Home Ec- Monday- 2nd period

Brooke looked pretty happy about today's class- and slightly tired, because she'd been up all night reading takes on red carpet fashion, shhh it was her job- because they were starting with something she knew how to do. Again, shhh it was her job.

"Sewing!" she announced, calling everyone to gather around the little table of supplies she had set up. "It's a pretty basic skill that everyone should know how to do because there's really no reason not to. If you lose a button on your shirt, are you going to throw the shirt out? I mean, if you lose the top button it can be a statement, but like, one of the middle ones, it's an easy fix. Or if you rip something on a seam, you can repair it instead of wasting or replacing it. It's really pretty easy," she said, picking up a needle and thread to demonstrate. The loose end goes through the tiny hole in the needle. You can wet the end a tiny bit if you need it to go through more easily. Then you'll tie a knot at the end of the thread, because it you don't, and you put it through fabric and expect it to stay put, then I have no idea why you'd think that. And then you can start, like so."

After showing them how to do that, Brooke said, "You'll try that out today, and then afterwards I want you to test out the sewing machines over there. I've got written instructions by them, and you can practice just learning how to work the machine, because next week I'm going to give you a pattern to work on. Just, uh, don't sew your fingers."

Even though he couldn't help thinking he wasn't likely to use this skill very often (he didn't exactly wear clothes, nor was he a female who might one day need to sew a scale into armor for her lover as the legend went), Sidon couldn't help but be a little fascinated by it. Who knew? Maybe one day, he might get a tear in his very lovely cravat and decide to be frugal and mend it up instead of getting a new one.

Eric had hand-mended more than a few skating costumes over the years (SO. MANY. SEQUINS.), so even though it had been a while since he'd had to, this wasn't a skill he had any trouble remembering how to do.

Sidon had tried. He had really put forth a good old effort. But it seemed that webbed fingers used to holding pointing things much larger than needles were not nearly as adept with tiny things and thin strands of thread as he was hoping. "Oh, bother," he muttered under his breath as he dropped his needle into his lap again, but he picked it up resolutely, looking at it with narrowed eyes as he held it up. "Mark my words, needle, I shall get this stitch and get it well, even if it takes me all class period to do so! I will not be foiled by such a tiny little thing as this, oh no, just you wait!"

And he went to stitch again, only to fumble again, this time with his sharp nails, and he almost nearly let out a bad word, but stopped himself to save his dignity and tried again.

The sewing machine was new, though, so he spent a few minutes going over the different types of stitches mentioned in the instructions before trying them out.

"WHY IS IT GOING SO FAST?!" Paris yelled over the noise.

Probably because you're stomping the pedal, Paris.

"I knew that," Paris said.

She had in no way known that.

Sidon had finally managed to get a button sewed on eventually without excessively dropping the needle, but he thought, after the first one, perhaps the sewing machine might indeed be a better route for him. Once he got the hang of it, it did seem to go much easier, and he held up his stitches quite proudly with a laugh, proclaiming, "No wonder people enjoy clothes so much if this is how they create their garments! Absolutely marvelous! What wonderful technology! Perhaps I should start considering a fetching scarf or a cape every so often!"
