Wilderness Survival - Week 6 | Thursday Morning, A Clearing in the Woods

Callisto stood at the front of the class, giving no sign that she might have been up all night doing things in the wood. "Good morning class," she said. "Great news, today you get to keep your shoes. Well, some of you at least."

After giving a brief, yet highly informative, lecture on snares and pit traps, Callisto, pointed to a group of maps and several piles of rope.

"One of the more important parts of trapping is the placement, so those of you with shoes, take a map and go scout out the area to try and find suitable areas to lay snares. While they're doing that the rest of you will work on snare making."

Shoes:
Alec
Joxer
Cameron Mitchell
M Parker
Buffy Summers
Aeryn Sun

Shoeless:
Hamlet Dane Jr
Alphonse Elric
Janet Fraiser
Max Guevera
Molly Hayes
Sam Winchester

[ooc: Of course, unbeknownst to the shoes group, Cal has spent the previous night laying snares and traps of her own for them to find. I'll ping in when you stumble across one. Nothing that will actually harm more than the trappee's dignity, but in most cases you'll need help to get out.]

[ooc: OCD threads coming are up!]

And, well, Alec wasn't psychic, either. He stepped in the snare and was unceremoniously yanked off his feet as it was tripped, which made the yelp he voiced at the sudden movement totally understandable if still completely undignified.

Having heard something, Aeryn follows the sound- carefully- to its source. "Hello," she greets Alec.

Alec was doing that twirling in place thing that happens when you have a weight at the end of a string. "Aeryn! Little help?"

Aeryn heads over, grabbing at his shoulder to stop him from swinging. "How tight is it?" she asks, looking up. "Probably couldn't wriggle out of it, right?"

"Right now it's got about 81 kilos holding it taut, so no, no wriggling out," he said, glad to not be spinny anymore. "It's just awkward enough I can't reach up to give myself slack."

All right, she's not going to be able to hold him up or anything, probably. Not at this angle, at least. She looks up, visually following the line of the snare. "Have anything to cut it with?" she asks.

"Not on me," he admits, looking up at his snared foot like he can get it to let him go through sheer wilfullness.

Aeryn spends some time hunting around on the ground, looking for something sharp enough to cut the noose. When a small island has both rocky bits to it and woods, it's not that far-fetched to find something useable that might have gotten displaced to another area. She does manage to find a triangular rock, not very large and not very sharp, but she can work with it.

Then she starts climbing the tree. Not that she's moving very quickly with any of this, by the way. She's not the one in the trap.

Without Aeryn to hold him still, Alec is back to twirling slowly. "Has Callisto always been this crazy?"

"Probably not this crazy," she says while climbing, and she's having a little difficulty because of the rock pressed between her thumb and palm. "I think it's a more recent development. Keeps things interesting..."

There's a branch not too far below the noose. Aeryn starts climbing out onto it slowly, keeping one hand on the noose branch until she's in the right place. Then she starts hacking away at it with the rock.

Alec tries to twist so he can watch her, starting to feel a wee bit lightheaded. "Relationship fallout is doubly annoying when it's not even your own," he mutters, not particularly quietly.

Having escaped the pit, Buffy followed the sound of voices, ending up standing beneath Alec and looking up. "Hi, Alec! Aeryn! How're you doing?"

"HI, Buffy," Aeryn says distractedly, finally cutting through the rope and hoping Alec doesn't damage his neck.

And then he's falling directly on Buffy, so maybe the worry should be saved for the wee tiny girl instead.

He's uninjured, except for maybe his pride of course, but a tiny bit dazed now that the blood isn't pooling in the top of his skull anymore. "Thanks, Aeryn," he manages to call out.

Aeryn moves over, and drops down from her branch. "Anytime," she says, and heads off.

"Um," Buffy said politely, pushing at Alec's arm. "D'you think you can get off me now? You are not light like a feather."

Alec rolled off of Buffy and flopped on his back on the ground for a moment. "You're the one who stood under me," he pointed out.

"I didn't know you were going to fall down just then!" Buffy protested as she got back on her feet. She looked down at him. "Our coach might be evil."

"I fell down a pit," Buffy informed him, pointing at the tear in her shirt. "Did she say anything about pits? I don't remember pits, just snares."

"She said to go out and look for good places to set traps," Alec said dryly. "The fact that there are some out here already is the kicker."

Buffy glanced over at him, eyebrows high. "Don't tell me you're shocked and surprised?"
