Art of Seduction [Wednesday, Period Four]

Bond waited until the class was seated before he started speaking. "Good afternoon class, I trust you all had a pleasant week?" After all his had been very pleasant indeed.

"Today we'll be looking at the first date. Now there are a number of options you can choose from when it comes to first dates, though ideally it will be a low pressure environment where you can both relax." Not that Bond was terribly familiar with those. "You can go out for dinner and maybe dancing, if the weather is good you could go on a picnic, and of course there is the time honoured tradition of going to see a movie. Choosing to see a movie has a number of advantages, it's dark and intimate, yet also public, there is very little pressure to speak, unless you happened to choose a completely dire film and spend your time mocking it, the choice of movie can help indicate if you and your date possess compatible tastes, and if you sneak food in instead buying it from the concessions stand, it's relatively inexpensive."

"Today's exercise will be simple enough, I will put on a romantic movie, and you will pretend that the person sitting next to you is your date."

[ooc: wait for ocd up.]

So. They were going to play a game. Fantastic. Emma contemplated flat-out asking Jack if he had a masochistic streak, but refrained. Barely.

"Well enough," she drawled, keeping her attention on the film and not him. "It's a relaxing enough way to spend the class period."

They were going to play a game. It was what they did best, it seemed, and 'what the fuck happened Saturday' wasn't a good place to start any conversation.

"Quite relaxing," he agreed. "And I like this film. It's well-made."

He started it. She could, and would, play nice, but she wasn't going to make it easy.

"Are you a fan of the cinema, then?" Emma inquired politely. "Or just the period pieces?"

"I haven't seen enough to have strong opinions yet. Professor Mitchell said I should try some made during the '30s and '40s," Jack answered. "I liked an action film I saw in the common room Monday, as well."

He could do meaningless chit-chat forever; give him a bit, and he might make it draw blood.

"I suggested action movies to Michael the other week," Emma replied, letting her eyes linger on the other boy if he was there. "I ought to see if he's found anything to interest him yet."

"I wouldn't want to stand in the way of your social life, of course," Jack suggested, barely bothering to look at Michael. Jealousy over something like this was beneath him.

"He might. Rose talked me through my first one. Your car chases are really quite something."

Emma cast him a bemused smirk. "Who said you were in the way of anything, darling?" she asked sweetly. That would imply he posed some sort of obstacle, which was rather laughable. "I'm glad that you enjoyed your movie and the car chase, they can get quite a reaction when done right."

"Mmmm," Jack agreed, equally bemused. "Were you going to go talk to him, then? I only meant I wouldn't take up more of your time than necessary, if you've other things to do."

"We're in class, Mr. Priest," Emma pointed out slowly. "Asking Michael if he'd found any action... films since last week would not be appropriate."

Innuendo totally intended.

"Am I boring you?" Emma replied. "I'm sorry, I thought you asked if we were being vulgar."

"If you're asking whether or not I am ill-behaved, well, I would think you know the answer to that by now, and being facetious about it," or anything else, "is beneath you."

... oh, she had to go and bring his conscience into it. An annoying prickling at the base of Jack's brain told him he'd gone too far.

"You'd be surprised what is or isn't beneath me," he informed her, first. Then he added, more gently, "Saturday is forgotten."

Not ... entirely accurate. But it would do.

Emma never claimed to fight fair.

"I am rarely surprised, Mr. Priest, but when I am it tends to be rather unpleasant," she replied a bit more sharply than necessary. "It's against my very nature to misjudge a situation - " or a person " - so you can imagine how disconcerting it is when it happens."

It wasn't like Emma had meant to do it, and she thought that Jack had understood who (and what) she was. Emma didn't like being proved wrong.

He understood; there was just a difference between understanding and suddenly realizing someone was in his head. And he still wasn't entirely convinced she hadn't done it on purpose.

"I'm usually a good judge of people myself," he said. "I think we were both disconcerted -- would that be fair?"

"Really? I seem to remember a young man with a book," she answered. "Hardly the image of a disturbed individual."

She'd paid attention, even as she'd gathered the shreds of her dignity to flounce out the door. Emma might have been less angry about the whole thing if he'd even seemed a bit frazzled afterward, but the cold dismissal still rankled.

Jack's armor of indifference had gone on because he was so frazzled; it was the only way he knew to cope.

Not that he had any intention of explaining that.

"You're going to think what you want to think, aren't you?" he asked, then lowered his voice. "We kissed. It ended badly. I'm sorry for that, and I won't do it again."

Emma sighed and looked down at her desk. "Forgotten and forgiven are two different things," she pointed out quietly, "So I'm not quite sure what to think, yet, and you aren't giving me much to go on." She could just go in and look - they both knew that - but she wasn't and she wouldn't.

"It was an accident, Jack, and I'm still not even sure how it happened." Although she planned to have Karla help her figure it out. "I don't care that you kissed me; in case you didn't notice, I wasn't calling for a stop initially."

"I don't know what you want me to give you, Emma," Jack said, and it would seem placid if you didn't notice the way he leaned back on his hands to keep them from giving him away.

"I believe you didn't know that would happen" -- mostly; he wasn't entirely convinced -- "but until you can promise me it won't, I'm not sure how I feel about all of this."

He didn't dislike her; it wasn't that. He was just confused.

Fine.

"Then no more kisses for you," she announced airily. "I'll have to find someone else to practice with, since that's the only way to make sure it won't happen unless I want it to."

"Of course," Jack said, not letting his face or voice betray the twist of disappointment in his guts. He was barely acknowledging that himself. "I'm sure you'll have no problems finding volunteers."

"I would think that most people would like kissing someone who can make it that much better," Emma complained, wrinkling her nose at him. "You just had to be difficult, didn't you?"

It was said in a teasing tone, however, laced with amusement and affection. Being afraid of her power was still kind of like being afraid of her, but Emma would take a compromise on this one. "You'll just have to promise me that you'll empty your dance card for an evening, once this is resolved to your satisfaction."
bitten_notshy: (vaguely bemused)

"Always. I'm horrible," Jack said, the same sort of affection in his tone as he relaxed a bit. "But I'm yours whenever you have a use for me, Miss Frost."

Dirty totally intended.
