Home Economics; Friday, Second Period [01/07].
As one might expect, Ignis stood at the front of the home ec classroom, waiting for the students to file in and keeping a close eye on the time so that he could be sure to begin at the start of the period precisely. And, once that time was reached, he dropped his hand, slipped his pocket watch back into his pocket, and looked around the classroom.
"Welcome," he said, "to Home Economics. My name is Ignis Scientia, and I will be your instructor through this very varied field of useful skills and helpful habits. Some of you, I'm sure, are wondering what exactly home economics is, and, simply put, a course that will explore aspects of life management, particularly focused on the home, to help lead to a more efficient and hopefully fulfilling existence in that space. Some of the topics we will be exploring involve basic upkeep, such as cooking, cleaning, sewing, and budgeting. Others will focus more on quality of life, things like design, gardening, resource management, stress relief, and useful hobbies. And since there is a lot of ground to cover in such an open-ended and nuanced field such as this, I would certainly like to know more about what you, yourself, would like to get out of this class.
"Which leads us, of course," here, Ignis seemed to nod his head and grin faintly as a consession to his amusement, "introduction, which I hear is a staple of the first week of classes here, anyway. So, if you would be so kind as to indulge me, I'd like us to go around the room a little and have you state your name, if you have any experience in the subject, and if there's anything in particular you might like to focus on in the course of the semester. Also, any concerns or questions you may have regarding the class can be discussed at that time, as well. And when we are all finished with those, we will move on to a simple and basic task to start out with. Please keep in mind, this activity will not be a contest or a race. It is simply a way for me to measure where some of you may be on a simple skill that we will explore more in depth at a later period, one that, if there's anything you take away from this class, I hope it is merely this:"
His grin grew perhaps a little bit more.
"How to sew on a button. Which may seem like a simple task, but you might be surprised, and if you manage to pull that off today, well, then, you've already done better than a future King of Lucis."
Ignis Scientia: throwing shade at his leige to a bunch of teenagers in an entirely different dimension.
"But before we get into all that....do we have any volunteers who would like to go first?"

Re: Introductions - Home Ec, 01/07.
"I'm Josephine Jones," Jo said, sniffling a little despite her best efforts, "I go by Jo, um … I don’t have any experience with any home stuff …” she looked really awkward because she didn’t really want to mention that her father had servants to do all of those things for her but she didn’t know of any other way to describe her home life without bragging, “I had to my own darning at my old school but I was never any good at it,” she shifted uncomfortably, “um … my dad has people at home to do those kind of things for my family,” she turned bright red again as she realised how that sounded, “oh my gosh I’m sorry that was rude,” she blurted out, “I mean … I would … I would like to learn to do those things for myself, how to do them without needing help I mean,”
The tears had started to build up again, second class in a row where she had made an absolute fool of herself.
Re: Introductions - Home Ec, 01/07.
"There's certainly nothing wrong," he said, "with having people to do those things for you. In fact, I daresay, quite a bit of my career has depended on that, as personal attendant to a crown prince."
Something he hoped might put Jo a little bit at ease, knowing that he was no stranger to some of the dynamics involved in higher society.
"But I will say," he added, "that it shows an immense sign of your character, Jo, that you are willing and perhaps even eager to take it upon yourself to learn to do these things by your own hand, or at least gain enough knowledge to appreciate all those little things that some are fortunate to barely have to think about on a day-to-day basis. Self-sufficiency will always be a valuable skill to have."
Re: Introductions - Home Ec, 01/07.
“I …I’ve come to realise that how I was taught growing up was wrong and…” she fidgeted a bit, “I want to correct that,” she said softly, she wasn’t going to elaborate any further but it had been a hard way to learn that that lesson.

Do you need another useless royal to compensate for the one at home, Ignis?

although canon is really vague on this," Kiem said. "And, well, I'm used to having people cook for me. And sew."He quickly added: "But I'll try to learn, I promise!"
Re: Introductions - Home Ec, 01/07.
"Hello," she started brightly, "my name is Liberty Hazlett, although mostly everyone just calls me Libby, and I've been taking care of household things for a real long time! I've got six brothers and sisters, most of 'em real little, and I'm the oldest, so it's always been kind of my responsibility to help take care of them and help Mama with all the chores and what have you. So if it's not too prideful for me to say it, I'm real good at this sort of thing. But I'm sure I can be better, or maybe you've got some real interesting techniques to show me, Mr. Scientia, sir, that'll make me even better, because I'm always willing to learn and improve! Although I will admit, I'd have to say I don't much care for laundry day. You'd be surprised how quickly six little brothers and sisters can dirty up a shirt almost before you've even gotten it out of the wash!"
...so that would be a no.

And then it was their turn to give it a try, and he would certainly be moving around to see how everyone was doing and whether or not they needed some help or guidance.

"Are there bigger needles?"
He sounded a bit desperate.

Kiem now had a needle with a thread through it, and looked pleased about it.
