sleep the night before. "I am taking this class because a former student here once told me he knew an alternate version of me who was on a team of heroes. I do not know if that fate lies before me now, but I thought it best to be prepared."

"Gabrielle," said the girl in the thoroughly impractical outfit. "My best friend is . . . she wouldn't call herself a hero, but as far as I'm concerned she is."

Someone was extremely biased. In a totally platonic way, though. Really.

"I don't think we'll agree on that any time soon, but that isn't the point, is it?" she went on. "The point is that when she and I are traveling together, trouble always manages to find us whether or not we're looking for it. Except a lot of the time we are looking for it. It's part of her whole search for redemption, trying to make up for the horrible things she did in the past -- and please don't ask me to elaborate or we'll be here all day . . ."

Keep talking this way, Gabrielle, and you'd be here all day anyway. Wrap it up, will you?

"She loves what she does. She's good at what she does, but sometimes she gets a little carried away, and I'd really like to avoid resorting to the good old hitting-her-over-the-head-with-a-rake solution again, if you know what I mean."

Oh, thank the gods. She was done.

For now.

Oh, very funny. She had to explain why she was taking this class when she wasn't the one who picked her courses? Stephanie was so going to kill Br -- ahahahaha. Yes, despite the absurdity of that statement, the sentiment still stood. Awkward.

"Stephanie Brown," she said, chin propped up on her hand and the best perplexed expression she could manage on her face. "Noooooo idea how I ended up in this class; I think someone in the office keeps putting me in the weirdest classes ever."

Also the concept of managing Batman was completely laughable. Maybe this was O's idea of a joke. Ha ha.

". . . but it'll be an interesting conversational point on my college transcripts later?"

"Surreal, and I do not understand what a 'hero management' or a 'wizard' is," she confessed. "My...benefactor made my class choices for me."

All of Surreal's reading had been Craft lessons and poisons. Not so much history or fun fiction. Certainly not the corset-ripping novels some witches her age favored, which were filled with heroes.

"Claudia Donovan," said Claudia. "I'm here because, well, I'm already working for a place with a couple of hero-y kinda people? And I kinda want to do more than inventory, some day."

That was about as specific as she could get about the warehouse, alas.

"My name's Rinoa Heartilly," she said, standing up with a little wave. "I ended up on a small team that was fighting against a powerful Sorceress. Everyone else was a trained mercenary, and I ... had no useful skills or anything. I do now" -- long story -- "but I hated being the useless member of the group, the one that got kidnapped, and I ... want to learn how to be useful in other ways."

"Hey," Warren nodded as he stood, fidgeting slightly as he thought on his reasons to be here. "I'm Warren Worthington. And, um... I honestly probably wouldn't have taken this class a year and a half ago, when I first came here. I never really saw myself as the hero type, or even the support-the-hero type. But... Fandom is a kind of crazy place that way. Things happen, and you find yourself with friends who have big responsibilities, or destinies, or ones who are just prone to finding big trouble..."

He shrugged a little, feathers ruffling a little behind him.

"I'm really not hero material, but I at least want to be able to be whatever it is that the people I care about need me to be."
