Sexual Anthropology, Tuesday, Period 2

"Good morning," Brennan greeted the class once they all seemed to be in their seats and more or less quiet. "I hope you all made it through the alligators all right; Valentine helped me dissect one and I'm still reviewing our findings." She gave a tiny, grateful smile to the girl in question assuming she was there.

"I know our syllabus says today's class will be about sexuality and religion, but that's really too broad a topic to cover in this class, especially given the wide range of cultural backgrounds. Instead, we'll be talking about aphrodisiacs." Oh, impending irony. "An aphrodisiac is any substance used in the belief it enhances sexual desire. In modern culture, there are certain drugs known to function as aphrodisiacs, such as testosterone supplements, a drug called Yohimbe, and Bremelanotide. Drugs like Viagra, which cure impotence, are not seen as aphrodisiacs because they have no effect on the sexual centers in the brain."

"However, of more interest to this class are the folk medicines and foods seen as aphrodisiacs. These have included some chosen for suggestive shapes or origins, like rhinoceros horn and tiger penis, as well as an incredible range of foods, such as arugula, basil, chocolate -- which may actually have a mild chemical effect -- fennel, oysters, coffee, and the sap of red bananas. The ancient Egyptians saw lettuce as the most potent aphrodisiac of all. Most of these, of course, work only as placebos. There is also cantharadin, known as 'Spanish Fly'; it acts as an irritant and can cause death in too large of a dose."

"Today, I would like you to report back to me on your mock courtship exercise from last week, then sample from the platters of alleged food aphrodisiacs in the back of the room and note any effects they have on you."

He was getting to sample things that increased sexual desire? Alex couldn't and wouldn't find fault in that.

Joan had no intention of eating anything that might be considered an aphrodisiac.

Every time she thought this class couldn't get more embarrassing...

Karla calmly took notes, blissfully unaware of the impending irony.

Her mun, however, spent the time snickering.

As per their agreement (http://decoder-rings.livejournal.com/10150.html?thread=1025702#t1025702) Chuck was wearing the kilt (http://www.sportkilt.com/product/831/Kilt---Buchanan-Sport-Kilt.html) Hannibal had bought for him to class. And, even though he told Hannibal he wouldn't do it, he had messed up his hair for the occasion, doing nothing to it after waking up except ruffle it a bit with his fingers. It really did add something to the look (and, no, he didn't want to know when Hannibal became an expert on his hair) even if having it like that annoyed the hell out of him.

He actually looked quite relaxed wearing the kilt. Or maybe he was just happy he got to eat in class.

If anybody needed Zack today, they'd find him right back at square one. Bright pink and contemplating hiding under his desk.

Aphrodisiacs? Equalled blushing.

Angela was of course paying attention here. Her sex drive really didn't particularly need a boost. At all.

Didn't mean she wasn't considering smuggling any of those foods out with her...

A lot of the things (except, of course, the chocolate) that Valentine found herself gravitating toward were fruits and things like that. Fresh stuff.

Jack was so glad he'd signed Jill up for this class.

He was a little confused about why he'd come to in her desk chair instead of the bed, though, and why he seemed to be missing time. He hoped she hadn't figured out how to block him from accessing her memory. That would really suck.

But now back to being superglad he'd signed Jill up for this class. Oh, how she must hate it.

Alex handwaved like a mofo reported back on how cheap a date he was in the realm of his courtship with Leda. He just wasn't a dater.

"Sam was a pretty good date," Zack reported, perking up a little at the opportunity to talk about something that didn't include increasing his sex drive. "We went out for Chinese, and then we talked about sports. Stuff like that!"

Common ground! Yay!

"My date with Zack was really good," Sam said, smiling at Zack because that was far easier than looking at Chuck. "We had a good conversation, and I think that's really one of the most important aspects of any date."

"My date with Valentine was fun," Chuck said, looking pleased. "We had a lot to talk about. And the fact that she's nice to look at didn't hurt either."

Re: Homework [Sexual Anthropology, 6/2]

Of course Valentine had practically a mini-thesis.

"Chuck and I," she said, "engaged in the courtship ritual of the dinner date, with an added bonus of a token from the male to the female. The gift was of notable value, which would suggest that Chuck is either very stupid or very rich, to throw money like that on someone he's known only for a few weeks. And since this date included conversation, I can conclude that Chuck is not stupid. If this were an actual courtship, then, this gift would have established to me, the courted, that he would be a substantial provider, making him a desirable candidate."

Here she gave a wry smile. "Of course, it didn't hurt, either, that he's nice to look at."

Pause.

"Especially in his cute little skirt."

Alex stuck with the chocolate for the time being. He wasn't too sure about some of the other things spread around and he wanted taste with his sexual desire, thank you.

Joan grabbed a piece of licorice and decided to nibble on that. It seemed safe enough.

Karla, being Karla, took a little bit of everything. She didn't really care about aphrodisiac qualities, she was just hungry.

Well, the dark chocolate was good. She may have had extras of that.

Dark chocolate? Yeah, it wasn't a very hard choice for Anemone as to which one she was going to test.

"Excuse me, Professor Brennen?" Karla asked hesitantly, nibbling on a bit of lettuce. "Eric's mun had no internet was sick or something, so we couldn't meet up. But we're going out for a movie and dinner tomorrow, is that okay?"

Valentine, of course, was around, happy to be nibbling on some chocolate and pondering on the whole chemical vs. imagined effects.
