Practical Philosophy, Friday
"When we come to this island, we're frequently alone," Ender said. "Some of us can't even return to where we came from, or talk to our family or friends - either because it's physically impossible, or because we don't think we'll be believed."
There had been a risk of thunderstorms today, so Ender had preemptively moved the class inside. To the gym, where they could sit on mats on the floor and retain some of the closed-circle sense behind their outside meetings.
"There's a lot of ways to deal with that," he said. "Maybe you bring something with you you can cling to. Maybe you've got some way of closing yourself off from feelings of loneliness or homesickness. Or maybe you're just glad to be here with us, happy to explore."
He took a sip from his water bottle. "How did you feel when you first got here?" he asked the group. "How do you cope? Do you think there are some coping strategies that are better than others? Do you feel like you belong here, or do you think you ever will?"
Once he finished asking those questions, he threw a quick glance towards a certain member of the group. "Alluka?" he said lightly, "Would you mind sticking behind a little longer after class? I have something to talk to you about."

Listen to the Questions
Talk.
Re: Talk.
"I went up to the roof this week," she said happily. Her stuffed bunny was in her lap, just in case the mat decided to stop being comfy to sit on. "I didn't know I could, but Ringo said it was okay if we were on it, and the ocean from up there is the prettiest!"
Re: Talk.
Re: Talk.
"Just the roof! I'd never seen ledges like they have up there and all the open space with nothing in it. The sky was really close!"
Re: Talk.
Mostly he was glad to hear she was having a good time.

Re: Talk.
Which might possibly be a recipe for disaster.
"And she's going to help me figure out what I'm missing in my closet too. And we're going to throw a party!"

But he doubted that was something he could phrase in a way Alluka would understand. "I'm really happy to hear that," he said. "School is a fantastic place to make friends like that."
Re: Talk.
"It's tons of fun," she agreed, then looked down a little at her bunny.

Talk to the Teacher
Re: Talk to the Teacher
"What does everyone do in here?" she asked curiously, since Andrew was still around.
Well, at least she hadn't left?

Was it fun?

Alluka eyed the panda with avid interest.
"Does that toy talk?"
Re: Talk to the Teacher
It wasn't the most sophisticated droid Ben had ever built, but it could make conversation well enough, at Alluka's maturity level. (And when activated, it would prove to be pretty excitable, even if it could only waggle its arms.)
"I asked my partner to make her," he said, walking back towards Alluka. "Just in case you needed a friend."
Re: Talk to the Teacher
"A friend for me?!"
Re: Talk to the Teacher
He held out the panda.
Re: Talk to the Teacher
"She's really pretty," Alluka said. "Thank you!"

Re: Talk to the Teacher
"Hi," she said, a bit shyly. "I'm Alluka. It's nice to meet you."
Re: Talk to the Teacher
Let's pretend Ender didn't mysteriously turn forty up there...The panda came to life slowly, happily waving her front paws around - the only ones that had servomotors in them. "Hi, Alluka," she said - the voice was a little tinny, but warm. "What are we doing today?"
"She'll learn and pick up a bit of her own personality over time," Ender said.
Re: Talk to the Teacher
"We're going to go exploring today!" she said happily. "And I'll have to show you our room and how everything is and maybe you can even meet my friends."
Re: Talk to the Teacher
... Ender had thought it was best to go with an AI that was about as delighted about everything as Alluka was.
He'd stand aside now and let Alluka have her moment.
