Hubris from Revelation: the Social Engineering of Ultimate Truths [Monday, Period 2]

As the students arrived at the Danger Shop as handwavily instructed, they would find a feast set up. Long tables surrounded by large pillows and low couches, piled with heaps of food. "Last week we spoke briefly on Islam, so today I feel free to bump polytheism in favor of celebration," Ghanima said cheerfully, waving for them to take a seat. "Today is Eid ul-Fitr, often abbreviated to Eid."

"Eid is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity", while Fiášr means "to break fast"; and so the holiday symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period. It is celebrated after the end of the Islamic month of Ramadan, on the first day of Shawwal."

"Muslims believe that during the month of Ramadan, Allah revealed the first verses of the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam. Around 610 A.D., a caravan trader named Muhammad took to wandering the desert near Mecca while thinking about his faith. One night a voice called to him from the night sky. It was the angel Gabriel, who told Muhammad he had been chosen to receive the word of Allah. In the days that followed, Muhammad found himself speaking the verses that would be transcribed as the Qur'an. At many mosques during Ramadan, about one thirtieth of the Qur'an is recited each night in prayers known as tarawih. In this way, by the end of the month the complete scripture will have been recited."

"While celebrations vary worldwide, there are some common themes to the day. Typically, Muslims wake up early in the morning and have a small breakfast -- as a sign of not being on a fast anymore -- before attending a special Eid prayer, or salah, that is performed in congregation at mosques or open areas like fields, squares etc. Many wear new clothes for the occasion if possible, otherwise it is expected to dress in your best. The Eid prayer is followed by the khutbah -- sermon -- and then a supplication asking for forgiveness, mercy and help for all living beings across the world. The khutbah also instructs Muslims as to the performance of rituals of Eid, such as the zakat. It is then customary to embrace the persons sitting on either side of oneself, whilst greeting them. After the prayers, people also visit their relatives, friends and acquaintances, and some people also pay visits to the graveyards."

"Before the Eid prayer begins, every Muslim who is able must pay Zakat al-fitr, an alms for the month of Ramadan. This equates to about 2 kilograms of a basic foodstuff such as wheat, barley, dates, or raisins, or its cash equivalent, and is typically collected at the mosque. This is distributed to needy local residents prior to the start of the Eid prayer. It can be given at any time during the month of Ramadan and is often given early, so the recipient can use it for Eid purchases. This is distinct from Zakat based on wealth, which must be paid to a worthy charity."

"So embrace your neighbor, have some lamb, and pass the vegetables," Ghanima said, gesturing at the table. "Your assignment for today is to go out and pay Zakat al-fitr as best you can after class. Give a friend a cookie, make pancakes in the common room, break the fast, and spread joy and goodwill to all. There's some handouts by the door if you're interested in learning more, but for now, eat."

While Jono found the lecture to be absolutely enthralling, he thought the surroundings were... Less.

He kept his head down during the lecture, and distanced himself from the tables of food as much as possible, today.

Fiona listened, curious about the religion as she was about most things she knew absolutely nothing about, and took notes.

Jonas...had never attended a class where the sole responsibility was to eat. He'd always had to learn something, listen to something, write something so he felt almost out of place with this class.

Oh, as far as Kate was concerned, Ghanima was some sort of a saint today. This was a direct result of having missed breakfast, again.

The food was a massive distraction, but Kate did her best to listen to the lecture.

Wow. It was like the universe was conspiring to make sure Tahiri ate decent meals lately.

She wasn't complaining, though; it smelled good. Despite that distraction, she managed to pay attention and take plenty of notes on the lecture. For one of the religions that, according to last week's lecture, had demonstrated some fairly extreme tendencies, this was a completely different aspect.

For reasons only a couple of people in this class might be able to guess at, that was a realization that had Tahiri sporting a somewhat relieved, surprised, and very thoughtful smile.

The Muslim religion was one of the ones Sam knew the least about, so he was listening with rapt attention, hoping that he didn't butcher the words too badly in his notes.

The food smelled amazing, and nearly distracted her from the lecture.

Until Ghanima mentioned distributing food to the needy.

This was a good time to send home an oversized care package, to Edge. Not the booze-and-porno variety, either.

The food kept distracting Jill, but she made sure to take good notes. Yummy food could come later.

Jono figured he had two options, today. Either sit at the table and not eat and feel sorry for himself and drag everyone down with him, or else edge his way toward the door.

... He was something of a professional, when it came to feeling sorry for himself. He grabbed a glass of water, something to idly dabble his fingers in so that he wasn't just a lump in the corner somewhere, and he continued to keep his head down as the other students sat, ate, and made merry.

Jonas had very little idea what most of these things were. He recognized some breads and fruits but the rest remained foreign. Deciding to play it safe, he picked up small helpings of things he did recognize and spaced them out on a plate.

Maybe he'd get more daring later but, for now, he wasn't daring at all.

Jack filled his plate with bread, vegetables and some lamb, then glanced around the group. He wasn't especially familiar with Zakat al-fitr, but it was a concept he could support.

Tahiri helped herself to a little bit of everything (a lot of the kabobs, though, since they looked really good) and got comfortable at the table.

She could probably talk at length about several holidays but handwavily because wow, way to not be exhaustively informative about something for once, canon if she wasn't busy eating at the time.

Look, she was eating, okay?

Helen enjoyed the foods very much. And she thought quite a bit about Zakat al-fitr. It seemed like a very nice concept.

Elena was especially thoughtful as she took food onto her plate. It seemed wrong to be enjoying a feast, when some were starving, back home.

Care package. Industrial-sized. It wasn't like they didn't owe it to the populace, all things considered.
