Philosophy of Food | Monday, 4th period
The Danger Shop this week had been programmed in two halves - on one side, there was a formal dining room with fine china and silver. On the other, a neat blanket was spread out over grass, with a well-crafted wicker basket in the middle. The dishes there were sturdier and the silverware plainer.
Hannibal stood at a table between the two halves in his best...lizard-skin suit. He was still a bit disgruntled about it, yes. It looked fine, he supposed, but leather did not drape the way cloth did.
He straightened up and nodded at the students. "This week, we're not talking about food; we're talking about how other things relate to food." He waved between the two halves of the classroom. "What sorts of food does each of these settings demand? What sorts of conversation and manners? What culture do you expect of each?"
He gestured at the table behind him, which held all the food. "Take some food, and sit where you like to eat it; move between the two, if you like. But think about this - when you choose your food and seat, is it only because of taste? Or is there a reason you prefer one over the other? What behavior do you feel is warranted in each place? What is most appropriate and most comfortable? Let us discuss it."

Listen to the lecture
Grab food, grab a seat, and eat!
Sit and discuss why you chose what you did!
Re: Grab food, grab a seat, and eat!
...but Iggy wasn't here, now, was he? So Prompto was totally grabbing himself a plate of picnic food, plopping down comfortably on one of the blankets and stretching out his legs.
"Totally more my speed, this one," he explained with a grin. "Casual, relaxed. Fresh air makes food taste better! Even if there's more risk of bugs," oh, man, he hoped Dr. Lecter wasn't so detail-orientated to include picnic bugs in the scenario!, "it's totally worth it."
Re: Grab food, grab a seat, and eat!
"So, it's less about the types of food and more about the atmosphere." Ha. "What made you choose the foods you did?"
Re: Grab food, grab a seat, and eat!
"Yeah, I guess so," Prompto allowed, grinning faintly. "I mean, the atmosphere and the food go kind of hand-in-hand, too, though, doesn't it? Like sandwiches and chips are good for this kind of setting; it's be harder to eat, like, maybe soup or something at a picnic. But I mostly just picked, you know, things that looked good, would be easy to eat..."
That didn't look too heavy on the calories...
"You know," he just sort of shrugged, "picnic-y food."

"I'm just more used to this," he admitted, because there were some mealtime conventions at the Vasquez house but nothing formal, and before that?
Nah. He wouldn't know what to do with formal.
