Friday Ethics Class #2, 8-10am
Tara looks excited, as students trickle in, bouncing slightly on the balls of her feet.
"Okay, we've got a lot to get through today. Two announcements to start:
First, Teacher's Assistants have been chosen. I have a carrot - Major K! - and a stick - Angelus. If you're having trouble grasping a concept, talk to Major K!. He'll guide you through the thinking. If you think you've got a hold on it, talk to Angelus. He'll challenge your thinking, give you the opportunity to clarify your position.
Second, and related to the latter - this class is not an easy A. At some point in this course you will find yourself challenged and confronted. For many of you, that will be today. If you walk out of this classroom before class is over, and without checking it with me, I may be understandably upset. However, I recognise that if you get angry or upset, you may need some time alone, or away from the group. To that end, I present to you theEmo Closet Time Out Room." She walks to the back of the classroom and opens the door to what previously was a supply cabinet. Inside is what looks very much like a white padded room. "This room is soundproofed. You can cry, scream and punch things all you want, and I will not penalise you for leaving the class or the discussion. Major K! or I will come to check on anyone who goes to the Emo Closet Time Out Room, in case you need help or support. Feel free to tell us to leave you alone.
Now, we've got our first debate to hear, a discussion topic to... um, discuss, and your first out of class assignment.Which you are going to kill, or at least seriously maim, me for giving you.

Re: Debate
Re: Debate
"Rory Gilmore, Beka Valentine and I will defend why 'Murder is never acceptable, regardless of circumstance'.
Before we start the discussion, we would like to define what we understand under murder. Because we are arguing in a multiverse school, it is important that we do not restrict ourselves to one definition that is bound to one societies rules. That is why we opened up a random dictionary and took the first definition it offered. We came up with the following; murder is the crime of unlawfully killing a person especially with malice aforethought. There has to be an intend to do wrong to the other person
For the second aspect of our argument, we would like to take a closer look at the 'regardless of circumstances'. To explain this further, we argue that murder is wrong on the basis that all sentient beings have a survival instinct and have the desire to live. No one is more equal than another, no matter what species or race you are from. This means that no one is allowed to take a life against the person's will. This isn't something that is restricted to a certain culture, it is a basic part of what it means to be alive.
Our second speaker, Rory Gilmore, will show you in more detail that murder isn't acceptable, and our third speaker, Beka, will summarize our argument and prove to you without a doubt that murder is never acceptable, regardless of circumstance." He quickly looks around and then takes a seat again for the next speaker.

He's dressed in a manner which isn't formal, but which is nicer than his usual class wardrobe
even for a label queen like him. Before taking a seat, he stops by Tara's desk. His attitude towards her is, no you're not hallucinating because of the early hour, deferential.
"Good morning," he deposits a mug in front of Tara. "Peppermint tea, with honey for my Lady."

Re: Discussion topic
"What can I irrevocably call mine?
My body. No one can force me to do anything with my body that I do not allow or choose to do first. Actually, that statement's not true, as I have learned since coming here. Someone can take control of your body. They can make your body do things you hate or hurt those you love." Phoebe swallows and avoids looking at anyone.
"My soul. My soul belongs to me and whatever exists byond death that leads and guides us.
My mind. No one can force me to think in a manner that I do not wish to. I and I alone control my thoughts. They may take over my body but my thoughts and feelings are still my own.
None of these can ever be taken away from me save by death. Even then it would be impossible for someone to take my soul or my mind from me in that case.
I own my soul, but not my heart? It's no longer mine. Someone has been given that part of me to treasure."
Phoebe looks back down to the notes she's been taking.

Re: Discussion topic
"You can claim to own something," he said thoughtfully, "but someone stronger can always take it away. The only things you can truly call yours is what's been given to you that can't be taken away except by your own actions. Things like trust and respect and" -- he glanced at Phoebe -- "someone's heart."
Re: Discussion topic
Re: Discussion topic
"So you don't own anything."
Re: Discussion topic
Re: Discussion topic
Re: Discussion topic
But... whether you should own something just because you can is something else entirely.
Re: Discussion topic
Under the laws of this world, I may own land. That means I can do with that land what I choose. But if I fail to use the land and another uses it, and I do nothing to interrupt their use, in time, they will be given priority over me and come to own the land. Ownership of land requires use of it. There is a legal answer to how far down I own the land, but I don't know it.
I can own the things I purchase or steal, but if someone takes them from me, they belong to the taker. Unless I can challenge their claim with force or law.
I cannot own a pet. I can possess it. I can care for it. But that possession can be stopped by someone else. It can be stopped by the pet if the pet chooses to run away.
It is possible in some worlds," and here she grimaces, bites her lip, and struggles with composure before continuing, "to own a person. Ownership of a person can occur by contract or by indebtedness or force. I cannot own a person because I don't believe in owning free beings.
I do not own my body. It is me. It is not separate from who I am. Silly to speak of owning it. It is mine to do with as I please. Because I control it.
I call nothing mine. Except my friends and loves. They are mine because I protect them and care for them. But they are not owned or possessed. I call them mine because they matter to me. Nothing more. They choose whether to accept that label 'mine' or not."
Assignment briefing
I realise this is a sensitive issue for many of you - and it should be. I would like you to go with your respective TA and get your assignment briefings before you declare that you cannot complete the assignment. You are going to be put into Master/slave pairings. These pairings have been chosen carefully and deliberately, for everyone's education and safety.
The objective of this exercise is to encourage you to break out of previously conceived notions about what being a Master and what being a slave entails. This may feel strange, embarassing, frightening, and even uncomfortable.
Before you begin the exercise, take the time to ask yourself what your true boundaries are. For example: if you prefer to wear the color green and are asked to wear the color blue, you may not be happy about it but, barring an allergic reaction to blue ink, you will not be harmed by trying to wear blue. Blue is therefore not a true boundary for you. Drinking deadly poison, on the other hand, might be. Likewise being made to do something that goes against your religious beliefs would also be a true boundary.
Both masters and slaves should decide on their true boundaries, then discuss a way to ensure that those boundaries are not crossed during the course of this exercise. If you do not wish to tell your partner what the boundaries are, you can instead choose to use what is called a "safe" word. This is a word that means you have been asked to do something that you truly cannot do. Should your partner demand something of you that crosses your boundaries, you can say the safe word to make them stop without having to divulge what the boundary was.
Some form of agreement about boundaries must be reached before you begin the exercise. You do not have to use the safe word option - many don't - but you must use something. Failure to do so will mean failing the exercise. Period.
Rules Everyone Must Follow
1) You must have and keep an agreement with your partner about respecting boundaries (see above)
2) You cannot do anything that will interfere in your partner's classes and school requirements
3) You cannot do anything to physically harm your partner (including, but not limited to, hitting, punching, kicking, etc.)
4) You cannot do anything to psychologically harm your partner (including, but not limited to, insulting, belittling, publically humiliating, etc.)
5) All school rules must be obeyed at all times (did this one really need to be repeated for you?)
6) You cannot be made to do anything that you find morally objectionable, puts yourself in danger, puts others in danger, harms property, and/or creates an unsafe environment
7) During the course of the exercise you must wear a tag that labels you as an Ethics class Master/Slave
Violation of these rules equals instant failure.
Tara hands out everyone a copy of these rules for their own reference.

Assignment part 2: Hierarchy
In addition to the Master/slave pairings all students in the class are considered subordinate to the TAs, who are themselves subordinate to myself. We have only two orders:
1) Address us respectfully. Angelus will be henceforth referred to as 'Daddy', Major K! will be henceforth referred to as 'Rabbit', and if you have need to talk to me, you may address me as 'My Lady'.
2) Call any of us immediately to report if your partner has violated the rules of this assignment. All three of us will have our cell phones on and with them for the duration of the assignment. If you feel things have gone or are going too far, call at once and we will help you.
[ooc: which means you may ping me either on AIM or MSN as 'Shaalwyd' to get my attention. All three of us have our voicemail in our user profiles.]

Assignment: What you are expected to accomplish
At the end of the assignment, you will be expected to answer the following questions:
1) What did it feel like being in your role? If you were a Master, did you like giving orders and being responsible for another student's life? If you were a slave, did you resent being made to serve or did you find it wasn't so bad?
2) Masters: would you keep your slaves or replace them? Slaves: would you stay with your Master or try to run away?
3) Before the assignment, what were your views on ownership and slavery? Did the assignment change those views?
4) Masters: do you think you were given this role because it was believed you would provide a level of understanding and respect to the one serving you? Slaves: do you think you were given this role because it was believed you needed to learn how to be taken care of?
5) Report on your partner (this will be kept in confidence). Did they treat you respectfully? Did they do the assignment in the spirit it was intended or did they hold you back by not participating fully? This is also a good time to mention anything that happened which did not feel like a direct violation of your agreement, but which you weren't wholly happy about.
