In what ways can the Byzantine Empire be considered a continuation of the Roman Empire? In what ways was it a new political, social, and cultural entity?

Janet had several very good points on this discussion topic. Though she was pretty sure that Tuesday was the ~~easy~~ lecture day normally, wasn't it?

Quinn actually tries.

"Um. They kept some of the old stuff, and turned some of the old stuff into new stuff?" she says. "Like retro, but not."

What factors contributed to the fact that the Byzantine Empire did not suffer the decline in lifestyle quality in the years 500-1000?

Janet brought up several concepts, really she did, but the player was too brain-fried after her dance class to really come up with anything good.

Various Islamic powers had been trying to conquer Constantinople --which is now Istanbul -- since nearly the beginning of the Byzantine Empire. Is it fair to cast the conflict between the two as a conflict between two relatively new religions and/or cultures?

Janet had yet more good points to make on this topic, mostly involving the idea that the religious and cultural conflicts framed an economic conflict. Or something like that.
