Nina was totally on board with walking through the big, swirly magical portal thing with Lady Teresa, Shin, and Mistress Jeane looking on. Okay, no, she really wasn't, but Lady Teresa watched her with eyes full of faith and that a) made it hard to do anything to let her down and b) distracted Nina from her envy over Mistress Jeane's scantily clad… va-va-voom.

"Keep in touch, Nina," Lady Teresa said as the portal popped into existence in front of them.

Nina hefted her bookbelt and grinned. "I'll be fine, Lady Teresa, I promise!!!!!!! I'll write you right away and tell you all about it!!!!!!"

It was, like, totally super satisfying as some of her classmates got to shove her trunks through the portal before her. But then it meant she had to go through it and--there was no way she was letting Lady Teresa see that she had any qualms at all about this!

"Lord Shin," she said, as she turned to go, "you'd better make sure to look after Lady Teresa!!!! I won't be there to pick up your slack, you know!!!!!"

And then, before he could respond to that, though she heard Lady Teresa laugh, Nina strode through the portal, her back straight, her stride strong, her nerves jangling… and promptly, on the other side, tripped over her trunks.

"Owwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Nina popped up to her feet immediately, despite her aching knees, just in case, like anyone could see her, and stuck her tongue out at the portal, which blipped out of existence, utterly shameless.

It was only once Nina primly sat down on one of her trunks (and did not at all collapse onto it, really) that she took a good look around her.

Glitter, check. Balloons, check. Banner for the school, check…

And literally no one else.

"Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!"

Was she late?!?!?!?!?!?! Was she early?!?!?!?!

"Oh, I sliced into this thing, you better believe I'm going to be the one to drive," Vette said with a playful little grin. "Make yourself comfortable? Anybody who's going to be coming had better get onto this grumbling bucket of bolts!"

She had no idea where they were going.

"Should we, like, see if it actually moves first????? Before everyone gets on????"

Nina clambered into the driver’s seat, squishing over so that there was room for Vette too.

“I think I had a map somewhere,” she said, rifling through her bag. “Unless you know where we’re going??????”

"I have no clue," Vette laughed, bumping shoulders with the other girl quite happily. "You tell me where we're going, and I'll keep us from flying into any walls."

... Yeah, this bus wasn't gonna fly. But that didn't mean Vette wasn't going to drive like it did. But first she had to lean over the controls and squint at them for a minute, trying to figure out what did what. Seemed like pretty standard hovercar controls, but there didn't seem to be an up? Or a down?

Nina’s mouth dropped open even as she kept looking for her map. “Do you, like, think this can fly?!?!?!?! Oh my gosh!!!!! I mean--victory! We have a map!!!!”

It was a little crumpled, since she hadn’t pulled it out of her bag gently but, pfffft, it would still work.

"Let's just try driving around in a circle, first, though!!!!! Then we'll get everyone aboard!!!"

"Okay," Vette said, pretty sure she had this thing all figured out. "And if they don't get on fast enough, they're walking!"

To... whatever that place on the map was.

She shifted around so that she could put her foot on the gas pedal--

-- Which was, of course, about the moment Kanan came back with his coffee to find the bus running and two teenaged butts parked in the driver's seat.

"What the hell? Get away from there!"

Oh! Well! That was certainly no way to speak to them!!!!

"Rude!!!!!!" Nina protested, making no move to, well, move. "We're just making sure we all get to the picnic on time!!!!!!"

They were being helpful, angry man!

"That's my job," Kanan said dryly, stepping up next to the driver's seat and pointing toward the back of the bus. "And that's my seat. So if you would both be so kind as to stop trying to steal the karking shuttle, we can get everyone seated and be on our way."

"We weren't trying to steal!!!!!" Nina protested, sounding genuinely shocked and appalled at the very notion. "We were helping! You weren't here to do your job!!!!!!!"

She raised her chin.

"Come on, Vette, let's sit somewhere else!!!! The company here is terrible!!!!"

"Worst service I've ever had," Vette agreed, sliding out of the driver's seat and then slipping into the bus chair directly behind it.

All the better for heckling.

"And that's really, really saying something."

Oh, Vette was a girl after her own heart!!!!

Nina grinned at the other girl as she took a seat next to her.

"It's shameful!!!! How do we even know he's really going to get us there if he can't even stay with the bus!?!?!? Maybe he's, like, just going to get us late and be fired!!!!!!"

Weren't you glad you'd volunteered for this, Kanan?

He'd never volunteer for anything again, but that was basically half the premise of the class he was teaching with Hera this semester.

"I took a coffee break," Kanan muttered, lifting his key, looking at the dash, and then sighing and ducking under the wheel to survey the damage.

Yup. Gonna have to fix that before returning the bus to Skywalker.

"We'll be on time. I've done this before."

Nina leaned back in her seat, looking unimpressed.

"I don't believe you!!!!!" she declared. "A real driver would have been here!!!!"

"Yeah," Vette agreed easily, if only for the opportunity to stick it to the Man, here. "Driving."

She was absolutely aware they were full of poodoo.

Did she care? Nah. This was too fun.

Nina just hadn't gotten over his total rudeness!!!!!! Whether or not he really was the driver had... zero impact on her reaction, in all honesty.

"And now we're going to be late!!!!!!" Nina pointed out. "Because we're still not moving!!!!! We'd have been long gone by now if Vette and I were driving!!!!!"

Kanan just stared at them both in the reflection in his overhead mirror.

"There are still people who haven't boarded the bus."

He... he wasn't going to leave them behind.

Nina looked back at him, unperturbed.

"Then, like, they should've been on here already?????? Maybe they don't want to come????"

"... They are specifically here to catch the bus," Kanan pointed out, squinting a little.

Why had the Sith given him an easier time than these two?

Because the sithy one was way more serious than they were!!!!

"That might not be true????" Nina said, since Vette certainly hadn't shown up specifically to catch the bus.

"You should go and see????"

She didn't think it would work, but she had to try!!!!!

"Yeah, no."

Sorry, ladies. Not gonna work.

"The bus isn't scheduled to leave here for another three minutes. So why not sit tight until then, and I'll get us to the welcome picnic. On time, even."

"You're so laaaaame," Nina complained. "Vette, you mentioned stories about how terrible of service you've had?????? Like, tell me how they were better than this?????"

"Well, they were on Nar Shaddaa," Vette noted, wrinkling her nose in thought. "So they probably weren't always trying to get someone killed?"

The look on Kanan's face suggested he was not exactly flattered.
