Home Economics; Friday, Second Period [04/15].

Due to the nature of today's lesson, the class was moving from the usual classroom into the danger shop, not because they were doing anything particularly dangerous (although there were always some who seemed to turn nearly every activity into something rife with danger), but just because it required a lot of little details not afforded to them by the classroom that could just be programmed up withthe danger shop.

In the form of your basic, average, more-than-likely suburbanite home.

"Today," Ignis explained, "we're going to be talking about some of the finer details of the general maintenence of a home to keep everything in working order and running smoothly and will help be preventative to avoid further, bigger problems down the road. Things that one might not naturally think of until it's an issue, from checking your smoke detectors to changing or cleaning various filters for furnaces, stoves, dishwaters, what have you. Some of this involves taking a day to dedicate yourself to deep cleaning some things, other involve checking how well something is functioning. I have, of course, an exhaustive list that I will be passing out to you all now so you each have a copy, we'll go through it together, and then we'll be using the rest of the class for you to pick and choose a few of them to pursue around our makeshift home here.

"Of course, feel free to ask any questions as we go along, but, without further ado, let's have a look at where we might get started. All at once, it might seem a little overwhelming and a lot, but if we break it down and spread it out, maintaining a home will hopefully seem a little less daunting, especially in cohesion with everything else we've covered in this class thus far."

Libby had been really lingering on some of the more manual tasks on that list, the ones that would normally be reserved for her brothers, when she saw the opportunity to help out, and decided she'd much rather do that.

Besides, it shouldn't take too long to help out with a vaccuum cleaner.

"Oh, that's easy!" she offered, smiling at Jo a little as she swooped in and lifted up the cord trailing behind the vacuum. "You'll probably want to start with plugging it in, though."

"Oh," Jo started to flush a bright red as she hadn't even considered that she needed to plug it in, "I've ... I've never used one of these before," she admitted.

"That's okay," said Libby, her smile now gone encouraging as she went over to the socket to plug in the vaccuum. "It's really actually pretty easy. Just be careful of the cord; usually, they're pretty long, but you'll be vaccuuming away, and the next thing you know, it catched on a table leg and yanks it clean out of the socket. At least here you won't have to worry about any Littles tripping over it in the meantime, either."

Although she supposed they could run into that problem with some of their classmates.

"But once it's plugged in, you just have to find the on-off switch on the vaccuum and that starts it up, and then you just push it around and try to get the whole carpet."

Jo watched as Libby put the cord in and listened carefully to her explain what she needed to do, "so I just turn on the switch and that's all I need to do to operate it?" she asked, looking at the carpet around them.

Maybe it wasn't as complicated as she thought it was.

"Pretty much," said Libby, taking a moment to think about it, since she knew she'd been doing it for so long that it might just seem like second nature to her, but, really, she couldn't think of anything else. "You just have to hold it by the handle, and push, and....oh!"

She did think of one little detail, moving back over to Jo and the vaccuum cleaner and, after looking it over, grinned as she moved her foot on the little lever toward the bottom that loosened the handle from its upright position. "Ta-dah! The pedal loosens it up so that you have more mobility."

And with that, she demonstrated how to push it around to clean the carpet before relenquishing it to Jo to try. "Just switch it on, and that's it!"
