Sexual Anthropology, Tuesday, Period 2

"Good morning," Brennan greeted the class once they all seemed to be in their seats and more or less quiet. "I hope you all made it through the alligators all right; Valentine helped me dissect one and I'm still reviewing our findings." She gave a tiny, grateful smile to the girl in question assuming she was there.

"I know our syllabus says today's class will be about sexuality and religion, but that's really too broad a topic to cover in this class, especially given the wide range of cultural backgrounds. Instead, we'll be talking about aphrodisiacs." Oh, impending irony. "An aphrodisiac is any substance used in the belief it enhances sexual desire. In modern culture, there are certain drugs known to function as aphrodisiacs, such as testosterone supplements, a drug called Yohimbe, and Bremelanotide. Drugs like Viagra, which cure impotence, are not seen as aphrodisiacs because they have no effect on the sexual centers in the brain."

"However, of more interest to this class are the folk medicines and foods seen as aphrodisiacs. These have included some chosen for suggestive shapes or origins, like rhinoceros horn and tiger penis, as well as an incredible range of foods, such as arugula, basil, chocolate -- which may actually have a mild chemical effect -- fennel, oysters, coffee, and the sap of red bananas. The ancient Egyptians saw lettuce as the most potent aphrodisiac of all. Most of these, of course, work only as placebos. There is also cantharadin, known as 'Spanish Fly'; it acts as an irritant and can cause death in too large of a dose."

"Today, I would like you to report back to me on your mock courtship exercise from last week, then sample from the platters of alleged food aphrodisiacs in the back of the room and note any effects they have on you."

Karla shook her head. "It's not that," she explained, pulling over a chair. The full explanation could get long, if Professor Brennen had questions, and from what she'd seen of her teacher, the odds were good that she would. "Wearing Jewels, especially the Darker Jewels, changes a witch's physiology," she said with the confidence of a mostly-trained Healer. "It ramps up the metabolism, for instance, which is why I'm constantly hungry. It's also an energy-drain; if it came down to it, I could literally use my Jewel until my organs collapsed and my heart ceased to beat, and my bones turned almost hollow. I'd have to be pouring a LOT of Craft through my body for that to happen, but it can," she paused to nibble on a slice of avacado.

"Wearing a Dark Jewel also slows the onset of puberty. Sexual desire exists, I'm just a little removed from it. I've been assured that will pass, though."

"Yes." If Karla was disconcerted by Brennen's gaze, she didn't show it. Living with Black Widows meant that penetrating stares were the norm. "The Darker the Jewel, the correspondingly more powerful the member of the Blood. There are thirteen Jewel ranks, with White being the weakest, and Black being the strongest. Sapphire is the ninth Darkest Jewel. In a few years, when I make my Offering, I may be able to descend as far down as the Ebon-Gray, the second-Darkest Jewel rank."

Karla shook her head. "One can only descend a maximum of three ranks from one's Birthright Jewel during the Offering. To wear the Black, I would need a Birthright Red Jewel. But only a handful of Blood have ever worn the Black. It is very rare. Even the Ebon-Gray is rare."

Of course, her best friend wore Birthright Black, but this wasn't the place for that conversation.

Karla smiled. "It is and thank you. Though I have another five years before I can make the Offering." She grinned a little wryly. "If, as a scholar, you would like to talk about my culture some time, I'd be happy to tell you more about Blood society."

If Brennen thought Karla seemed odd now...

"I'll stop by," Karla promised. "Is there anything specific you'd like to know? Otherwise I might start talking about Glacia's imports and exports and yearly rainfall or something."

Karla laughed. "My best friend's guardian is the High Lord of Hell. I think I'll be okay to talk about the dead, some." She gave Dr. Brennan an impish look. "The Blood have no laws against murder, though, so there will be little I can talk about there."

"I'll see you Friday, Doctor Brennen. I'll bring along my report about my dinner with Eric," Karla said, heading back to her seat. Though she did stop to grab a few more pieces of avacado.
