Child Development- 1st Period- Class #5

The class was in the Danger Shop again, though the cribs were gone. Today the room looked very much like an indoor play area full of toys and games.

For a long moment after the bell rang, Lily just stared at the class.

Then she let out a heavy sigh and said, "I had to have a class where I have to talk today, didn't I? Okay, look, if you're in the same boat I am, you just want to do what you need to do and get out before telling the cute guy you've been staring at you like him or something, or whatever kids do these days when they're supposed to be listening to the lectures. So. We are covering ages two and three today. You know this as the terrible twos. Kids are running, jumping, climbing trees, and yelling 'no' at you a lot. They're a lot like teenagers that way.

"You have handouts, look at them instead of listening," she said, passing them out. She was also talking really quickly, like it was the speed of her speech and not so much what she said that might stop her from yelling something like "SOCK" out in the middle of class. "You're going to have fake toddlers in class today. You each get one, and you get to take care of him or her for the class period. Good luck with that, I made them especially annoying."

She covered her mouth with her hand and said, "And don't forget to clean up after them before you go."

Toddlers!

"At least they're fake! Ah-hah!"

Angela hadn't really noticed anything wrong today, but she also hadn't really talked to anyone either.

She just sat back and watched Lily with a little bemusement as she sped through the lecture.

Peyton was pretty sure Dean already knew she stared at him, so she wasn't too worried about that.

John was just not going to engage anyone in discussion today as that didn't seem to be the greatest of ideas. He kept his head down and his eyes on the handout.

Toddlers.

Great.

Claire was less than enthused.

Chad looked over the hand-outs, and couldn't help at least one grunt, which he probably wouldn't have normally added words, too, but he felt like saying them anyway, "Toddles are awesome."

They told the best stories. Who cares if they never made any sense?

At least Claudia had dressed vaguely appropriately for class today in an old painter's jumpsuit liberally splashed with color from when she'd painted her and Zayne's room, a pair of bright pink Chuck Taylors, and a belt woven out of pieces of baby blankets. Her hair was back in two buns on the sides of her head and she was wearing enormous silver hoop earrings. On anyone else it would look nuts. On Claudia, it looked great.

"It is waaaaaay too early to deal with toddlers," she complained.

Emmett had no idea what was going on.

So it was a normal day for Emmett.

This particular little girl seemed to have been programmed not to need to rest. Ever.

Angela was trying to calm her down to absolutely no effect, and was getting dragged around in the process. If anyone wanted to pair up to take this on, no doubt she'd be thrilled.

Prince Edward stared down at the little boy who was clinging to his boot. This made it very difficult to walk around so Edward planted his feet and wouldn't budge.

The child screamed over and over again, 'more!'. If Edward knew what he wanted more of, he'd certainly give it to him.

"Cease, child! You are breaking my ears!"

Claire thought her kid was adorable right up until she caught a whiff of his diaper. "It's time to change you, uh, Aiden," she said, because as far as she could tell they were all named either Aiden or Emma.

Aiden shrieked "NO!" and ran over to the top of the slide. He wasn't coming down.

Claire spent a few minutes begging him to jump into her arms before she remembered she'd have to deal with poop if he did and decided to just let him play. It wasn't like his virtual diaper rash was her problem.

Chad's child seemed entirely intent on using Chad as nothing more than a big giant jungle gym.

And Chad was happy to oblige, making sure he was as close to the floor as he could get, though. He didn't need the little tyke falling and hurting himself. The only bad part of it came when the little boy started pulling his hair, and only laughed and pulled harder when Chad tried to be nice and tell him that it hurt and he should stop. Of course, he didn't. And Chad took it. He was used to that after several rounds of fake kids of his own.

Claudia, after convincing her charge that pulling on her earrings, and then her hair, wasn't a good idea, had settled down in a corner with fingerpaints and a piece of paper that wasn't nearly big enough for the kid's artistic vision.

Claudia's outfit was going to be even more paint-covered by the end of class.

"Hey, honey," Francine, said to her little girl, who had frizzy blonde hair falling all over her face, and suspiciously sticky fingers. "I'm Francine. What's your name?"

"Poooooooooooooooo!" the little girl yelled happily, jumping up and down.

"...Your name is Poo? Your fake parents must be really mean," Francine replied, then clapped a hand over her mouth. "I mean... that's a really unusual name."

"Noooo! Pooooooooooooooo!" the girl shouted again, cackling. Then she proceeded to start writing on the wall with her suspiciously sticky fingers.

Francine eyed the artwork, trying to control whatever was happening to her mouth so she didn't say anything to make the little girl burst into tears. "That's very..." Round? Bumpy? Impossible to identify? "What is that a picture of?" she went with, leaning over to point. "Can you tell me what that is?"

The little girl held up her suspiciously sticky fingers high above her head as if doing the Wave. "Pooooooooooooooooooooooo!" she crowed.

"Oh good lord." Francine reached for a tiny wrist. "Can I see your hands, please? I think we need to wash them."

"Noooooo! Poooooooooooo!" Giggling maniacally, the wee girl swiped her hands across Francine's horrified face, then scrambled away.

Against anything resembling better judgement, Francine took a deep breath... and then licked the chocolate off her nose. She sighed and reached for a Wet-Nap -- make that two.

"C'mon, honey, come down from there," K-Mart pleaded, trying to figure out how the hell her kid had gotten up on a bookcase. She held her arms our. "C'mon, it's not safe for you up there. Come down and I'll tell you stories about Auntie Claire."

Good God she missed the little ones in the convoy right about now.

Bender was looking through the toys, looking for anything small enough not to be missed. He had a small drum in one hand when one side off it tilted downwards and grubby fist - complete with attached toddler, squeaking, "Mine!"

"I found it first," Bender told it.

"My turn," the kid jumped up, grabbing at the drum with its other hand. "Mine, mine, mine."

"Found it, keeping it," said Bender, lifting up the drum. "Now get those paws off the merchandise."

The toddler kicked its legs. The floor had gone. Increasing in volume, "Mine, mine, mine," started to be interrupted by hiccupy breaths, as the child fell a few inches, padded bottom connecting with the floor. It started wailing.

"Heh," said Bender, smug in victory.

A few minutes later. "Just put a sock in it, kid!"

Prince Edward was helpful.
