Science Lab, Saturday

The door to the lab was open, and Sam was behind the desk, working on some calculations before she went back to experimenting. She'd snagged a piece of naquadriah when she'd been back in Colorado and was trying to come up with some way to harness it as a predictable energy source.

So far, she wasn't having any luck. When the phone rang, she was almost grateful for the distraction.

[ooc: Door's open, anyone's welcome to do sciencey things, and I should be around for most of the day.]

Saturday afternoon. What better time to work on a project? Well, Rodney thought so, at least.

"Howdy partner," John singsonged, sidling up to where Rodney was working sometime after detention. "How's our project coming along?"

"'Our' project is progressing just fine. So nice of you to show an interest," Rodney said with a condescending sneer.

"Hey, can I help it if I was busy in detention all day?" John pointed out.

"Oh, right," he nodded as that sounded vaguely familiar. "What'd you do this time?"

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mooned the new vice principal," John replied casually. It'd been a paperwork error, but he didn't need to ruin his reputation.

Rodney paused for just a moment. "Nope," he said almost to himself as he shook his head. "I'm not surprised."

"Does anything surprise you, Rodney?" John asked, leaning his hip against the table and wondering what their project actually was. Maybe he should pay more attention.

"Not much," he exaggerated. "When you try to plan for the worst, you're not caught off guard nearly as often as other people." That much was true. He fiddled with some of the equipment.

"What about the good stuff?" John wondered. "No hoping for the best or making the most of things?"

"'Hope for the best, plan for the worst.' Isn't that how it goes?" Rodney asked rhetorically. "Just because I plan, that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the better things," he defended himself.

"Which explains why you're doing homework on the weekend," John supplied.

"Yes?" Rodney wasn't really sure what point John was trying to make. In fact, he doubted that John actually had a point.

Re: Work on Your Own

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
John was laughing. "That's just sad."

Re: Work on Your Own

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"But, this is fun," he gestured to the lab as a whole. "Inventing something new, the experimental process, making discoveries that could one day benefit the human race and earn me a Nobel." His eyes lit up at the possibilities.

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"So fame and fortune are your thing?" John asked, watching the way Rodney lit up and knowing it wasn't.

Re: Work on Your Own

[identity profile] mrodneymckay.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Have I said anything about popularity or money?" Rodney practically pouted. "Not that I'd say no to some proper recognition of my vastly superior intellect once in a while," he sighed.

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Naturally," John agreed teasingly. "No chance any one else could match your brainpower."

"Exactly," he nodded, deciding to take the comment at face value.

Before heading off to New York, Tyler popped by the school to the science lab. He had an idea and he wanted to ask Sam about it before anyone else.

And he also wanted to just pat the lab toys a little.

"Saaaaaam," he greeted. "How's lab time going?"

"I have an idea and I wanted to run it by you before I talked to the administration," Tyler explained. "What kind of a science fair do you think we could put together if we tried to use our forces for good?"
tyler_gone: (sometimes I look cute)

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-04 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"And now you're frightening me," Tyler chuckled. "I figure we'll probably come out ahead if the gym's in one piece at the end."
tyler_gone: (perfectly sane)

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Tyler actually bounced at that thought. "Okay, maybe the science fair needs a theme. Design something that might be useful in the next Fandom invasion. Extra credit if we use it."
tyler_gone: (really rather intense)

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That required contemplation. "I can't decide if adults should be a separate category or not," Tyler mused. "Maybe? On the other hand, you don't want to measure the kids by a shorter stick just because they're under 21."
tyler_gone: (cynical)

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-05 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"These kids would be insulted at the idea," Tyler said. "Who else teaches science? I should see if they're interested too before I start making any big plans."
tyler_gone: (really rather intense)

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-05 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Tyler evidently did too. "And something with trees," he reminded her. "Maybe I'll bring it up next staff meeting. I wouldn't wanna do it until end of term, so we have time."
tyler_gone: (talking calmly)

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-05 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
"I think on the fly we'd get a lot of 'look, I mix this and this and it explodes,' " Tyler said dryly. "We should give them warning so it's a little less repetitive."
tyler_gone: (death glare)

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-05 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Probably," Tyler agreed, swinging himself onto a lab table. "At least this way we're giving them two months, so maybe they might figure out ways to make a bigger bang. More interesting for us."
tyler_gone: (thinking about it)

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-05 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
"At least the locker will be well-stocked when we get invaded by flying vampire bats, or god knows what?" Tyler suggested. "But thank you. If it happens it'll be a lot of fun."
tyler_gone: (deceptively bland)

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-05 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
"I can't argue with that," Tyler nodded. "Though I never exactly feel like I'm hurting for free time, here."
tyler_gone: (thinking about it)

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-05 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
He nodded slowly, not sure what more he could say about it. "Are you doing okay settling back in?"
tyler_gone: (smile (nothin' but blue skies))

Re: Talk to Sam

[personal profile] tyler_gone 2008-10-05 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
"And life gets way too dull without invasions," Tyler nodded. "I need to get going, heading up to New York for the day. But I'll check into the science fair thing."
