Criminal Justice, Friday, Period 1
"Today we're going to take a brief look at lawyers," Batman said right at the top of class. "I won't stereotype them. Some are greedy. Some are immoral. Some do good work for free. Some do good work for a lot of money. Not all of them lie whenever their lips are moving, as the joke goes. But any lawyer you find should be able to present a compelling argument based on truth or whatever they can come up with to support the evidence they have."
"In order to become a real lawyer, you first have to go through law school and eventually pass the bar examination, a standardized test that serves as your final hurdle before you can officially be a lawyer. Once you're legal, ou can branch off."
Batman spent a few minutes explaining the different kinds of lawyers. Criminal, patent, environmental, maritime, public defenders.... He even clarified his 'real' lawyer comment by explaining that you could be your own lawyer. He wrapped that explanation up with, "Don't do that. You're almost certainly less qualified than anyone else who could possibly work your case."
"But the last kind of lawyer I want to discuss today is also the kind of lawyer we'll be talking about most in this class: district attorneys," Batman stated. "These are the public employees who try to prove guilt in criminal cases. In many ways, their job is the hardest among any lawyer because not only is the burden of proof always on them - meaning that they have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant committed a crime, while a defense attorney just has to raise enough doubt to win - but they're also directly and publicly working against criminals. In my world, that's reason enough to receive acid to the face."
Batman spent some time elaborating on the role of the DA and their assistant DAs before wrapping things up.
"The lecture doesn't leave any time for an activity today. We will make up for that next week. Dress for an active class."
